Good Bookstore 5/11/2006

This is a great place to go to browse around for a few books. They have books on many different topics and all of them are at pretty discounted prices and this is because many of them are used. However, I usually only go here to browse around for general reading. While I may get better prices here than other places, the selection is better at the bigger stores and they have more copies books there. But if your looking for something good to read at a good price, then you will definitely find that here. more

Powell’s Books 4/25/2006

Books are jammed literally into every corner of this old used book store. This isn’t the place to go if you’re looking for something in particular (though the staff, in my experience, has been very helpful and nice.) This is a place to go if you love browsing through books. There is always an interesting selection on display in the window and on tables in the store, and there is frequently a box of free books sitting outside. The downside is that there's nowhere to sit and read. The upside is that the place smells like old books, you can browse, get something to read for cheap, and head across the street to Caffe Florian. more

One of the best used bookstores in Chicago 8/5/2005

Powell's is a Hyde Park Institution. Catering to the University of Chicago crowd for years, Powell's stocks an extremely eclectic variety of used books. Since this is a University community we are talking about, most of the books here have an academic bent to them, true, so you do have to have some scholarly interests to get the most out of it. They also put out books for free on the sidewalk now and then, although these are even more obscure than the ones inside. more

The original great bookstore! 8/5/2005

What I love most about this place is the HUGE number of out-of-print and old books available. Easy to lose track of time as you peruse the many shelves and tables crammed with books. It's a bit dim and a little dingy--unlike the hyper bright Borders or Barnes & Noble chain feel, this is for die hard book aficionados who are there for the books, not the extra tall mocha frappacino. This is a classic bookstore--no café with sandwiches, but I don't think the owner would object if you wandered in with your own and perched on a footstool for a while. Watch your wallet though--you almost always leave with more than you expected! more
