Best Margaritas in Portland 12/2/2009

Romo's has hands-down the best margaritas in Portland. I live in the area so when Romo's moved to SE Stark I was thrilled! It is not your typical Mexican restaurant; the decor is classy and warm, the bar is beautiful and the food has a Southwestern twist. If you live downtown it is definitely worth the drive over to the East side. Pros: Food is amazing Cons: Parking more

Glad I found this place 10/15/2009

Randomly found this place because we were in the mood for mexican food. It is a New Mexico- Arizona style cuisine. Everything was very good. I had the fish tacos which was a choice between mahi mahi or tillapia. The mahi mahi tasted fresh and the salsas and sides were just right. The salsa was nice because it had anaheim chilis roasted in it. The margarita tasted very good. The mix seemed to taste fresher and more citrus than I get at a typical mexican restaurant. Pros: Good margaritas, fresh food more

My new favorite restaurant!! 5/15/2009

I was soooo hungry the other day so I went to a little place called Romo's on Stark. It looked like a tavern from the outside but when I went inside it was a beautiful restaurant. I was able to take advantage of happy hour and ordered an enchilada plate for 4 dollars (which was actually too much food for me to eat.) The server was ableto answer every question I had about the food and I am just delighted to have found my new favorite restaurant!! more

Love it!!! 2/26/2009

I have been eating at Romo's for years! I can't imagine going anywhere else. The waitresses are always welcoming, especially Maggie. Romo, the owner, is great. However, I don't only go in for the people, I more importantly go in for the food. The guacamole is amazing, try them with the fresh flour tortilla chips, there is nothing better. If you like margaritas they are great and strong. I prefer a mojito which they do a pretty good job at also. For dinner there are so many wonderful choices; fish tacos, prawns, fajitas, and a good old combination meal where you get what you want. My friends, family and coworkers have been in with me and love Romo's just as much as I do! Can't wait to go again. Pros: Service and food!!! Cons: parking sometimes is hard to find more

Great Mexican Food! 2/24/2009

My wife and I really love going to Romo's Latin Quarter for dinner. I have been going there for probably 10 years since the last location on Hawthorne. The new space on Stark is a much nicer property and they have done a great job of decorating and keeping it lively with good music and food. Pros: Great food! Cons: Could use louder music more

Response from Romo 2/22/2009

\r We apologize for your uhhappy ""happy hour"". We have just started this part of our day and obviously had not perfected it back in January. We now have a solid bar and drink menu. The food is the same, always delicious and plentiful. In response to other reviews about high prices, we, like other restaurants have lowered our prices taking into consideration the state of the economy. Regarding the complaint about paying for our freshly made chips, the first bowl was free and we were charging for extra orders. This has changed. We no longer charge for chips at all. We are also kid friendly and offer a kid's menu. Now about that complaint about a dirty glass. We apologize for that as well. When that occured the waitress also apologized, tried to comp the customer's meal but the party was so angry that no apology would do. I visit many restaurants and have periodicially received dirty silver ware, glass ware or a plate. This does not happen often but when it does, I inform the wait staff and they always give me a new, clean item. This kind of thing happens although we tall ry to prevent it. I hope this satisfies some of the concerns raised about Romo's. We hope to see you again sometime. Also, Maggie is back! She works on Friday nights. more

Best Mexican! 2/10/2009

Romo's is my favorite Mexican in Portland. The chips are cooked fresh so when they come out they are still warm, thin and crispy too. I always get the guacamole appetizer which is so much better than most restaurant's guacamole. Its chunky...not pureed to a pulp. The shredded beef is amazing and the taco grande is pefection. You must try the Brownie dessert if they have it- to die for! Pros: amazing food, great ,margaritas more

Happy Hour not so Happy 1/30/2009

I've been enjoying Romo's restaurants for many years now, last week I decided to check out the new happy hour as reccomended by the servers. I was surprised to find an unfamiliar face up front that was unable to serve me alchohol; and with all due respect it was very difficult to comprehend the thick accent of the new server. \r As always the food was amazing and I can only hope that the service situation was due to inadequate staffing. My happy hour would have been happier with the cocktail I ordered. more

Really good mexican, hard to find in this city anymore. Romo's has it! 1/18/2009

As a former customer of Romo's Lajara, it has taken me this long to go out to 79th and Stark (from NE pdx) to have me some Romo's. The trip was worth it! I must mention the reviewer before me must be crazy or something has changed since, as my husband and I had 2 bowls of their awesome chips and salsa and paid nothing for it. The margaritas are delicious and the food is exceptional. I always get the red chile beef and it is just as good as I remember it being. The prices are reasonable, especially since many mexican places are starting to charge very high prices. Not so here, the prices are quite reasonable and the food is a great value for the money. The open looking kitchen is a nice touch. The only thing is most of the places in that area have the same sort of entrance, where you walk in the door and find yourself in the middle of the dining room. Other than that, a great experience and will return even if it is across town for me. Pros: Great value and even better food. Cons: Too far away from home. more

