Terrible experience 1/24/2010

The food is sub-par. I had the Belgian roast chicken, which was a chicken breast with tomato sauce on it over mashed potatoes. I didn't see any honey-cider glaze or spinach like the menu said. It reminded me of a bad wedding reception meal. My date had the veggie burger but the bun was hard an inedible. We also ordered the nachos...their definition of ""pico de gallo"" seems to be diced unripe tomatoes. There were clumps of velveeta in the middle of the chips and not much else. The chips didn't even taste good. Worst nachos ever. Apart from the food, the seating arrangement was horrendous. We were there with a group of 14 people celebrating a friend's birthday. Even though the reservation had been made a week in advance, we still had to wait 45 minutes for a table. They finally seated us at a long table but the restaurant quickly filled up with people since there was some kind of all-you-can-drink event starting at that hour. People began pushing up against us and as the other tables around us finished eating, they removed the tables and the space filled up with more people until we found ourselves eating in what felt like the middle of a dance floor in a club! And not even a good club. The experience was so bad that the General Manager gave us all free desserts and $20 gift cards. That will buy one and a half cocktails in this place. more

Good for happy hour, little else 1/12/2010

I've been to Public House before for a drink or for happy hour which has been fine. It's a great crowd and the staff is usually very nice. Recently ate there for the first time and was completely blown away by how terrible the food is! I couldn't help but think that the kitchen was joking! With 6 of us at the table, everything ordered was consistently bad and the recipes were just weird and absurd. I'm not one to complain but there were weird spices and combinations of food used; the tzatziki sauce was a dill-disaster, the hamburgers were overly-flavored with oregano, and the buffalo chicken wrap was served with tortilla chips with a side of hot sauce. Not sure when Frank's RedHot became salsa or why a buffalo chicken wrap is even mexican in the first place to warrant tortilla chips... The appetizers seemed ok (how hard is it to mess up nachos though?) but everything on the menu was extremely overpriced. The food was such a disappointment that I've vowed to never eat there again. Pros: great looking bar, young crowd Cons: absolutely terrible food more

Horrible first impression- sorry 2/19/2009

\r I went there randomly last night because my sister was supposed to guest bartend. They were not friendly at all. My father was a bartender for 40 years and always had a cheerful smile. I believe that when you are a bartender or SERVING someone you should always be polite. I don't remember seeing any smiley faces. I had heard multiple things before I went about the place and the only good thing I heard was this place was great for happy hours. I don't remember hearing anything about great service which should always be apart of any business. I am disappointed with the staff and how they disrespected 2 girls who were asked to guest bartend. I guess if they had brought some friends they would have made more money for their business but they still would be serving beer and drinks with grumpy faces....you can't win. more

Not impressed... 10/15/2008

Didn't hate it, but didn't love it. Atmosphere was cool - but it got WAY too crowded (not their fault) and the wait and prices for drinks was ridiculous (WAS their fault). Drinks were pretty strong, great selection, but over all this place didn't impress me. The bartenders were a bit slow and seemed to ignore people pretty easily (even hot chicks with nice cleavage!) \r \r They took pictures of a couple of my friends but never posted it on the website - perhaps my friends weren't glamorous enough? Or didn't fit their ""image?"" Either way, if you ask to take a pic of people for your site, make sure you post it on the site. That's just good PR. Pros: Atmosphere, Location Cons: Long Lines, Long Weights, Expensive more

Worst Bar Service Ever! 5/13/2008

The actual bar is very nice, however the service to get a drink was terrible. Seems like the bartenders only serve their friends and/or regulars. Its one thing to pay expensive prices with good service, but another to wait around and pay high prices for bad service. I wouldn't recommend this bar unless you are a designated driver. Pros: Some nice looking women Cons: high prices, slow service more

