Not just bad but HORRIBLE 3/18/2011

I had high hopes for this place but was disappointed to the point of needing to warn others. This place may have been great at one time but something is going on behind the scenes now. We just ate there for dinner last night and couldn't believe how over-rated it is for the poor food quality and service. Our group ordered quite a variety of plates--skirt steak, corn tamales, chili rellenos, enchilada, and taquitos. How can you screw this ALL up so poorly right? The tamales, I swear, were out of a creamed corn can; skirt steak was lukewarm and so tough that we all tasted it and decided shoe leather was better; chili rellenos, which I love, were soggy and had no real flavor...a huge disappointment for me; the taquitos were so crunchy from being dried out; and the enchilada tasted as though it was all beans and nothing else. We won't be eating here again and wish we hadn't given the cost of bad food. As much as I wish the TOP CHEF winning chef the best, I doubt anyone with much talent is involved in the day to day operations any longer. This place is now a bust like so many of your every-day, run-of-the mill restaurants; sadly:( more

Huge Disappointment!!! 3/18/2011

This was our final dinner in Vegas for this trip. We are "foodies", and with the publicity of the chef being a Top Chef Master we were very excited to try out this restaurant. Sadly, this place was horrible. Not one of our party of five enjoyed their meal. My order was the corn tamales. The server let me know that these were sweeter than most tamales, which I was hoping for as it would be something a little different. Well - it was definitely something I'd never had before. It tasted like someone cranked open a can of creamed corn and poured it into a corn husk. I couldn't even finish one without the gag reflex. It was so unbelievable that others in my party wanted to try a bit and their response was, "Oh my God, it's just creamed corn!" DO NOT dine there!!! more

Nice atmosphere, food overrated. 7/3/2008

After reading such great reviews of this restaurant, we were somewhat disappointed in our first trip to Border Grill. The chips and salsa were lacking originality and tasted much more like tomato paste than salsa. The poblano chicken enchiladas were great and are highly recommended. Don't waste your time with the chile rellenos. They arrived a tthe table lukewarm and became soggy in the sauce they were sitting on. Have had much better chile rellenos for half the price. Overall, it is a nice atmosphere, but somewhat overrated. When spending this kind of money on mexican/latin fare, we were disappointed in the food. Pros: NIce atmosphere, good service Cons: overpriced and overrated food, expensive drinks more

yummy... recommend 2/12/2008

I'm in and out of Vegas a lot for business... and loved my lunch at Border Grill. The weather was stunning so out door seating was a plus and on a tight schedule so the timing was perfect!! The gaucamole was fantastic as well as the shrimp and chirzo chili relleno special. Its a must visit! I will be back. more

Surprisingly Excellent 4/3/2007

We had an early dinner here on Saturday. We were seated right away without a reservation. The servers are very good and helped us in our selections. My husband had a shrimp and rice dish in a fabulous broth. He loved it! I had the best beef taquitos ever. They were actually jam packed full of shredded beef and fried perfectly where they were crispy not too hard. They had this yummy coleslaw pored over the top that was a great addition for flavor. If you like fresh mexican food this is a great place. more

Decent Food Lackluster Service 3/30/2007

We were in Mandaly around lunch time so we decided to try the Border Grill. We were seated promptly and the waiter took our order promptly. The guacamole was so-so while the salsa provided was below average - not spicy and with very little flavor. We both had the bolillo steak sandwiches: they were both good. The service was decent but water refills were a little slow. As far as mexican food goes - not authentic, more like tex-mex (kind of like an expensive Chili's). more

Hot Tamales on a cold night 12/21/2006

We arrrived on time for our 7PM and were quickly seated downstairs. I had requested a garden view table which proved to be a big mistake on this bitterly cold evening. There was a noticeable draft that was made us feel uncomfortable throughout the meal. Where were those two Hot Tamales when you need them? We started off the meal with complimentary hot taco chips and a trio of salsas ? tomatillo, chipotle and some type of fruit. We both ordered the evening?s special ? Hawaiian sea bass which I believe is Hapu`upu`u or, as it is more commonly known, grouper. It was served with pan seared shrimp in chipotle sauce over Chinese broccoli and chili lime buttered boniato (white) yams. Like Bette Middler, everything was Divine. more

