Traced my puppy to Missouri home to a puppy mill was told a toy poodle end up a mini in saying that lived for 16 years I would recommend a breeder not knowledgeable very pricey and endorse mills and money. more

Purchased two Westiies 10/13/2013

I purchased two westies from here the first one died of a brain tumor at 10 years old and the second dies of Blatter cancer and kidney damage at age 14 Both had allergies from the start and I would not purchase another puppy from any retail store you never know how these poor little puppies were raised Go direct to a breeder so you can see for yourself before you buy more

DO NOT BUY A PUPPY FROM THEM!!! 2/1/2012

My family purchased 2 puppies from them. Both became very sick after a year old and needed expensive surgeries. After that, they were on constant medication and a special diet to treat the diseases for life! Very expensive; over $50 per week. They purchase the dogs from backyard breeders and puppy mills!!! Save your family the heartache and purchase from a reputable breeder or go to the shelter. more

puppy buyers beware 1/28/2012

in 2004 we purchased a min pin from Potomac Kennels(big mistake) He was so sick from the start, he was diagnosed with hip displacia at the age of one had to be operated on just to name a few of the issued he had. We called pk and they offered to replace him but we did not want another sick dog.fast forward 8 years we had to put him down the surgery was unsuccessfull he was in constant pain could not walk on his hind leg. We were told by 7 vets for the past 5 years that there was nothing else they could for him. We are devasted because we tried everything to ease his pain and suffering but nothing helped. Please please save yourself from future pain and suffering and dont purchase a puppy from pk they are dishonest people who do not care about selling healthy puppies only about profits. more

happy puppy customer 12/8/2011

I have purchased 5 puppies from Potomac Kennels over the past 20 years. Every time I go in to visit, the staff is friendly and when I play with the puppies they seem happy and well cared for. I have recommended them several times to friends, who have had similar experiences to mine. more

Long term health problems- they care about money not pets 9/9/2011

We bought two schnauzers a long time ago. One died in weeks from Parvo. They replaced the dog that died. Of the two, they are sweet dogs, but one went blind from a genetic degenerative disease. The other one has scores of health problems and has for her entire life. I will never support this kennel with my business again. more

Poorly maintained place 3/21/2011

Good: Nothing. Bad: The place stinks. The sales associate was rude. The crates were dirty, and too small for some dogs. Improvements: The only improvement would be to close down that place.. Other: They are just full of crap. They tell you that they sell family pets quality. What doesn it mean exactly? They buy those puppies from puppy mills. For the large breeds, the parents have not been OFA certified for their hips. The only thing which is show quality is the PRICE. People do your homework and either adopt a shelter dog or check the breeders around you, do not buy from this place.. more

Do NOT be fooled by the large "Display Kennels" 3/14/2011

Even if you pay for your large dog to be put in the large display kennels that you see when you walk through Potomac Kennels, they will shove your dog into the smallest ones possible behind the closed doors. Also you think they walk your dog 3 times a day? Twice at best, but that is just a 3 second walk in the parking lot, after your dog has deficated and vomited all throughout it's tiny prison cell. Don't believe me? Get a job there see for yourself. I don't understand how this place is still open. more

A Wonderful Kennel 2/11/2011

My golden lab purchased from Potomac Kennels is the best dog I have ever owned. He's beautiful, healthy and smart. I board him at PK whenever I travel and am always impressed with the care and attention he gets. But I'm most impressed with the people who work there. They obviously are animal lovers, kind and considerate. I have recommended them to others and always get thanked for my recommendation. more

GO ELSEWHERE FOR PET ADOPTION 1/12/2011

I adopted an 8 week old sheltie from Potomac Kennels in 2007. He had kennel cough when I selected him for adoption and asked Potomac Kennels to take care of the problem and I would pay the rest of my deposit in 5 days when I returned from a trip and picked him up. It was agreed that he would be treated for his illness as well. I picked him up on a Sunday morning and it was obvious his illness had gotten worse. He was sooooo sleepy and sick. Yellow mucus was coming out his eyes and nose when he breathed and sneezed. What was I to do? So I knew I had to save this little guy. Potomac Kennels makes you sign a contract that you take him to a vet on their list. However it was over Memorial Day Weekend and nobody was open. This dog needed to be seen by a Vet as soon as possible. I took him to a Vet and his kennel cough had gone into Pneumonia. He was the sickest 3lb. puppy I had ever seen. He was hooked up to IVs, given meds, and watched for 24 hours. The next day when I picked him up he was alittle better but needed some TLC. I didn't sleep the next 2 days because of the constant care he needed with fluids and medicine. The bill for the vet ended up being an additional $600.00. Not to mention the dog adoption bill from Potomac Kennels was $800.00. Yes I would do this for him again but I want to hold Potomac Kennels responsible for a dog getting this sick. The dog had been in the kennel cages for 4 weeks and they knew when I selected him that he was sick. They did nothing about it like they promised. I find this place to be disgraceful and would NEVER recommend this kennel to anyone. How dare you treat animals this way. I could run a kennel better than this and I'm not even in the business. more