Great Food Left a Bitter Taste after Shady Business Practice 9/30/2008

Yep, the food was great. But when that bill came and we discovered we?d been being charged for something we were led to believe was free, we were left with a bitter taste for this new business in our sweet little neighborhood of Montavilla. Shame on them. Pros: Food was scrumptious. Cons: oh so many... read my review. more

Been eating Romos for 20 years 9/30/2008

My wife and I have been eating here for 20 years and have never been dissapointed. Margaritas are ALWAYS great, best salsa, dishes you won't find anywhere else. Might be hard to find a parking spot, but I would walk a mile for Romo's food. Sure they may be short staff once in a while but isn't everybody? more

Not bad.... 8/23/2008

Nice place, good service, decent ""ambiance"". Above average margarita & excellent ceviche - by the time I got to my main course (fajitas), I was feeling good and liking everything. Solid joint. Pros: margaritas & service Cons: none comes to mind more

One of Our Standards 7/1/2008

My husband & I recently relocated to PDX and were looking for a good Mexican-style restaurant (though Romo will inform you that this is Latin). We like the food so much that we return about every other week - everything is unbelievably fresh (especially that divine guacamole) and Romo is a hoot - a lot like some of the proprietors we knew back in NYC. Granted, the prices aren't your rock-bottom taco truck, but the quantities are huge, the wine list is good and we always enjoy our meal (mine usually being the mahi mahi soft-wrapped tacos with that gorgeous mango salsa). Keep up the good work Romo! Pros: Really yummy food more

very dissapointed 6/29/2008

(MY COMMENTS) hard to find parking ,My son finished his glass of water only to find the glass was dirty,.Inside looked as it had soap residue and dry food, the dishwasher must not have been working on that day. That was enough for me to think about leaving ,when the drinks arrived to the table and it was time to order the food my soda was forgotten I got up and waited in the car, I had time to changed my mind about eating there.(wifes comments) My son only ate half of his burrito. There was no apology for the dirty glass. My mother-in-law asked for more chips and was charged for it. The food was bland, the waitress only came back to the table to bring the food and the bill after the order was taken.I wish that we all had left when my husband had the insite to leave.will not eat there again the prices are high for this kind of service. Cons: poor service, dirty glass ware more

It is what it is...and it's great 6/25/2008

I have enjoyed reading these reviews, and can't help but chime in. We've been eating at Romo's for over a decade, and it's consistently excellent. Raves about the green chili sauce are deserved; their homemade guac is perfect; I have never had a ""watered down"" drink, and I've had gallons of those delicious margs over the years. No, it's not cheap, but it's worth money, which often isn't true of cheap Mexican food. If the owner was curt, then yes, you met Romo---he's direct and he's genuine. (Uncommon virtues despite brusque side effects.) This is great food, and worth the visit. Pros: The food! Cons: Eventually, the plate is empty. more

Great food and Mojitos.... Sangria too!!! 6/16/2008

Romo is a good guy he just trys a little too hard... yeah he shows your food to other tables.. and sits and chitchats with you, but really he just wants you to experence His restruant... its his last one let him have it... the food is really good the drinks are wonderful!!! the help is totally cute Katie, Laura, Mariebelle, Candice!!! Pros: The Food and Drink and Service Cons: Romo is there alot more

Authentic Mexican Food (or as close as you'll get in Portland) 6/16/2008

I just moved here from New Mexico and I've been craving green chile ever since I got here. I read a review about another couple who moved here from New Mexico who loved the food. I must say, it's the best Mexican food you're gonna get in Portland. The green chile actually has a bit of a kick to it (although it's not as hot as I'm used to). The reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because the customer service wasn't very good (we had to ask every time we wanted a refill of water and chips and salsa). The good news is they have take out so you don't even have to mess with the customer service! I will definately be going back. more

Awesome Sauces 6/8/2008

Mouthwatering sauces seem to be the specialty here. This is the best tasting mexican food you can get without traveling to mexico. The only down side is this NOT A YOUNGER KID FRIENDLY RESTAURANT, they do not have any booster seats or high chairs. more

Horrible service!!! Mediocre food!!! 6/5/2008

This was the worst experience I have had in a long time. We had reservations for a party of 6. Within 5 minutes of us being there, we knew 1/2 of party was not going to show and we were about to tell our server to take the extra table away, but instead the owner came over to our table and said, ""if our other party doesn't show he has to take the table for paying customers""!, it came across very rude-(WE GAVE the empty table up for another party)Now for our server. She never brought us chips and salsa, we had to ask if that was complimentary even though all the tables around us were getting chips and salsa-We specifically went there for Sopapillas and the owner said he didn't feel like making them that night because he hasn't perfected them. We were still ok, since another server started to finally wait on us and take our order. Now the food was ok, nothing special. The topper of the evening was when we got our check and they had added 18% gratuity, which clearly states on the check for a party of 5 or more. We had been a party of 3 all night, gave up our end table for paying customers and had TERRIBLE Service. so we paid the 18% and I hope this restaurant goes out of business, but thankfully our server got an extra $3.00 out of the deal! more