Better chefs and coupon policy needed. 4/6/2008

Hamburger served on burned english muffin. C'mon even Burger King serves hamburgers on a nicer roll. Hamburger also contained a spice that is not usually added to hamburger because my wife got ""hot cheeks"" from the spice. Possibly oregano. Single slice of tomato was from top of tomato and was complete with core. Green beans were greasy. Read all fine print regarding coupons. Need to spend about twice as much as coupon for it to be valid and must only order entrees. Very limited selection of items without cheese, shellfish, and pork. No early bird specials. Good service. I liked the place better when it was the Dock Street Brewery.\r \r Has mostly a bar atmosphere and is for a young crowd. Waitress ""Kelsey"" was nice, efficient, and attentive. No problems there more

Anti-Climactic and Quite Average 1/20/2008

Heard about this place for quite some time now and finally visited on Saturday night. I have to say it's WAY OVERRATED. This place is a haven for arrogant post college frat guys that now have jobs. Watch them cavort with girls in tiny clothing and wannabe somebodies. For women, this place is all about cleavage. That's the key word. After you get past the obnoxious door man who makes you take of your hats (??), you enter into a plain and quite anticlimactic interior. We didn't eat but drink prices were ok. But you can have the same drinks elsewhere with a better environment. Too much hype with this place. Ironically, when we left there was a crowd of people waiting behind a rope to get in to this place. What a joke. As if this is Hollywood or Manhattan. C'mon folks, this is Philadelphia! Pros: Women in tiny clothing Cons: Too many guys saturated in cologne and greased up hair, average space, too crowded more

Great Food 9/8/2007

I work a block away and I am at Public House once a week for lunch. The food (filet sliders in particular) are to die for. Their salads are big enough for 2. I think everyone that works there are always trying to please you. I take clients as well as frineds to the Public House. I also go pretty often for Happy Hour and its always great and the music is amazing. The Public House is fun, clean and a great time Pros: food - service Cons: some times gets very lound more

Avoid this place at all costs! 8/19/2007

My main reason for stating this is the food. I have been to Public House for various reasons since summer of 2005. They have gone through various incarnations of their menu and still it remains an absolute DISAPPOINTMENT particularly for the prices they're charging. It is painful that such a beautiful & clean space is so poorly represented by its food. They keep changing their menu and they're still not getting it right; I guess they figure that if the appetizers are ok they can keep serving the rest of the garbage on the menu. WRONG! Sometimes, we'd like a meal--not just hummus! They have a grilled cheese & tomato soup on the menu. I can get a better sandwich at the same price at TGI Friday's across the street; the cheese won't be half melted, it'll be on appropriate bread which isn't burned along with the bacon. BTW, it's obvious you ripped this dish off from Top Chef & TGIFridays--why can't you come up with your own ideas? I can get a better & cheaper burger over at Mace's which is a block away; they won't serve it to me on a burnt English muffin. Their drinks are overpriced-- this is Philly people! $11 for a glass of wine??-- and the food, other than the appetizers, is of horrible quality. I have gone back to this place a few times b/c it's convenient and many of the staff are very nice (mostly the guys, the women don't seem to put much stock in being nice to other women!) but I am sorry, it's just not worth it anymore. You guys have it right with the space and the vibe is occasionally cool (during the summer it's great b/c it's less crowded and u can actually go there and hear yourself talk) but your food has never lived up to its potential. Maybe the people who keep giving this place good ratings don't care that they're getting ripped off or are used to eating mediocre food but if you care about what you put in your mouth and how much you spend on it RUN AWAY from this place. Pros: Beautiful space, occasionally nice atmosphere, nice servers especially Emir Cons: Overpriced wines, LOUSY FOOD, Corny singles scene, can be overcorwded more

Worst customer service! 8/2/2007

My friends were staying at the Embassy suites on 5/25/07 so we all decided to go to Public House for lunch which is around the corner. We get there around 2PM and we are seated promtly by the hostess.\r It is a saturday afternoon and there are only a few tables ocupied. We looked over our menus for 10 minutes and no one stopped at our table. We put our meus down because we already knew what we wanted and waited another 5 minutes. Still no one stopped over at our table after 15 minutes! After this we got up and told the hostess that no one came to take our order and left. I have no idea what the food is like here because the customer service is horrible. I will never eat, drink, or stop in this establishment again! Pros: Nice Hostess Cons: Horrible Service more

