Fantastic staff, quirky decor, A++ Bloody Mary! 10/13/2008

Two brunches and counting! One as a couple, one in a group, one inside, one outside, all awesome. This was one of those ""we always wanted to check it out"" places, and on a random rainy Sunday afternoon we finally stepped inside. Sipped perfectly peppered bloodies (under the virgin mary), and enjoyed giant french toast with fresh blueberries. For the second brunch we sat in the spacious, deliciously eclectic back patio. Staff was fun and friendly, extremely attentive, and beyond patient when one of our party was over an hour late, and we waited to order. Kept the drinkies and the smiles coming, and we'll keep going back for more. Can't wait to try it for dinner or a private party! Have a new rez crush. Pros: Excellent staff, funky decor, overall great atmoshpere Cons: Maybe a little quiet sometimes, if you need a crowd. more

One of the best restaurants in the neighborhood 5/16/2008

I took an out of town guest here for dinner last night and we loved our experience at Robin des Bois. Everyone who worked there was friendly and professional. Attentive but not overbearing and they did not rush us at all even though we had one of the coveted patio tables. Speaking of the patio, it is one of the loveliest spots I have had dinner in a long time. We started our dinner with cocktails, my friend had the beet salad and I had the gazpacho. For our main course she had the salmon and I had the goat cheese & tomato sandwich. We also had some wasabi mashed potatoes which were out of this world (and one of the specials that night)! For dessert we shared the warm chocolate cake which was delicious and very rich- you could taste the cocoa. Pros: Beautiful patio, incredible food Cons: cash only more

Fun, great atmosphere, and fantastic food 4/21/2008

I've been going to - and loving - Robin de Bois for years now. This weekend I had a revelation: the food is actually getting better. I found this unusual - most places that have been around for awhile and have a dedicated following become apathetic, and the quality of the food declines. Not here - just the opposite in fact. I had the sea bass special, with mashed potatoes, after starting with the tuna tartare and the wild mushroom salad. It is particularly amazing when you see the size of the kitchen (tiny!). The decor is fun, the wine is great, the food is fantastic, and the prices are reasonable. I'm so excited that the nice weather is here too to be able to sit outside in their beautiful garden. more

So disappointing! 5/29/2007

My beet and goat cheese salad had three tiny, lousy crumbles of cheese, the steak sandwich should really be called bread and mayo sandwich since it was this gigantic piece of baguette covered in spicy mayo accented with about 8-12 tiny, tiny slices of skirt steak. And the waitress seemed like she'd rather be swimming in the depths of hell than waiting on us. It made for a really uncomfortable dining experience. I can't believe so many people rave about this place! Bad day maybe? Pros: Nice decor Cons: Service more

Would Recomment if... 4/19/2007

I ate here in the winter w/my cousin. Food was good. Seating is a problem. The place is small and seating is wherever they can put a table. Even if it's right in the walkway to the bathroom/bar. It's electically decorated and very dim inside. Pros: Good Food Cons: Uncomfortable Seating more

Lively, crowded and delicious! 4/9/2007

Oh, you folks! When will you learn? Haven't ANYof you worked in a popular restaurant? These places get crowded 'cause they have something to offer- the wait has everything to do with a commitment to their menu(and not to mention, lots of other customers...). It's not all about you, really! We went for the first time Saturday, and yes it was insane. They still managed to serve us great food quickly. They even smiled. But they didn't have time coddle us - they were swamped! They were not aloof, just efficient. Our entire meal was delicious- the wine affordable, the atmosphere a myriad of dark delights. Pros: Ambience, Beets and Goat Cheese more

Seafood Stew! 3/25/2007

Stumbled upon this restaurant from a trip to Brooklyn. Food was delicious! Everything was very fresh and tasty and came in good portions. Prices are reasonable. We ordered the pork chop and it was really tasty and not dry eventhough we asked for it to be completely well done. Everything in the seafood stew was fresh--not like some restaurants where the mussels are dry and old. It was still good the second day and I ate to the bottom of the dish including sauce. Will definitely go back. Pros: Food, reasonable prices Cons: a little cramped more

Best atmosphere, food, decor on Smith St. 8/20/2006

I love this place-the food is always well presented and prepared. Good size portions and an affordable menu. I find myself craving the mussels and running on over at least twice a month. The service is so attentive-I am not sure why others had a bad experience? We had dinner there Saturday, and each server came over to check on us- they have good synergy. The citysearch photo does no justice to the interior or decor-I highly suggest checkng this place out-large mirrors, antique chandeliers, with a 60's mod, french, and somewhat sensual charm. Pros: Great food, atmosphere, decor more

