Editorial review from Citysearch 12/7/2012

This is by far my favorite Chinese restaurant in the Twin Cities. The prices are reasonable and the food is great. I haven't tried everything on the menu, but I haven't been disappointed yet. I particularly like the egg rolls and the fried rice. more

Editorial review from Citysearch 11/2/2012

Good food, reasonably priced. The decor is not great, but what it lacks it makes up for in the quality of the food. I have eaten here more than once and have ordered take-out frequently and have not been disappointed. The staff are friendly, but not to the point that the next customer is delayed in having his/her order taken. more

Mediocre Food With Unfortunate Service 12/29/2010

My wife and I went there on sort of an impromptu date. We ordered the dinner special for two for $13.99 which was a decent deal. The food came out within about 10 minutes and tasted like pretty standard chinese takeout quality food...a notch above a buffet, but not great. They refilled our water a few times which was nice. They didn't take their time in bringing ou the check. It came out and wasn't much more than a piece of paper with scribble marks. I should have caught it, but after a long day I didn't notice they included the tip on the bill(in chicken scratch. In addition to that I left 20% on the table. As we were walking out, they didn't say good bye, but instead asked ""Did you remember to leave anything for your server?"" That floored me and I almost took back the tip at that point, but decided to leave it. In summary, I'd say mediocre Chinese food with poor customer service that left a sour taste in my mouth. Needless to say, I don't think we will be going back. more

Should have trusted my gut 9/6/2010

and turned right around and walked out. Noon on a Saturday and only two tables were taken. The one and only worker (server/host/busboy) noticed us waiting to be seated but decided to wipe down three more tables before showing us to one. Handed us the menus with the briefest of hellos and disappeared for ten minutes. The soup was bland and watery and the wontons had the texture of day old cheese puffs. The egg rolls were big but nothing special. I ordered the sesame chicken which tasted like sickeningly sweet orange chicken. I could have sworn they gave me the wrong order but it was covered in sesame seeds. Do not get the sesame chicken. Just don't go here. The nothing-special-generic sauce on the sweet and sour pork sure didn't make up for how tough and overcooked it was. I'm surprised they didn't somehow mess up the white rice, the only part of the meal that I could actually stomach. Throughout it all the server did manage to once refill our water glasses and was all to happy to hand us the bill. Disregard the plaques on the wall and the newspaper clippings on the front door and stay far, far away from the Red Pepper. more

Don't bother really.. 11/29/2009

Two server ladies. One sweet and the other sour. The sour one makes your stay very uncomfortable by relentlessly bugging you. The food is average and Pricey!...They seemed to have raised their prices recently. To make it all worse, they charge you 15% upfront tips on the total bill and I say WHAT!..The service is bad and you still pay the full tip. The cashier is rude on the top of that. If you go there, just go without expectations. Pros: Authentic appearance Cons: Tips collected automatically more

Good 10/6/2009

I read some of the other people?s reviews and not sure what they ordered but everything I ordered was flavorful - especially for Chinese. I thought it was pretty good and would go back for sure. I noticed service is bad in a lot of ?smaller? Asian restaurants. You just have to tell them they?re being rude and they usually back off. Cons: location - who wants to be in a strip mall more

NASTY, NASTY, NASTY!!!!!!!!!!! 1/2/2009

This is one of the worst places I have ever eaten at! The service was horrible & the food was completely unedible. And the cost was outrageous! Lunch ""specials"" were $15.00?!!? I would not recommend this place to anyone. No wonder it was empty the day I was there.... Cons: Everything!. more

POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE 8/5/2008

Customer service is very poor. I ordered a take out order and asked for sweet and sour sauce. She wanted to charge me .10 for each packet. I had just spent $40 on dinner. If I would have been dining in I wouldn't have been charged. The clerk didn't bother to thank me as I walked out the door. That is the last time I will be ordering from Red Pepper. more

