Great place to get cute clothes and a smile 8/20/2009

I love the way the lady who manages the place, flits around finding dresses for me. I have several cute dresses from them. The employees forget to take sensors off, so check for them before leaving. I like the staff but it has gotten smaller over the past year. I am asked to leave my drink on the counter but not my bag. I don't mind a bit. I would spill it anyway. I have come to this place for years and will continue to bring friends and myself to shop. If you are looking for cute clothes and cute shoes, this is the place. The clothes are too small sometimes but I usually find something with the lady's help. Pros: helpful staff Cons: sizes too small sometimes more

WASTE OF TIME! 5/20/2009

There's this crazy old lady who bustles around the place acting like the owner when in fact she's not. She used to run one of the stores in Seattle till they got sick of her, so they sent her down here so they didn't have to deal with her. Here's how I break down the Powder Room: 1. Dogs: welcome. Children: hell no. I wouldn't bring my kids there, the owner is scary and hates children. She'll follow you around to make sure your kids don't stick there fingers on anything. 2. Don't even think about bringing something to drink in. She will ask you to leave, I'm not even joking. 3. Don't even start looking at shoes. They are way overpriced, she brings the same shoes out every year. Plus the employees make commission of the shoes so they will tell you anything looks good. 4. At least 1/3 of the merchandise can be found at Forever 21. The other 2/3 can be bought across the street at Three Monkeys for a much cheaper price. 5. The clothes are so cheap they have to alter them regularly. I've seen a girl sewing back on buttons or fixing rips on many items, not just clearance items but brand new stuff right out of the box. 6. If you try something on, make sure you shut the door on your way out! It's hard to forget, the old lady details out the instructions to you in such a way that a 3 year old could do it. If one of her employees lets you in she's probably lurking around the corner making sure they do it right, and if she doesn't you have to awkwardly sit there while she does it again for you just to make sure. Basically, don't waste your time. Go to Three Monkeys across the street if you must. The old lady is awful, she has absolutely no respect for her customers and could care less if you shopped at "her" store. Pros: It's on 23rd, so for non-Portlanders it's "Portland." Cons: The old hag who works there. more

Bad Hold System 5/17/2009

I went to buy a dress from the powder room yesterday. The only woman working there was sitting outside the WHOLE time, talking on her cell phone. When she finally came back, I put the dress I wanted on hold for a day, because I had to come back with more money. After coming back 45 minutes later, I asked for the dress and the lady, embarrassed, said she put it "in the back". I thought she meant she was keeping it in the back of the store, but then she went and grabbed it off the shelf I found it on, with no marking that was on hold. Pros: Cute clothing Cons: Rude employees who aren't helpful. more

Rude Employee 11/24/2008

I had the same weird experience at this store today. This afternoon on my day off i went shopping on NW 23rd. I had a coffee in my hand and walked down the steps. A woman, who I assume was the owner ,was outside getting UPS packages and came running frantically into the store and didnt even greet me. She damnded that i put my coffee "right here" as she slammed her hand down on the glass. As i moved my coffee towards the glass to set it down she repeated herself again demanding "right here" slamming her fighers down on the glass. It was really rude and akward so i just walked out. I shopped at other stores on 23rd that morning and no one said a thing to me about my coffee. I wouldnt have minded at all if she had just asked me nicely in a friendly manner. Terrible experience and i wont be back. more

Worst customer service ever!!! 9/25/2008

My girlfriends and I went to The Powder Room and experienced the worst customer service. The lady was rude and made us feel very uncomfortable. After picking up a top off one of the racks and putting it back in its original place, she made a point to fix the direction of the hanger while giving a dirty look. As we were checking out my girlfriend was looking at jewelry that was set in front of the cash register and the lady grabbed her from the shoulders and pushed her out of the way because she couldn't get behind the counter. She continued to complain to our other friend who was making a purchase, about how she can't stand when people are standing in front of the register. A simple excuse me would have been sufficient. Do not shop at this store. Pros: None Cons: Absolute worst service more

Worst customer service with overpriced clothes 6/17/2008

The owner of this store is a rude, cranky owner who has the worst customer service skills. I guess she doesn't mind shutting out customers because she is rude to almost anyone who might upset her off in some way (she gets upset easily). If it comes to touching a mannequin just to check a price tag of one of her crappy cheap clothes, or she accuses you of soliciting, she will be as rude as possible to you. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE! Pros: nothing Cons: everything more

A Perfect Fit to any Wardrobe 1/25/2005

It is a perfect place for anything from sexy to chic and the staff there is always friendly and helpful. So if youre on a budget but dont want to look that way visit The Powder Room. Pros: Price, Staff, Selection more

A Shop for Shoppers 8/23/2002

Every time i walk down 21st i am drawn into The Powder Room. The cloths are stylish and not over priced. The people are friendly and the sale rack is always full of things you don't need but REALLY want! Pros: Great Selection, Atmosphere, Unique Trendy things Cons: $$ a bit more

Editorial

  • In Short
A deliciously pink time warp featuring imitation designer trends, feather boas and glitzy shoes, this place usually has prices so low that it's ok to wear that new leopard-print halter only once before stashing it deep in the closet. The store seamlessly mixes the wild with the sublime, the quirky with the classic. Fishnets and faux-fur purses fit perfectly with black vinyl jackets and dark denim jeans.
