Completely Overrated 2/9/2009

Our experience at Le Reve was sub-par. I am still unsure why most reviewers compare it to a great French restaurant. Great restaurants have exceptional food. They have career wait staff, who are efficient and who are not patronizing or simpering. Great restaurants do not treat their guests like they don't ""know any better"". Our evening at Le Reve: more

Amazing Evening 1/26/2009

I have been wanting to visit Le Reve because I have heard such great things about it. I was not disappointed. From the moment I walked in the door, everything was top-notch. The attention to detail in the service and dishes was stellar. We ordered the tasting menu (8 courses, plus an amuse bouche and intermezzo) with the chef's wine pairings. The sommelier poured and explained every wine himself. The pours were generous, but with the availabity of the fresh baked breads and the leisurely pace of the meal, none of felt we had too much to drink at the end of the night. None of us had ever such service from the sommelier and we were delighted to learn about each wine and why it was chosen for each dish. Fabian also gave us tips on where to buy wine locally and provided us with a list of the wines we had sampled upon request. I disagree with the previous reviewer that the food was not special. There were a few dishes whose flavors you might taste at other fine restaurants (beet salad), but many were very imaginative (such as the foie gras sandwich and the peanut butter and chocolate dessert). It was apparent much thought and care went into the preparation of each dish, which was only enhanced by the wine pairings. It does take a very long time to complete the tasting menu, so be prepared. If you do not have a lot of time to spend, it would be wise to skip this restaurant until you have an entire evening. We were there for 4 hours. 2 1/2 hours is probably an average and will depend on how many courses are ordered. In fact my only complaint was we waited about 40 minutes between the 3rd and 4th courses, which we felt was a bit too long. Otherwise, I thought the pace was good and gave us plenty of time to chat and digest. Will definitely return again and again! Pros: Fabulous sommelier, amazing food, great service Cons: Time constraints more

Apparently people don't know what fine dining is suppose to be 2/23/2008

We had heard so many good things about Le Reve that we just had to try it. We had to make reservations 3 weeks in advance to be able to get a table. We looked at the menu online and the tasting menu was $105 per person (without wine pairings). So you would think it would have to be good, right? Wrong!! We were extremely disapointed. First, it took us a while to find the restaurant because they do not have any visible signs or anything that says ""valet here"". We got there and were seated and everything seemed to be just fine. Nothing spectacular, but good. I am not excited over the different color napkin based on what you are wearing like the person who wrote a review on here. Any good restaurant does this. They bring bread to your table several times before they start bringing out food. I guess that is to fill you up so that you won't notice that there is nothing special about the food. There are no spectacular tastes or anything. Most of the food that is served you think ""I've had tastes like this before"". Nothing special. Our bill was $254 (and we did not have any alcohol with our meal). We do not mind paying good money if the food is great . Our recommendation is...if you want great food in San Antonio with an awesome atmosphere go to Biga on the Banks. Bruce, the chef, is an awesome chef that actually knows how to prepare great food with an explosion of flavors. You will not be disapointed and will want to go back again and again. Plus the eight course tasting menu at Biga on the Banks is $85 per person. Much more reasonable and you get more and much better tasting food. Don't waste your time at Le Reve when you can experience Biga on the Banks. We learned our lesson. Pros: You get good bread. Cons: No great food. No signs pointing you toward valet parking. No ""great"" waiters. It took us 3 1/2 hours to eat when they say it will only take 2 1/2. more

Outstanding 8/2/2006

Le Reve is a phenominal experience from the moment you enter until the moment you leave. My sister was visiting with me in Houston from New York City and brought the recent write up in The New York Times of Le Reve. A last minute cancellation at the restaurant enabled us to have dinner there. When seated, my sister was given a white napkin to go with her light colored dress and I was given a black one to go with my black slacks. With our water we were offered a choice of lemon, lime, orange or raspberry. I've eaten in many top ranked restaurants in many parts of the world and have never seen this much attention to detail. Many times in a restaurant of this stature the service is stuffy. Not so at Le Reve. Everyone was extremely helpful and very friendly. Each course was amazing. Since our dinner selections were quite different we ordered wine by the glass. The recommendations were excellent. Every guest was made to feel very special. With dessert we ordered the ""ulimate coffee experience"". I've never seen anything quite like it. The coffee started out on one side of the very elaborate coffee server and eventually winds up on the other side. It's quite the production. This wasn't just a good dinner it was a dining experience. We were so stuffed at the end that we couldn't eat the fabuous little cookies they served with the coffee. They put them in a beautiful gift box for us to take back to the hotel. I would go back to San Antonio just to dine at Le Reve. Pros: Food and service are as good as it gets. more

Amazing 7/25/2006

I have visited hundreds of the best restaurants in over 20 different countries and have found few that can compete with the outstanding culinary adventure at Le Reve. Order the tasting menu with wine pairings, you will not be disappointed. more

