A great store for music and movies if you've got time and cash... 7/5/2010

While Reckless is really good about keeping tab on their inventory (so you can call, email, or fax to check availability), this is a great store for browsing [a lot of "happy accidents" where you find things you weren't originally looking for...] Their selection and pricing is incredibly fair for CD's and DVD's. Most of their used CD's are priced between $3.99 and $8.99 which is a better deal than you'd likely get online after computing shipping & handling fees. Also of help are stickers they place on their display bags to give additional information or stoke interest. The only gripe is the parking situation, as this can be a very busy area... be prepared to walk a couple of blocks and bring some quarters for the meters, you could be there awhile. more

Cheaper discs and a dedicated staff 6/22/2006

A nice runner-up to Dr. Wax. The music runs a bit cheaper here -- used records are mixed right in the normal stacks. Definitely no shortage of music -- I've found that the collection has a slight punk bent. Go here for your side projects & solo efforts, your limited editions, split 7"'s and promo discs. The staff makes it known what they listen to as well -- a listening station lets you hear their favorites. They also fill helpful little labels on the cellophane with enthusiastic copy. They buy music as well -- store credit greater than the cash equivalent. Definitely worth your time. Go to Dr. Wax for the selection, but if you see it at Reckless too, it just might be cheaper. more

Favorite Record Store 5/24/2006

I love how simple it is to shop here. You can check to see if they have the record in by going online, calling,or crusing into the store. Also, you can put records on hold for a week if you don't want to buy it right then and there. more

Everyone Needs a Good Record Store 4/24/2006

Right there in that Wicker Park-Bucktown triangle is wonderful, wonderful Reckless Records. As one who prefers music that is a bit more independent than the typical American Idol, it is so nice to have a record shop with the obscure, and a staff that is well-versed in that obscurity. Although, they are usually too cool to really sell you on something, they are pleasant enough, and they won't bother you unless you bother them, which I like. You can't help but spend considerable time thunmbing through the used selections as well as the new stuff. Whatever you're little heart may desire, as long as it is not too mainstream, but they carry that stuff, too, I mean, you have to make money, right? more

reckless records wicker park store 8/24/2005

any and all types of musick available. listen, inspect vinyl quality, sell/buy dvds videos, vinyl, cds, tapes?, posters and anything else musick related. great selection. couple diff stores around chicago. people who work there are kinda jerks untill they know you. pompus would be the word. but considering its lame-o trendy yuppie wicker park who could expect anything less right?! one problem is they dont seperate punk and hardcore. another problem is the place has been around so long that they know what they have mostly. one might think this is good untill you find the store where they dont know what they have and you walk out paying a fraction of the price for something up on ebay. still decent prices in these psudo-inflationary times. bigest problem unless you bring your own headphones and musick, you have to listen to the horrible tastes of the workers as the music is force fed through house speakers. for anyone wanting anything else besides punk and hardcore this store probably has it. 2% punk/hc 98% dj, techno, soul, pop, oldies... ok anything else too! Im biased because shitcago lacks any real punk record store. more

Reckless Records 8/5/2005

A Chicago indie rock institution, I somehow knew of this place even before moving here last year. Upon my first visit, it was mostly what I expected - tons of music to choose from, and a relatively courteous staff. Carrying both used and new compact discs and movies, Reckless is easily the place to go when you're looking for bargains or to find that obscure song you heard on the radio, but can't quite remember who it was by. The only complaint I have is that the selection of actual records is a little disappointing, but I suppose this is true of most 'record' stores these days. But if you're like most and enjoy the small plastic discs you can put in a computer, Reckless is probably the place for all your music needs. more
