Best

The food was great, and cheap for how much you get. Fantastic drinks try the lemonade one and bartenders are friendly. Great music too check it out.

What a great place! 9/15/2004

This place is very elegant and classy, yet the staff is totally laid back which is awesome. We usually go and sit at the bar for a glass or two of red, and whoever is behind the bar always makes fantastic suggestions. The second time we went in, the bartender and chef remembered us and came over to say hello. Whoever mentioned that the staff treats you like friends is so right on, and unfortunately it's so rare these days. Last night we went in and it was my birthday, the chef found out and gave me yummy dessert - just lovely. The dessert wines are fabulous. Next time I'm definitely ordering the fondue because it looked to die for! Pros: the staff, wines, the chef more

Excellent Spot That Has Flaws 7/18/2004

Although I have been here a couple of times, I recommend this place for its overall performance. The food was tasty and the wines were excellent. We tried a white based on the waitresses recommendation and it did not disappoint. Service was very poor (but I think the waitress was way overbooked on tables). Despite the lack of attention (and she was absent for long periods) she was personable enough to compensate for any perceived slights. I would like to see more California Cabs, but that is very much a personal pref rather than and overall observation. Pros: Tasty Wines, Good Values, Good food Cons: , Service was poor more

How aboout those wines 6/18/2004

if go around the city and look for good wines, you will find the best values here! The same wines that you find at Punch&Judy for $30/$35 are at $50/$55 on other wine lists - have them by the carafe and you can taste as many different wines as you wish - on top of it there is always something new to try.... down to earth, not pretentious, good wine, good food, good prices, there is no better place for the summer! Pros: Great prices, food+wine to share, outdoor seating more

Definitely the chocolate fondue! 4/4/2004

I would definitely return for the chocolate fondue, it was interesting, beautifully presented and delicious! Before that, I had the duck duck goose salad. When it arrived, it sent my dining partner into a laughing fit because it was so small. The duck confit was absolutely nowhere to be found. His plate was equally ridiculous in size and a bit bland. But the bread basket was great! It came with different butters and oil, including an amazing basil olive oil. If I go back, I think I'll pass on the food, and just enjoy the bread basket and the fondue instead! Oh, and some wine too! Service was so so, but if that's not too important to you, you can still have a wonderful evening here! Pros: chocolate fondue, nice lighting Cons: , expensive wine more

Relaxed *and* classy... 3/13/2004

Wonderfully varied wine (and beer) list with a staff happy to help you navigate it. You'll want to linger for hours. Go with a date or a friend or two, and split bottles or half-bottles. Bread basket is awesome, too. Pros: Helpful bartenders, Not super-pricey, Great selection more

everything well thought out 12/13/2003

Great food, great service, excellent wine list, good neighborhood, knowledgeable staff . What's not to like? Good place to take a date or even to meet people. Late night hours always a plus. Bathrooms very clean. Pros: great wine list, great pairings, knowledgeable staff Cons: need more cheese more

Wonderful... 12/12/2003

Not much more to say, but this place is fantastic...the wine selection is fantastic, the food is really good & the service....just so well done. Great wine bar...possibly my favorite in the city... more

The Best 10/23/2003

There is simply no better bar in New York. I challenge anyone who is not a pretentious __ to go here and not fall in love. There's not a single food item over 12 bucks and it is some of the freshest in the city. Amazing wine list and extremely helpful and friendly staff. By the way, the owner is as down to earth as there is and I stand all the time with no problem. Any negative reviews you see about this place is bull. Pros: Great wine and food, Awesome staff, inexpensive Cons: none more

Very cute! 8/22/2003

This is a great little wine bar. You must try the chocolate fondue for two!!! They have many different typed of wines if thats what you like. I loved their dessert wines. Place is very romantic with candles and they have the nicest, cleanest bathroom in all of Manhattan! Pros: desserts Cons: a little cramped more

Fantastic 5/13/2003

People complaining about not being able to stand should stick to keggers at the frat house or better, travel a little - this is how a wine bar should be, but better. Excellent eclectic wine list, yummy food. Owners are charming and not sycophantic, which is a problem if you're from the self-involved world of "do you know who my daddy is?" If you feel that being a customer negates any responsibility to be gracious, can only have a good time if you're obnoxious to a waitress dependent on tips, have a compulsion to show off that someone is kissing your a-- because you have $60 in pocket, stay away. Staff treat you like friends - do the same and have a fab time. I love it - most complaints seem bratty. It's not a pub - Grow up. They could use more Italian wines, but that's a personal preference... Pros: laid back staff, elegant stemware, sexy environment more

terrible owner! 4/30/2003

We were there for a bday party and a couple of friends came late and had to stand. The owner proceeded to rudely dismiss us as we were not "allowed" to stand. He dropped the bill then told us to leave and then followed us outside to harass us further. What an attitude! more