Great experience, even in a group 4/24/2007

The other reviews are correct. This is a great place. We had a group of 10, and with a prior reservation this restaurant had no problems accomodating us on a busy Saturday night in the springtime. The bar area is well-stocked, and promptly handled everything from beer to gin and tonics to special whiskeys straight up.\r The menu is informally printed, and the restaurant is pretty casual, but the food is excellent. Our group ordered everything from a New York Strip steak to seafood and veggies wrapped in parchment paper to ribs to shrimp creole and it was all great! Service was extremely attentive and pleasant all around.\r The bar area was quite entertaining, very active with a 20-something crowd that was enthusiastic but well-behaved. Fun to watch.\r Located in a nice part of the city, with the Franklin Parkway, Logan fountains and Art Museum outside the door forming a picturesque backdrop for an after dinner stroll. My out of town group was impressed and had a happy experience. Pros: Great service, great food, fun atmosphere in casual setting Cons: None that we experienced more

My new place 3/25/2007

The place is pretty impressive. They got all things covered. I have been there many times for the bar scene and always had a great time. Hate the lines. Went the other night for dinner because we were around on a weeknight and i was really impressed. Had the Hummus and it was very good, the Ribs were the best. The meat fell of the bone (not kidding) and my friend had the burger which was cooked right on and not your typical crappy burger. Service was very good, very happy, very attractive. Oh yeah the manager told us to have the Cookie thing for dessert. She told us if we didnt think it was the best dessert since we moved out of our moms house she would buy it. I had to pay for it...it was that good\r Only advice, get ready of the lines... Pros: Food, Cookie Dessert, Ribs, Girls Cons: Lines more

No, thanks. 11/19/2006

Went on a Saturday night with a friend's recommendation. What a mistake. I don't know what happy hour is like there, but we showed up at 10 PM.....it's so loud you have to shout to order drinks.....after trying to get a bartender's attention for 15 minutes, and then pay about twice as much as you should. In the men's restroom, the attendant was letting people who were obviously regular customers ahead of many people who had already been in line for 10-15 minutes, which upset a lot of us. I will give the crowd some credit, however; for the most part, this place seems to attract a good-looking, well-dressed young professional group. At the same time, that type of crowd also seems to draw out all the South Jersey / South Philadelphia Gotti-wannabes. You know who I'm talking about - the guys who shave their sideburns into a point, slather some self-tanner on to get the spots they missed in the tanning bed, and wear CZ earrings they picked up at JC Penney along with their ""club glasses"". Give me a break. Pros: Good-looking girls (both bartenders and crowd) Cons: Long lines EVERYWHERE, drinks are way overpriced, terrible atmosphere more

Horrible! 4/24/2006

Originally from Philadelphia and now living in New York, I went to hang out with some friends at the Public House on Sat night to have some drinks. It was raining very hard that night!! Well we waiting in line for over an 1 and a half hours. There was seriously only about 20 people ahead of us in line. We were in a group on nine. It was amazing to see how many people walked through the door ahead of us because they knew someone who works there. After finally getting in the door the place was not even that crowded!! more

Impressive 3/23/2006

Had dinner there the other night to watch the first round of ncaa. TV's were great...Sevice was great, and food was what I have been looking for. We had 12 of us so it took some time to get a table. Place was packed with girls. Good times at Public House Pros: tvs, food, service Cons: too bright, no sound for game more

WOW!!! 3/9/2006

Great food, service is great (most of the time) and you dont break the bank when you go there. Its great. I go with all my friends for happy hour and before you know it you are eating, then drinking, then dancing and then the lights come on and you realize you may have stayed a little past happy hour. the only thing i can say to improve is get rid of the lines... PS. Guys in suits are hot Pros: feel, open, food Cons: lines, parking more

Terrible Food, crowded bar 2/4/2006

The food is terrible here and you should never eat here. The atmosphere is good for single people. The noise level is very high, so almost impossible to talk. Get there early or you'll have to wait in line. Pros: clients Cons: food, noise level more
