This place makes actually WANT to workout 2/27/2011

Pure Austin is a great gym for those of us that hate going inside to workout. I'd rather play outside to stay active, but I wanted gym workouts too. Pure Austin gives me everything I could want. Both locations are squeaky clean, full of sunlight from the giant windows, and *no big box gym feel*. The equipment is kept up well and has lots of variety. I love the back space in the downtown gym with a climbing rope, kettle bells of all sizes, medicine balls, speed bag, TRX bands and sooooo much more to keep my workouts functional and entertaining. (This is a great area to watch trainers with their clients to learn some great new moves!) Up north, they have a climbing wall that for some reason rarely has anyone on it, so you don't have to share it! The private lake in the back is perfect in the warm months- I've gotten hooked on stand up paddleboarding there. I haven't tried the kayaking yet, but I can't wait. I see triathletes of all levels training for open water swimming out there as well. The trail around the lake is beautiful and gets even a non-runner like me to take a few laps after I do some laps in the pool out on the deck. I love that the classes are all free and the instructors are not ditzy aerobics types, but give you a legit workout without all that annoying 80s/90s cheesiness. Monthly dues are about $65- more than some gyms, but you get what you pay for. Pay attention to the contract; it's standard for all the gyms I've been to, but this way you're not surprised by something after you've been a member for awhile. Don't blame the gym because *you* didn't read it. After all, they go over it and it's only one page long. more

Cool Gym! 2/3/2011

This is not your run-of-the-mill gym... It offers killer classes & up-to-date equipment @ a fair price. The people & the vibe are the epitome of Austin- Cool. more

Do not join this gym! 11/19/2009

This place *looks* like a good gym and its clean with good equipment. But the management is horrible! I bought a $13 item from them and when I got home, it turned out to be bad. I went back and they refused to take a return because I didn't have the receipt. According to them ""I could have bought it somewhere else."" Yeah, right, after two years of paying the monthly dues, a middle-aged guy is going to try to scam the place for $13 worth of product. They actually called me a liar to my face! This isn't a community-minded business, it's like Walmart with weights (oh, wait, at Walmart they stand behind their sales). Take your business to a place where they treat you with dignity. Pros: Good location, good equipment Cons: Nasty management more

Good gym. Terrible indoor cycling coach. 12/23/2008

I've been going to Pure for quite some time. It's good place to workout, but I've come to really dislike a few of the employees who use the place as their personal pick-up bar. One in particular as a portly bald guy who teaches ""spin"" classes. You can see him wondering around the gym nearly every evening hitting on new female members. It's repulsive and sleazy. more

Disgruntled 9/4/2008

Be wary of third party billing company! Have seen several complaints by several frustrated former members. You can't even resign from the gym in person. They make you deal with this third party company. Ruined an otherwise good gym experience. more

Best fitness gym in Austin!! 5/19/2008

Clean, professional and always up to date on the latest equipment and new fitness methods. Everyone there is knowledgeable, helpful and ready to motivate you to work out and reach your potential. Whether you are a professional athlete or a just starting this is the place to get fit and strong. it is also a locally owned and operated gym - if something is wrong you can find out how to fix it through the excellent management staff or the owners who are, more often than not, either in the office or teaching a class. They practice what they preach and know their fitness from top to bottom. Pros: Very Clean facilities, modern equipment, knowledgeable staff and owners on site! Cons: parking - but that is about to change for the better more

Best Gym Ever 5/19/2008

I love Pure Austin! It is the best gym ever. I have been a member for two years now. I normally go to their quarry lake location. Yoga with Haya on Mondays and Pure Sculpt with Tiziana on Thursdays are my absolute favorites! more

Great Gym 3/3/2008

I too am surprised at the negativity of some of these reviews. I too went through the signup process, and read over all of the documents carefully, so I wasn't surprised at the 1 year term or anything else. It's all fairly clearly spelled out on the signup sheets. Pros: Great ambience, clean equipment, clean bathrooms Cons: Parking is inconvenient right now (until they get the new parking garage built) more

great gym! 2/22/2008

I am surprised at the negativity in these reviews. I understand that breaking contracts can be difficult, but that isn't the gym's fault. Read your contract! Pros: Personal Training Staff, motivating environment more

Horrible Customer Service 2/19/2008

So I signed up for a 3 month membership, liked it, decided to sign up for 1 year. The sales person, or young, inexperienced greeter said I would get a few things for signing up for 1 year. One of them was 50$ on my key card. After a few weeks, there was nothing on my key card and when I asked a ""manager"" about it she said that because I signed up before I was ineligible for any of those incentives, even though I still payed the same $150 initiation fee a 1st time member would pay. The girl who signed me up also knew I had been a member before because I kept the same key fob and parking sticker. more

