Absolutely never use this place!!!! 3/6/2010

Oh, where to begin. I agree, Author is a cheery guy who loves what he does. He is very proud of the fact that he speaks 6 languages and has had Governor Rendell as a customer. He is great when you have no problems with the work he has done. But if some thing goes wrong, its gets ugly. A friend of mine bought a suit jacket and a matching pair of pants a while back and we brought them to Author to get them pressed. When we got the items back, the pants were ruined. They very clearly had burn marks of an iron in several places on them. When I confronted him with this, he denied his place had done this. He said that the fabric was defective, that's why this had happened. He then proceeded to ball up the $5 bill that we paid for the cleaning service and THREW it back at me. Then he ordered me to leave his store and never come back. We approached him twice and asked him to pay for the damaged items and he said he would not. He proceed to say we were harassing him and threatened to call the cops on us. (Each time we brought a witness just in case things got ugly). I had enough of this. I was unemployed, so I had some free time to take this to the next level. We took him to small claims court for the cost of the damaged items. Well, we won the case. (It's public record - Claim # SC-09-09-10-4156 in the Philadelphia Municipal Court) We approached him in his store reiterating that he had lost the court case and owed us money. He denied it and said we were harassing him and he was going to call the cops on us. The sheriff's office cant officially collect the actual money you win in a court case. If you pay them a fee they will go out to his place of business and take inventory of things and put a levy on everything on the property. One more filing at the sheriff's office and the property that has been levied goes up for sale in a public sheriff's auction. This auction would go on until his debt to us was paid off. I guess the sheriff's sale letter made it to his personal residence because we all of a sudden started getting calls from his wife and lawyer offering to pay the debt before it got to the actual sheriff sale. Well, when their check cleared, we filed the appropriate paperwork to call off the sale. I will say that all of this was time consuming and I would have only taken this on because I was unemployed. The process is not fun, but he damaged our clothes. No one should just be able to destroy someone property and not have to take responsibility for it. That is why I took it this far. So take a guess on how I feel about his business and if I would recommend him to anyone? Cons: EVERYTHING!!! more

Seems nice at first, until he does something wrong 8/15/2009

Arthur seemed really nice and friendly at first when I dropped my clothes off the first few times. We chatted in one of the six languages he is proudly fluent in and I was pleased with the service even if the costs were a bit high. Then something happened. I took him three pairs of pants to get hemmed ASAP. He proudly predicts my inseam measurement without even measuring (we do measure to double check) and proclaims they'll be done in less than 24 hours. I was happy to get them the next day cause I was in a hurry, but when I got them home, all three pairs were an inch short. I went back and he blames me for telling him the wrong inseam. WTF? We were both there when it was measured! After his aggressive attitude, I dropped it and vowed never to go back. I figured nothing could be done anyway because when they're too long you can do something about it, but too short, I'm screwed. I moved away and finally decided to get one of the pants rehemmed. When I took them to a REAL tailor, he pointed out a few things to me denoting the quality of the original hemming done by Arthur's crew at Rittenhouse. First, the pants were hemmed unevenly - one leg was about 1/2 inch longer than the other. And the hemming was done with a single thread that would have fallen apart very easily if I wore them - but, since they were too short and made me look like Steve Erkle I couldn't. Then I started talking to friends who still lived in the neighborhood and the vast majority came out saying they had had negative experiences there. I still visit Philly and I'll never go back to this cleaners. Pros: Can be a nice guy and good cleaners Cons: When he screws up, you're the one that gets blamed more

Bad quality service 5/24/2009

Took 9 pieces of cloths and asked to dry clean. All shirts had minor residue on then prior to dropping off. When i went to pick them up, all residue was still there. All he did was steam them. No cleaning was done. And it was like the old man had never met english speaking latinos before. Pros: Old man was nice to my children Cons: Culturally ignorant and poor dry cleaning service more

Tyrant dry cleaner of Spruce Street 9/5/2008

DO NOT USE THIS SERVICE unless you like painful frustration. Rittenhouse Cleaners renamed in my house as the Tyrant dry cleaner of Spruce Street, brings unprofessional to a new extreme. Pros: clothes get cleaned Cons: if they can find them; yelling; screaming; frustration: all before work!! more

The Absolute Worst Dry-Cleaners Ever. Please Spare Yourself!!!!!!! 6/18/2008

Boy do I wish I had read the reviews of this place before going there. I live in the neighborhood so I figured I'd try them out. All was fine at first until that old man ruined a cream sweater by turning it tie-dye grey. He told me it wasn't ready yet and to come back. A week later it was worse then ever!!!! When I gave him my recipt for the sweater (totally expecting for him to cover my cost). He started cursing at me told me I brought him the sweater this way and to get out of his store. I walk by there bitter everyday and figured if I can spare one person the anguish he put me through then I guess that's enough. Please this man is a liar and completely unprofessional. DO NOT STEP FOOT IN THIS JOKE OF A DRY CEANER!!!!!!! Pros: NOTHING Cons: EVERYTHING more

horrific! 9/1/2007

I went to Arthur with a winter coat back in March b/c it was a european suede coat and i figured he was european and I figured he would know what to do! Boy was i wrong...and what an attitude. First, he ruined the coat but said he was ""working on it"".....i came back every month from march to august and he kept saying ""2 more weeks, 2 more weeks"". When I finally got fed up and pointed out that he had ruined the suede he started screaming and ranting in the most UNPROFESSIONAL manner I have EVER seen. I was in shock....and still am. There are too many good places in philly to even think about going to him.... Pros: location Cons: price, quality, attitude...everything more

""old time"" Philadelphia at its best 7/2/2007

I have never had a bad experience at Rittenhouse. Everything that I have needed has been done well and on time. Arthur ... the ""old man"" is wonderful. They definitely love their locals and always try to remember a face. I would reccommend Rittenhouse Cleaners to anyone ... my only complaint is that the services are a little pricey Pros: good service, friendly local atmosphere Cons: expensive more

An Institution 4/30/2006

Become a regular and you are treated like royalty. The 'old' guy referred to in other reviews can be a true sweetheart. They may not be the 'best' but they are an institution of the neighborhood and they take care of their own. more

mediocre at best 4/22/2006

The quality of the services (dry cleaning and alterations) is not worth the price and the customer service is inconsistent. Though the younger man is courteous, the elderly gentleman who owns the place is quite abrupt and hostile. I recommend going elsewhere. Cons: poor customer service more

Not So Good 4/13/2006

I had the worst experience that I've every had at a service related business. My garments were not completed on time, and when finally completed were done incorrectly. But it gets worse...One garment was lost and then I was accused of already picking it up even though on my reciept it said I hadn't. Note the word ""accused"" - the owner was incredible rude and was confrontational, telling me I had done something wrong. Never seen anything like it. I found myself trying to calm the situation and sort out their problem and I was the CUSTOMER! There are plenty of other dry cleaners in the area. Cons: RUDE, Unreliable, Bad service more
