This Hyde Park gem has been around forever, and its baked goods are some of the best in town. Keep an eye out for their pretty (and sometimes cheeky) decorated cookies!

Attitude galore 11/24/2010

Instead of a cup of coffee, I got a cup of attitude. The product is under average. Bye, bye! I am no longer coming back. more

Bohemian funk 9/17/2010

Quack's on the drag ruled the day, as did Hyde Park Bakery in it's day (for you neos the former morphed from the latter) . Sadly, the merger did them both in, although we still love to pick up some baked goodies on weekend mornings. Anyone remember the Peasant's Soup, or the walnut scones at old Hyde Park baker? They were incomparable. The chocolate croissants, pecan snails, danishes and cute theme cookies are pretty darn up there so much is forgiven. But with the flies, witless, unfriendly need-a-bath-soon staff, dank and glum atmosphere it's a place to stop in and pee, and maybe pick up some baked goods on the way out if feeling sympathetic. Really people, get a clue. It is now only because Hyde Park neighborhood expects a bakery to occupy that spot on 43rd street that the present establishment even exists today. OWNERS: rethink your presence here, you're losing it fast.... If it weren't for Huff smoking cigs on the bench outside, extolling abstruse wisdom through his crackled cosmos then this place wouldn't have any 'je ne se qua' left. more

Nothing notable. 9/7/2010

Great coffee, but you can get great coffee anywhere. Slow service, even to get that cup of coffee. Lots of cheap desserts, but you can also get cheap desserts anywhere. Sandwiches are below average. more

Smells like trash 7/30/2010

This place is terrible. The one and only reason you might consider visiting this place is if you live in the neighborhood, otherwise avoid it at all cost. The coffee is gross, the over priced desserts aren't any better than say a Little Debbie snack cake and I'm not sure what the geniuses at Quack's are constituting as food, but their sandwiches are horrific. I had a Turkey and Brie panini and literally fell ill after a couple of bites. It was most definitely not made to order. You could tell it had been sitting in a refrigerator for several hours. The Barista heated it up on a grill, took him forever, and then the center was cold. I'll never eat at this dump again! Cons: Lots more

Skip this place 7/19/2010

Went in a late Sunday night- trying to satisfy my sweet tooth. The late hours is the reason why I chose this place. When I drove up- I thought- How cute! That was about it. The selection was small, the clerk at the register was not helpful or friendly at all. The website looks yummy and I didn't see half of what was listed. I bought the carrot cake and raspberry cupcake. The cupcake was cold and hard. The only raspberry flavor I tasted was very subtle in the icing. The actual bread part didn't really taste like anything other than bread and it was COLD. The cupcakes should be room temp....not super cold. The carrot cake was good- NOT great. I didn't like it enough to consider going back. Left and didn't finish either pastry. I say SKIP. Pros: late hours Cons: everything else more

Wonderful! 8/10/2008

Quacks 43rd has quite an impressive variety of baked goods! They have some of the best carrot cake and chocolate cake (especially with the ganache!) that I've had anywhere. The cupcakes are amazing! From the REAL vanilla bean buttercream topped white cupcake, (also the best white cake I've ever tasted) to the fancy lemon meringue filled with luscious lemon curd, and topped with perfectly swirled and toasted meringue, it's a sight to behold! \r \r The decorated shortbread cookies are the best tasting and most beautiful in all of Austin! \r The chocolate chip cookies are the best I've had in my life. The ginger krinkle is also high on my list.\r \r The fresh pastries they put out every morning are divine. I especially recommend the cinnamon rolls or butter croissants. And the apple cinnamon pie never disappoints. Everything here is made from scratch!\r \r The atmosphere is easygoing, and it's quite a popular spot in the Hyde Park neighborhood. \r One slight turnoff would be, say, the vagrants loitering around and/or panhandling customers outside, and coming in to fill up on free condiments. No wonder they took away the free water pitcher. It's seemed to help quite a bit. Thanks, management! more

lost its charm 8/6/2008

Remember when... down on the drag? Well they have removed the free water jug, and are actively running\r away, with words and action, long time customers. And then management wonders why business is declining. Oh well its my money and I choose people friendly enviroments to share it with. Pros: they've managed to stay open Cons: thry've managed to stay open more

ALMOST perfect 4/8/2008

Okay, everyone is right. This place is great, great coffee, great baked goods, great place to hang out or study. But I've got one beef with Quacks that really bothers me. It's how they act when you're there late.\r \r See, Quacks officially stays open until 1AM. But come about 12:15, sure enough, the music will be jacked up to whole new volume levels, and the guys working the store will start coming up to your table and sweeping, cleaning, right up next to you, like they're BEGGING you to figure out that they're trying to close soon. I understand they don't want to stay there until the wee hours of the morning, but if you don't want people to stay there until 1AM, don't make your official hours stay open til 1AM!!!! Some of us who study our lives away are attracted to Quacks because it stays open relatively late, but it's just kind of rude to make me feel like I'm past my welcome if I stay past 12:30.\r \r That being said, I keep going back because of the damn good coffee and damn good baked goods. more

Dirty Quacks I love You 7/24/2006

Ok, I love this place but you guys might want to work on the display area...I really don't like to see Fly's trapped behind glass dancing all over the Salty Oat Cookies I am about to buy. Quacks is fun I highly recommend the Salty Oat Cookies and Carrot Cake. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THE ROSEMARY APPLE PIE...I can see where you were going with it but I think you missed the boat slightly. The staff is your typical mix of Oppressed Upper Middle Class Suburban UT Students' (we all know they can be a bit rude at times) The Goods can be a bit stale sometimes and I am always worried about finding a beard hair on my brownie. Enjoy. Pros: Salty Oat Cookies Cons: Apple Rosemary Pie more

Mmm good coffee 7/5/2005

I really like Quacks! The parking can be a little difficult sometimes, but it's worth it. If you're looking for a chance to try this place out, just look at the back of your HEB receipt - I got a coupon for 75c off a coffee and a muffin, which was how I found the place in the first place! You won't be disappointed.... however, you may want to pass on the bran muffin - it's not as good as the regular muffins. Oh, and the coffee is delicious :) Pros: good coffee, relaxing atmosphere more

heaven in hyde park 4/17/2005

I've been coming to Quack's regularly for the past four years that I've lived in Austin. I've tried just about everything on the pastry menu and it's always been delectable! I especially recommend the brownies and the eclairs. It's also a great atmosphere to study for a few hours. If only they still had the bottomless cup of coffee... Pros: great pastries, good value, study spot more

Yummy 7/23/2002

Their Key Lime Pie is the best that I have ever had. It is perfect, but you have to buy it while you can. They tend to disappear fast. All of their pies and cakes are good though. I also like their cookies. My favorite is the ginger crackle. It is really spicy and yummy. The atmosphere is nice too. It's got that tucked away in a neighborhood feel to it, and it is dog friendly. They have a little bowl with free doggy treats. Pros: good hours, people watching, nice neighborhood Cons: supply versus demand more