Horrible policies and service! 9/30/2007

I paid roughly $930 in advance for an ""executive"" membership that lasts for 13 months. Soon after, I got pregnant and Pure Austin offers absolutely no regular prenatal programs, unlike some other gyms and studios in town, such as LifeTime Fitness or Yoga Yoga. I tried in vain to cancel my membership and get some of my money back, but the gym and their billing service wouldn't let me. The gym could not have been less helpful or understanding. DO NOT JOIN PURE AUSTIN if you want any flexibility, or think you may move or need to cancel! THey have TERRIBLE customer service and policies. They also have terrible options for pregnant or postnatal women and don't offer childcare. Join another gym, such as LifeTime! Cons: Terrible cancellation policies and customer service more

Loud but nice, avoid Mondays 8/13/2007

Pure has nice selection of equipment. Good selection of classes. Equipment is well maintained & very clean. Bathrooms and locker rooms are very clean. Pros: Equipment, CLEAN, close to home Cons: Too loud (sound like Golds Gyms) more

Great Gym! 7/16/2007

I love it at Pure Austin! I am also a Curves girl and wanted another gym where I could be accepted and treated with respect even though I am not in shape. I also need a place where I could get my cardio in to supplement my Curves workouts. Pros: Location, Atmosphere Cons: N/A more

Worst GYM EVER!!!! 6/11/2007

This place is terrible!!! I joined when I was working down town and it was ok. I liked the classes. When I relocated to West Austin I wanted to cancel my membership. My contract was over I thought it would be a snap. It wasn't!!!! First they made me call a collection agency . It took an hour on the phone to get them to cancel my membership. They made me pay for a full extra month. That made me unhappy, but I accepted it. THEN... IT TURNS OUT THEY HAD NOT CANCELED MY MEMBERSHIP. THEY CHARGED ME FOR THREE MORE MONTHS. Pure Austin denied any responsibility. The collection agency would not give me a refund either. So... I had to have my credit card company stop payments to them. Which is a pain in the neck. Overall I would not recommend this gym. Pros: It was close to my work. Cons: Impossible to end membership!!!!! more

Quit yer belly achin' and grow the F up. 5/7/2007

I'd been looking around at the different Gym options around town and was won over by Pure. The facilities are clean and the atmosphere is great. The variety of classes they offer with the membership is enough to win me over even if I never used any of the machines. Plus the YMCA which is right down the street from Pure I figured would offer a much cheaper membership, To my surprise the Y is almost as much as Pure. more

Read the fine print! 4/27/2007

I loved Pure Austin when I first joined. Tons of space, lots of machines, no time limit on the cardio equipment. What's not to like? Unfortunely, I needed to change gyms. I went in to cancel my membership in person and I was given a card to a finacial cooporation in Arkansas. I called the number in Arkasas. This is where I found that I could not cancel my membership before one year. I went back to Pure Austin to speak to management the same day. No help there-it was all my fault. He passed my number on to someone else. She promptly called me back. Still my fault. Okay, maybe I was naive. I didn't flip the contract over and read the fine print. My point is NO ONE that worked for Pure Austin made me aware of the simplest and most important issues of the contract. Mainly, that you cannot cancel a membership prior to a one year commitment. Oh, and if you want to freeze your account, think twice. They add that time back onto your contract, meaning they extend it. I also found this out, not by anyone at Pure austin, but by speaking to another Arkansas phone representative. I will take partial blame. I assumed the sales girl was telling me all I needed to know when I sat down to sign the contract. WRONG. But what makes it okay for business to continue to request money for a service no longer wanted? It is not ethical. It is not moral. It is stealing plain and simple. Before you sign your name on that gym contract know all of the nitty gritty. Because that free gym bag you get with your membership may not be so appealing after all. Cons: They don't tell you everything you need to know at contract signing. more

Impossibly to cancel membership 2/28/2007

Took 30 Minutes on the phone, and then an email, and now 30 days. Completely absurd. Not a bad gym (although a bit of a meat market) but they really should bring their customer management in house or use a less confounded/time consuming option. more

Best in Austin 8/1/2006

This place is awesome. The staff is friendly and very professional. After going to another health club and treated like a number, I am very happy with the level of service I've received. I will never go back! They've found a member for life! more

This place rocks 2/27/2005

I love this place. It is so clean and friendly. They are not chewing gum and yapping on the phone while I am waiting on them. This gym delivers. It inspires me to do better. Thanks Pure Austin. Pros: equipment, staff, tv/music more

Will Ross 2/11/2004