Mortified..... 3/29/2003

Last night we went to this place for a friend's birthday. Once we sat down the RUDENESS began right off the bat. The attitude of the staff was so bad that we could not get out of there fast enough. This was the icing on the cake: The bar back came over with a birthday cake. He sat it down and we all started singing happy birthday, almost done with the whole song and the waitress comes over and takes the cake and says sorry this is not yours...... We all thought it was a joke. SHE TOOK IT AS THE BIRTHDAY GIRL WAS READY TO BLOW OUT THE CANDLES........ I was completely mortified.... I just cannot explain how RUDE a person can be in this industry where they depend on tips. I am done; all I can say is STAY AWAY, FAR AWAY... more

Excellent 2/1/2003

Excellent place to go with friends on weekday and weekend nights. Staff is knowledgeable, food is good most nights, although the sandwiches can oily. An excellet place to relax, especially if you live in the neighborhood. Pros: Friendly, Not overpriced, Relaxing Cons: Smoky more

I LOVED it 1/24/2003

My friend and I went to Punch & Judy very much on the spur of the moment and loved it from the moment we entered. The hostess was really nice and welcoming, and was very accomodating to us (there were no available tables at the moment, but she got us a space at the bar, which was actually what we preferred). The bartender made great (and affordable) suggestions for us (they perfectly matched our chocolate fondue), and the entire atmosphere was hip without being pretentious. I would definitely go again. Pros: great service, great selection more

I can't breath! 1/17/2003

On Friday night I walked in there and I found the place to have a nice romantic candley atmosphere, I thought I was going to have a fun night! I mean yes they have a large selection of wines, but why didnt they spend any money on ventilation?? Everyone is smoking (i'm a smoker myself) and it was just so stuffy in there! The waitress didn't seem like she knew much about wines and I don't mean to be a snob but we ordered about 3 bottles of wines and we drank one bottle at a time, I did expect them to change my glass when we went for the next bottle but the waitress said she couldn't do that! and this is a "Wine" bar? anyhow dispite the nice atomosphere at the bar I wouldnt go back because of the stuffiness and the illknowledged waitress. Cons: No Ventilation, Service more

Other reviewers are wrong 1/16/2003

Unfriendly staff? That is so far from the truth. This place is warm and inviting, and so are the staff. When I went there with a friend, we were seated promptly. Once seated, the waitress was very nice. Good snacky food, wine served in exquisite wine glasses. What more can you ask for? more

Horrible people work here. 1/1/2003

I agree with the last reviewer. Very, very, very rude staff. Just because you work in a trendy place and serve overpriced drinks doesn't mean you can treat people the way they do. Go elsewhere. Pros: None Cons: Mean staff more

forget this place 12/30/2002

Why anyone would come here is beyond me. Bad attitudes from all the staff and it got worse from there. Go elsewhere. Cons: Needs new starff more

let punch & J knock you into where night 12/18/2002

I cringed when a friend suggested heading to the LES for a "trendy" wine" bar with $12 snacks. She got the last laugh, this is one of the best new spots in the city. Great service, amazing food (well worth the price) and an amazing wine selection for every budget. Plus, you can smoke like you're in Europe (at every table!) well at least for a few more months. Pros: attentive service, non snob factor, great atmosphere Cons: crowded make a res, smallish food portion more

  • The Scene
Owner Constantine Mouzakitis spent years in the family wine business before opening this sophisticated den, where classy couples chat in red vinyl theater chairs from the 1930s, or drape across couches in the back room. Full-bodied wines, tranquil music and a fog-like darkness make it a sultry place to end the evening. (Did we mention the chocolate fondue?)

    The Draw
Sample the flavors of hidden-gem vineyards in Australia, South Africa and the rural fields of France, where locals usually sop up most of the vintage stuff before the public gets a chance. Cheese plates, Mediterranean platters and aromatic bread baskets with flavored butters and oils make it easy to dine European. And that chocolate fondue? One of the city's best arrives with fresh fruits, peanut butter cookies, slabs of cake and candied cashew-covered bananas. That's dinner in itself.