Not very good. 6/4/2006

I was surprised. Nothing really tasted very good at all. Additionally, we did not like that fact that if one person wants the tasting menu, then they require that everyone order it at the table. Also, the dessert was actually salty, which was rather awful just like the artisan cheese. Don't waste your money and go someplace else with the money you will spend. Like France. more

Elegant sophisticated dinning in San Antonio! 5/31/2006

I wasnt going write a review but I saw the previous one and was struck by two things they said. Why go to France. I've been and this restaurant would be right at home. It would probably get the same ratings there as it does here. I love the food, the textures, the flavors melded together. And then there is the wine. I was pleasantly suprised, the price of wine is usually triple the retail price, at Le Reve only double. I would challenge anyone to find better wine prices at a restaurant in Texas that were better. P.S. Cheese is suppose to be a bit salty. That's the way it's made. Pros: valet, good wine priced righ, intimate Cons: none to be found more

Je l'adore! 7/28/2005

Le Reve was absolutely ""the dream"" I was expecting. The maitre d' recognized that my boyfriend and I were formally celebrating that evening and seated us in the seculded and romantic loft. At other restaurants in the past, we recieved terrible service because of our apparent age. None of that happened at Le Reve. We were treated with respect and courtesy throughout the evening. We began with lescargo. I am now spoiled, for it was my first time and now my expectation wherever I go! I had the Lobster Navarin, and it abosutley melted in my mouth! He ordered the most tender and delicious scallops I have ever tasted. We concluded the romantic meal with the most decadent raspberry chocolate torte. Our parisian waiter was patient enough to carry a conversation with me, an intermediate francophone. (En francias, bien sur!) Le Reve truly is San Antonio's dream. Pros: Ambience, service, food Cons: price more

San Antonio's Best 6/6/2005

I was impressed and amazed at the presentation at Le Rev. It was a gastromical adventure I thoroughly enjoyed through every course. My host chose this Restaurant inorder to impress me(he succeeded). I am a restauranteur and chef who appreciates this level of culinary perfection, Kudos Andrew. I would be remiss if I did'nt comment on the service staff as well. Our waiter and supporting staff exceeded any level of service I have experienced in Texas. Pros: Food, Service, experience more

CHEF WISSMAN IS A GENIUS 5/26/2005

what can i say that has not already been said about le reve? i daresay you will no doubt enjoy the finest meal you've ever eaten here. it rivals the best restaurants in paris, london, & milan. wissman is a genius and it shows in every detail...from the fantastic food to the spotless facilities to the positively top-notch staff. upon first glance you may find the food expensive, but at the meal's conclusion i guarantee you will decide it was worth every penny and more. while le reve is geared to a very sophisticated palate, it does not intimidate or shun the amateur diner. so, come one and come all to le reve. it's something you must experience before you die! and, when i asked my party if 'le reve' was better than sex, i got my share of laughs and surprisingly a split vote! now, that's high praise!! Pros: breathtaking food, amazing staff & chef, trendy environment Cons: location a bit seedy, it is expensive, never wantd it to end more

Heaven on the River 4/1/2004

Andrew Weisman is a true treasure to San Antonio. He is the Chef-owner of Le Reve and is one of the most innovative chefs that I have had the pleasure of enjoying through dining. The restaurant is cozy, subdued, classy. If you are on a schedule, it is not the place to go. If you want to be in control, stay away. If you want to relax and go on a service and culinary treats adventure, this is the place. Just tell him how many courses and let go. It is expensive, but worth it. more

Perfection!! 6/11/2003

Le Reve is the absolute best restaurant my husband and I have ever been to. They paid close attention to detail when it came to us enjoying our evening. We went for our one year wedding anniversary, and they made it the best evening of our lives! If you plan on enjoying their fabulous desserts only get the three course menu because the serve you little items inbetween while your waiting on each course. Most people would expect a snobby environment when going to a nice restaurant, but this place has left that out so you can enjoy your dinner. I highly recommend this to anyone and everyone who are willing to pay the price for a wonderful dinner ( 3 courses are $65 not including wine). Pros: everything Cons: there are none more

An amazing dining experience 1/18/2003

Probably one of the best dining experiences of my life. From the amazing decor, the roses in the bath room, to the sweet bread they bring when presented with the check. The food is outstanding, be prepared to dine for the night as they ""don't rush you"". An extremly romantic restaurant. Share this with some very special. more

unbelievably great 11/13/2002

i have travelled the world over and know of only two other restaurants that have this caliber of cuisine. Pros: wine list, menu, service more

Excellent French Food 8/8/2002

Pricey but excellent French food. For those wanting a sample on a budget, there's an ""early bird special"". Many good wines by the glass. One of the three best restaurants in SA. more