WORST CHINESE FOOD EVER!!!! 6/29/2008

This was, by far, the WORST chinese food I have ever had! If I could give this place zero stars, I would. Where do I begin? (1.) The prices were WAY too high. No lunch menu & $14 for an entree. We got the cheapest things that we could find on the menu- chicken chow mein & pork chow mein. What we got was a big bowl of cooked celery w/ a little bit of rice on the side! Bland & tasteless to say the least! (2.) The service was horrible! We saw our waitress 3 times during the whole meal- once to take the order, once to ask if we needed anything else, & once to drop off the check. We were never even asked if we needed more water! We had to get up & find her just to ask for a straw & chopsticks. I guess that explains why the place was empty. There was another family that came in while we were eating & they left right away after seeing the prices. Even they said that the prices were outrageous! AVOID THIS PLACE! THE FOOD IS HORRIBLE & OVER PRICED & THE SERVICE IS EVEN WORSE!!!! Pros: NONE! Cons: Food, service, price, everything! more

Do not go here 5/17/2008

This chinese was not really good. As someone else stated, it is an awkward dining room with muzak. Servers were ok, but the food was just really sort of ick! I could have whipped up my own chinese better than this. About 5 minutes driving from here is Freshwok on Nicollet and 46th and i was headed there originally and then stopped at red pepper to try it out. I wish I hadnt! Pros: no pros Cons: food, dining room more

Bland Food 4/25/2008

This is my first review - I have eaten at many chinese places over the years and after the disappointing food here, I wanted to share my thoughts. The service was decent, but the food was NOT GOOD. My chicken lo mein was very bland with hardly any flavor, and my date's general tso's chicken was neither spicy (even I could eat it and I can't do the least bit of spice) nor tasty - he said it didn't taste like any general tso's he'd ever had. Also, prices were surprisingly high. We will definitely not be eating here again. more

um., no thanks. 2/15/2008

The service was decent, the atmosphere friendly, But the food was awful. more

Horrible Experience 12/7/2007

I picked up take out during last weekend's snow storm. They sent me home with the wrong order - and when I phoned to try to get a refund, the manager refused to provide one unless I brought the food back. No other solution was offered to me. The last thing I wanted to do was go back out in the storm but, for me, it was the principle! I drove back, returned the food, was issued the refund, and got stuck in the snow on my return home. The only other vehicles on the road were the plows -- and thank goodness one friendly driver took the time to stop and help me. The pizza I had ordered was delivered in the meantime and was waiting for me when I returned home. The manager was downright rude on the phone. She interrupted every time I spoke and basically blamed me for taking the order that was handed to me -- my fault for the mistake. This was the second consecutive time that they had messed up my take out order. I won't be going back! Pros: location Cons: service more

Best Chinese food in the Twin Cities 5/24/2007

I have eaten Chinese food all around the Twin Cities, the east coast and Chinatown in San Francisco and the Red Pepper gets my vote every time. The shrimp fried rice is the best I have had as are the egg rolls. I have never had a disappointing dining experience at the Red Pepper whether I was eating in or getting take out. The only Chinese food that I have ever had that compares favorably to the food served at the Red Pepper was at a Chinese restaurant called The Peacock in Chinatown back in 1969. Pros: Great food, friendly staff, quick service. Cons: Not the fanciest place in town, but who needs fancy when the food is this good. more

Finally, a decent chinese Rest 1/27/2003

Being from out of town, I had a heck of a time finding a respectable Chinese rest. Living in Burnsville doesn't help. Anyway, we tried them all down here and they were terrible. (Who eats at these places?) I read about Red Pepper in here and I've been there 3 times in the first week. The lunch specials are great. We like the capital beef a great deal so far. The egg rolls are amongst the best I've ever had. The hot-n-sour soup is also quite good. And with entries you can choose fried rice without extra $$$. If you are ever in Winona, MN try ""The Great Hunan"" I've had a lot of Chinese(or Hunanese?)but they are the best(I've been to other ""Great Hunan's and they ARE NOT the same) Pros: good food, value, Lunch specials more

Best Edina lunch! 10/28/2002

For about 6 bucks you get a great lunch entree with two sides, rice, and tea. I have been hitting the Pepper alone and with colleagues for six years now, and still go at least once a week. Say hi to Allan your waiter when you go. All together now: 1 from A, 2 from B, white or fried. And never forget: soup always good! Pros: Location, Allan, Cheap more

Best Fried Rice 8/28/2002

They have the best fried rice in town! Not to mention everything else is great, too. It has a nice atmosphere, we enjoy dining in and taking out! This is a 10 for sure!! more