Smith Street - Friday Night 3/25/2006

I've been here dozens of times. The first thing you notice when you walk in is the aroma of roasted chicken. Then you realize there is an alligator skin over your head. Toni loves the monk fish. I like anything duck. The food reminded me of my brother-in-law's cooking. So I brought him there.... Sure enough, he and the proprieter came from the same town - Aix. Great french country cooking! The only thing that I don't like about this restaurant is the dishwasher etched glasses. Pros: aroma, price, servings Cons: steak tartare more

nice to return 11/29/2005

...to this place after having lived abroad for a year. It was a quiet night maybe because of the holidays. The atmosphere was the same as before--sorta trendy, but homey and casual at the same time. The food was actually better than I remembered. In terms of quality/price, this is one of my favorite hang out in Brooklyn. more

Charming 10/8/2005

I came here for Sunday brunch. The garden out back is enchanting. Unfortunately we didn't eat out there because it was too cold. The food was well priced and service was good. I'll definitely be back. Pros: Quirky decour, reasonably priced more

elitist poseurs sign here. 9/30/2005

this could not have been worse. i have gone here for years, adn have always accepted the below average service with a nod to the fact that you are left alone. Until tonight, when we were served juice for $12 trying to pass as a martini. After the point of (gasp) asking the bartender to add something other than juice (but with none of that sarcasm), we were treated with eye rolls and attitude. This bar wants nothing but european customers or brooklynites pretending to be such. Pros: close to home., that's all. Cons: attitude, weak drinks more

Love the place, but... 6/8/2005

I've been here quite a few times for brunch and dinner. I love the decor, garden, the food, etc. but oh my god, the service is DREADFUL. It never fails, I go in and they have someone even more airheaded and slower than the last time. I'm sure not everyone on their staff is bad, but I've been going there for a couple of years and I always get someone appalling. It's a shame really. Also, there's usually quite a wait to get your food. Pros: Decor, Garden, Food Cons: Service , Service, Service more

Poor service and food, decent backyard area 5/26/2005

I have been to this place since the beginning and went again recently, it's still the same. The food is mediocre. The drinks are not very good. Friends had g&ts which were pretty much tonic and ice. When asked for more gin it came back with way too much gin and they charged for the extra gin shot. The service not that helpful and oddly strict also with where we could sit. There were 4 chairs free in the smoking section (a small raised platform in the back of the yard), we were 4 but they said they didn't want to seat us there --no explaination. I had a richard (anise) with grenadine which was fine. The food was subpar each time i went. There are plenty of other places to go on smith with better food and garden. The space is great, just not how it's run... a shame Pros: outdoor garden Cons: food, service more

not the place for hungry people 12/6/2004

the food is good enough... but not enough to wait an eternity for. its a good place to go if you think you may be hungry in about 2 hours. Pros: good food Cons: , waiting forever!! more

Unpretentious French Fare at Last 11/6/2003

The French invasion on Brooklyn has brought tons of 'poseur' restaurants, pretending to be oh so French. They lack imagination and provide a sterile atmosphere seemingly designed by someone who has only read about France and never actually visited. Sherwood is creative, funky and has a unique personality that provides a welcome change to the other cliche French boites. The service is slow at times, but that is part of the charm. You go to Sherwood to hang out, soak in the kitschy atmosphere and relax. The food -- which is unprententious, well-prepared and tasty -- is just part of the overall Sherwood experience. The oysters are a nice new addition and the drinks are oh so French in a great way. This place is fun! Pros: Great atmosphere, Unpretentious cuisine, Wonderful Hang out Cons: Reserved waitstaff, Slow service more

Foresty respite in big city 9/24/2002

I've been to this restaurant several times. The food is quite delicious and the atmosphere like none other - interestingly eclectic with a garden straight out of some French country-side. The menu is not as extensive as other restaurants, but they offer a variety of tasty and satisfying food for all. You'll want to soak up every drop of the sauces with their yummy bread. On my last visit I had the poached salmon and couldn't get enough of it, it was so good. The only thing that really suffered at this place is the service. They are friendly, but on the forgetful side. Overall, it's a refreshing alternative to the mostly new restaurant-bars on Smith Street. more

Good food but sub par service 6/29/2002

The food was good, unfortunately the service was non-existent. To an appaling point.... Pros: Food Cons: Service more
