Authentic ambiance and great healthy selection 9/30/2011

The Ramos House Cafe is tucked away behind the San Juan Capistrano Amtrak station in the Los Rios Historic District. Originally built in 1881, the house and cafe have plenty of authentic charm. The owner actually lives in the house and guests are served on a red brick patio. Personal lap blankets are hung over the chairs for use on cool mornings. An Amtrak train stops only feet from the dining patio every half-hour or so and is in no way an inconvenience - to the contrary, we found it to be an addition to the rustic ambiance. We enjoyed the Smoked Salmon Lox with Herb Sauce & Toast Points and Crab Hash with Scrambled Eggs & Sour Cream Remoulade. The portions were large, flavors full and presentation pleasing. The fresh sprouts were a perfect complement to the Salmon Lox. The Crab Hash delivered a hefty portion of crab that would satisfy any seafood connoisseur. Every restaurant should have a signature item that stands out from the rest. For The Ramos House Caf more

Great Bloody Mary's! 7/29/2011

Small but fancy joint I found while tooling around San Juan. What a neat town, great people and my new hangout. The food is DEE-lish and the street is just a blast to hang on. Check em out! more

Amazing food and great setting! 4/13/2009

This was our second visit and it was as good as the first. I love the ambiance, the food and the staff. The Wild Mushroom, Roasted Garlic & Sun dried Tomato Scramble was amazing and the Pomegranate Mimosas were wonderful. I recommend getting their early for brunch (they open at 8:30am) to avoid the line. Pros: Incredible Cinnamon Apple Beignets Cons: Sometime the line can be long more

Diners Beware 9/1/2008

We paid $377 for 6 adults and 1 child to eat french toast.... Need I say more? Seriously though, after we had signed our bill and left, the staff decided to add on a $63 tip (on top of the mandatory gratuity that had already been added to our bill) - I still have not received a call back from the owner-in-residence and am resorting to calling local law enforcement tomorrow.\r \r RIP OFF.... THIEVES....\r \r Oh, in terms of the actual food: every item was over-cooked, even the side order of bacon arrived at the table too nasty to be considered edible.\r \r In terms of service: We had to chase down a waitress after sitting there for 17 minutes just hoping that one of them would even look our way... We had to ask three times for the child's food to be boxed even though it was initially ordered to go. Cons: Cost, Service, Ethics more

Well worth the wait - once your seated you will not want to leave to quickly - hence the long wait- the food is delightful - friendly service - a perfect place to share lunch with good friends - don't forget to pick up a copy of the restaurants cookbook. Pros: Ambience - Food Cons: I don't make it here often enough more

UNBELIEVABLY great Brunch-don't miss out! 5/29/2008

We drive up from San Diego to splurge every now and then and have some of Ramos House's brunch..This place is *so* good--we are hard-core restaurant goers-- and truly, this place is in our top 5 faves(in San Diego/Orange county area)..It is so good, I bought their cookbook & got it signed by the friendly chef/owner himself. The food here is all butter, all cream, decadent, melt-in-your-mouth..EVIL--but DAMN is it so good!!! Truly, don't miss out on this gem!!!!!!! Pros: great food, friendly staff, great ambiance, great place to soak up the whole southern California feel Cons: I can't get enough of it! more

Lovely Cafe with Unique Food 1/10/2008

This place is wonderful. You feel like you're in another world with the rustic decor and beautiful ambiance of old town SJC. Food is very unique and prepared perfectly. Great place to take out of towners or to go on a sunny day. Definately try and go on weekdays as the wait is significantly shorter. Also try the owners other restaurant -- Iva Lee's in San Clemente. Pros: Location, Food, Staff, Beautiful more

Bloody mary's are the best. Most of the time, the wait is forever for b'fast, so don't come hungry, or you will die from waiting.\r Needs to change menu, but if you've go a few times a year then great!!! Lunches are not the greatest, but B'fast is the bomb!!!! Pros: Great Boodly Mary and Biegnets Cons: Long wait, so so lunch more

Romatic rustic hide away 1/18/2005

My all time favorite place for breakfast! Old town where homes are tee rooms, restaurants. and artisans. At Ramos House seating is out side under the sprawling trees on the patio, across the tracks from remodeled Train Station. Sit in the far corner and watch Amtrak go by while smelling the fragrant herb garden in the adjoining area. The seating area is surrounded by an old wooden picket fence overgrown with shrubs and wild vines just like my Grandmothers house. A little bit of rustic nature in the city. Very romantic. Watch the staff pick herbs for your meal. Dont miss the Bloody Marry with spiced green beans and Crab Claw. more