No restaurant is a 10 but this is damn close!! 12/11/2006

Anyone trying to find great food & service in Sin City know how difficult it is to come by. This is as close to perfect as I've found! Appetiser that is a must is the Baja Tostada. Halibut, shrimp, super citrus flavors over a tostada shell... Margarita's are a must and the tequilas are nicely priced for being a strip restaurant. I'm not a vegeterian but I had the Grilled Mushroom Stack and it was such a treat. Special dessert was a flan trio and how special it was! Service was attentive and every suggestion she made was exactly what we were looking for. Ask lots of questions because the server will help you find exactly what you're in the mood for. Most Mexican experiences are painful with heavy, cheesy grease goo. This joint makes it hard for you to stop!! Pros: heated patio, modern mexican music that isn't loud mariachi aye yae yae stuff Cons: heated patio is also smoking area more

Best Mexican Restauraunt I've ever been to 11/19/2006

Food was excellent, I had the skirt steak and tes leche cake for desert, fairly decent mojitos too. Ambiance was great, went with a large group and we were put in our own private section in the restaurant (there appeared to be a few of these available). Service was also incredibly courteous, very attentive, genuine. Go here if you want good food, privacy, and a great ambiance. Pros: Good food, good service. good ambiance, picture perfect dining experience for us Cons: Not close enough to my house! more

GREATEST EVER 1/2/2006

By far the greatest food ever!!! It was late and my husband and I could not agree on anywhere to eat. I remembered seeing the Border Grill signs from our visit to the Shark Reef and am I glad I did. Everything was melt in your mouth wonderful and our waiter was top notch. This will be a regular spot on future trips to Vegas!!! Pros: food, food , food Cons: Not on the East Coast more

again, hands down, absolutely fantastic! 12/21/2005

original review on 12/22/05 my bf and i had dinner here after a long drive from LA. we eat mexican food all the time, but have never had it this good. the server recommended the red roast chicken and enchiladas verdes - both were amazing. the flavors were just right, not too strong and not too weak. the chicken melts in your mouth and the verdes sauce with the enchiladas was incredible. for dessert, we had a slice of the tres leches cake and half a brownie sundae. the tres leches was divine! we're definitely going again AND checking out the one in santa monica. EDIT 12/23/06 as we told both our server (alexandra) and the manager (rob) having dinner at the border grill is always the highlight of our vegas trips! after we went for dinner last year, we went again the next day for lunch! we just couldn't stop talking about it. we always plan a trip to vegas right before christmas so this year was no exception. between trips, back at home in LA, we went to both the border grill in santa monica and to ciudad in downtown and were severely disappointed - it just wasn't the same as the vegas location! to start, you get the chips & 3 kinds of salsa, but you should ask for the extra hot salsa with habaneros and pico de gallo on the side (presumably to cut the hotness of the habaneros). i always have sangria with mexican food if i can and theirs was great! we shared a bowl of tortilla soup and guac too. both were very good - the soup was thick but smooth and the guac was just right. my bf got the enchiladas verdes again, i had the beef brisket taquitos - wow! very distinct taste in the taquitos, but i could only eat two of the four. for dessert, tres leches cake of course and also the choc cream pie. our server was attentive and the manager came by our table to check on us a couple times. he ended up comping our dessert for being such super return customers! the border grill is a DEFINITE MUST for anyone looking for a high quality, calm, non-buffett dinner in las vegas. Pros: salsa, dessert, service, innovative Cons: it's all the way in las vegas more

User review by blondewonder 11/27/2005

I was pleasantly surprised by how many vegetarian options there were here. Although our location left a lot to be desired - in the room where the host stand was located, surrounded by tables of screaming kids - the fresh chips with three kinds of salsa helped ease our hunger due to slow service. My mojito - made with club soda - was the best I've ever had. The grilled portabello mushrooms were delicious, but only came with one flour tortilla and very few extras. My brother's quesadillas looked fantastic, but my mom's tacos were tiny! more

Delicious Food and Killer Mojitos 8/31/2005

I've been to the Santa Monica restaurant and had great food, so when in Vegas I checked this one out. Awesome food with a view of the Mandalay pool and great drinks. Everything is fresh and delicious - the fish tacos, the ceviche, the salads and the slow-roasted marinated meats make for a really substantial meal. Perfect with a mojito or a chilled lime margarita. Pros: food, drinks, ambiance more

  • In Short
Two stories of seating are broken into smaller spaces with colorful art, soaring ceilings and soothing views of the hotel's tropical pool-scapes. The menu offers California-influenced Mexican dishes. Appetizers include rock shrimp empanadas with sauteed poblanos and cheese in a corn pastry, and green-corn tamales. Filling beef-based entrees as well as lighter fish and chicken dishes are available, like the grilled skirt steak marinated in garlic, cilantro, cumin and lime.
