Avoid the South Location 5/23/2011

I introduce friends to shooting every few months. I've previously done this several time at the Red's north location, and everything has gone great there. At the south location, the setup and staff are no good, especially for bringing new folk into shooting sports. The range itself is designed poorly in a few ways: The lanes are very cramped. It's poorly lit. The pistol lanes are not segregated from the rifle lanes. The area where you sign up to use the range is in the small transition room between the range and the store proper...this room is normally used to limit noise that comes into the store proper from the range...such a room must have at least one door closed at all times for just that purpose. So you can imagine how loud it can get in there. The staff showed incompetence in a few ways: There were only three lanes in use. Despite there being a lane available with unused lanes on each side of it, the range officer assigned us to a lane next to someone firing rifles. It was not pleasant trying to instruct and ease new shooters in to marksmanship when the lane next to you is making noise loud enough to be felt in your body. They also charged us as though we had rented three lanes, instead of renting one. At the north location, I have never been charged for using multiple lanes when renting a single lane for two or more people to shoot at. If you're close to the Red's south location, do yourself and everyone you're with a favor and go shoot at Lone Star Range instead of putting up with a place that doesn't deserve your business. more

...went to Red's this morning with my partner (first time for both of us) and had a wonderful time. The staff were all friendly, helpful, and respectful. Even the customers around us were kind and helpful (although we were probably just lucky on that point...). We had a wonderful experience and we will definitely be back for more... more

Find somewhere else 4/3/2011

I've been dealing with them for 13 years. I've let tons just roll off the back, everything from high prices to their staff passing their personal opinion off as fact in regards to firearms and calibers. I've hit my limit, it's time for me to join a member range and be done with them. Their staff repeatedly talked to my wife like she was a moron for asking about various pistol calibers. She's familiar with guns and know a bit but is interested in learning more. Rather than helping, they made her feel stupid and unwelcome. Last Saturday they threatened to kick me out because I wasn't certain of the barrel length of my rifle. After arguing with them for 10 minutes just to figure out what exactly I was being kicked out for, I had them measure the barrel. It was legal, they didn't apologize but said ""We'll allow you to stay."" As if shooting is a vital service one needs. more

Great people, good times! 2/3/2011

I've known Red and Karen for going on 12 years now and they are fun, friendly and courteous, but don't go in there like a show off...that can cause serious injuries and Red doesn't like that too much, nor do the other people who work there. Yes, I've seen Red tell someone off, but that is b/c they were being/acting stupid and trying to be a ""know it all"" instead of listening to someone who has had decades of experience under their belt. IMO, they deserved the reprimand they received. I love the atmosphere at Red's and as a member of the Austin Sure Shots Women's Pistol League, that practices there, they are above and beyond in instruction, patience and helpful attitude to the newbies that come in and need help. I wouldn't go to any other indoor range in Austin. Red's Rocks! more

Just shoot 2/18/2010

This place is located near Oak hill and the Y and has a great indoor shooting range. for a resonable price more

A True Austin Joint 7/6/2009

I've read the previous reviews and I have to write about my experience at Red's. I went there expecting a rude posse of Bubbas after reading the previous reviews here. Reds is a true Austin 'joint' - the type that is disappearing here. It reminds me a bit of Capital Saddlery, if you've been there. Some of the guys there are Bubba, to be sure. But I found them very helpful and we had a good round of shooting. I got into a good conversation with one of the staff about the shelf life of bullets. He pulled me aside and showed me all kinds of bullets from years ago, some that he had shot himself. He even offered to give me an antique bullet. So I'd actually recommend Red's. The indoor range is a little hot, but hey, its July in Texas. Pros: Run by Bubbas more

Trashy Place & Asss Hole ""Red"" Necks 2/9/2009

Way too over priced, country bumpkins running the joint that are not friendly. Makes since, probably because the location is in Oak Hill. Do not reccomend to anyone, only reason to go is to see for yourself and then leave. It is also too small. If you have not been there, don't let their website fool you, listen to what we are saying and go elseware. Pros: Can't think of any Cons: The whole operation more

Go to a Different Range 9/27/2008

I shot there for the first time the other day and it is not worth the money. $14.00/hr plus .50 per target. Ammunition is about double the price of what it should be. Slow service and bad atitude. I waited 30 minutes for them to sell me a box of 20 for the price of a box of 50. After I realized they overcharged me, they made some B.S. about not taking returns because its against ATF regulations. Guess what, its not. Pros: In town Cons: Overpriced, Dishonest more

decent range; poor attitude 9/20/2008

The range itself is a little crowded and the staff is not too friendly. I suppose if I had b00bs they would be a little friendlier. I will never visit this location again. The north location seems to have a nicer staff and cleaner place and it is managed much better. Pros: In town Cons: expensive ammo, staff is not friendly more

Good service, selection of rentals 1/23/2008

On both of my trips to Red's, I've gotten good customer service, answers to questions without any attitude, and informative explanation of each gun's features. Pros: rental selection, service, price for most services Cons: avoid expensive ammo types more

I love Reds! Monday is Ladies Night. 11/26/2007

Monday night at Reds is Ladies night. Half price ammo, free gun rental and I think its half price booths also. I have had nothing but awesome service at Reds and we have been going for a long time. No wimps or crybabies allowed. more

Arrogant staff 9/3/2006

Red has a big head. Arrogant, and it rubs off on his staff. The range it's self is ok for an indoor. If you have to shoot indoors and don't mind smart a$$ attitude then by all means it's a place to shoot. more