My baby lived 14 1/2 years. 6/24/2010

Purchased my Shitz Tzu in Dec 1993, lost him in March 2008. He was healthy, happy, well behaved all his life. Developed cataracts and cancer in the later years but eye problems are part of a Shitz Tzu makeup. Now I would not buy from anyone other than a breeder whom I can visit and see the puppy being raised. But did have good luck with the our baby purchased here. We were definitely not knowledgeable about how to purchase a dog but fell in love with him at first sight. more

Sick Puppy, Still Has Problems 5/26/2010

I bought my Daschund puppy there in 2001 and had to return a week later because he was so sick with kennel cough. It was heartbreaking. A few years later he has severe medical problems. I wouldn't trust this establishment. more

A concerned Pet Owner 12/26/2009

First impression when i walked in was wow what a stench. that should not be the case. My wonderful GSD(Female) has been diagnosed with cancer, unfortunetly not too much too live. As i researched to find another companion for myself and my other GSD(Male) i came across PK. Firs the place is a dump, its not clean, it smells worse than a football locker room on a hot summer day. The pups were laying in there own feces, and the 2 mini-doberman-pinchers i asked to see where the female was in good health with danderuf, and the male with excessive dandruf, coughing, sneezing, and excessive tearing. Not to mention that he really wasnt in the mood to play with his sister which is what i was told. Anyhow i would hav loved to rescue them both, but they wanted 900 a pup, thats outrageous, plus in there condition, no way. I love my 2 GSD to death, they boh came from reputable breeders whom i have researched extensively. I am not the one to tell them how to run there business however i would never buy a pup from them, i hope they clean up there act or get out of the animal business completely. just my 2 cents more

Questionable Puppy Mill 11/9/2009

I recently purchased a puppy (poochon) from Potomac Kennels. I took her to their recommended vet and she was diagnosed with a really bad case of kennel cough. I had a 2nd visit and they still kept he ron antibiotics because her blood count was so bad. I then took her to my vet and she was diagnosed with an intestinal parasite. If she was taken care of has a puppy I don't see where she could have been so sick at 11 weeks. I asked Potomac Kennels and they said theyonly deal with reputable breeders they have been dealing with for years, somehow I suspect that is not true. I paid a lot of money for my puppy, which isn't even the issue, but I am very upset that she posisbly wasn't taken care of properly. She was very unhealthy, has a really bad overbite, but she is adorable and I love her and will care for her. She is lucky to have found a good home. I wouldn't recommend Potomac Kennels. more

Stay Away 9/20/2009

I would rate this zero stars, but that wasn't an option. Stay away! We bought a puppy from Potomac Kennels. We had been frequent visitors and were under the impression that they only brought in puppies from the highest quality breeders and purebred. The puppy was top dollar, more than the going rate of breaders who offered dogs of show quality and you could visit their homes and see where the puppies were raised. When we took the puppy to the vet, we first learned she was not a purebred, but a mix. She also was sick, intestine and urinary infections so far. More tests are being run. Based upon the AKC papers provided by Potomac Kennels, we researched on the internet the breeder. It was so upsetting. A puppy farm. Hundreds of dogs kept in kennels outside even below 30 degrees farrenheit. We further found multiple violations identified in UDC inspections, recent and dating back 4 years. Among the violations, small kennels over packed with dogs, dirty food, dogs kept outside in the cold in dirt ditches so the kennels were partially underground, medications were expired and the breeder was using a large syringe to administer boosters to multiple dogs without changing or sanitizing needles. Many other heartrbreaking violations detailed. You would think Potomac Kennels would do some due diligence on their suppliers. Despite the substantial price we paid, we definitely "rescued" this animal. Our children have bonded so insisting on a refund is difficult, and in any event Potomac Kennels refused to accept obvious evidence of extreme negligence on their part. more

NO WAY! 1/7/2009

We bought our Maltese in Dec 2008, and she came to us very sick (pneumonia and hypoglycemic). PK was obligated to pay all medical expenses, which they are still doing, but they have never once contacted us to see how she is doing through all this. We've spent every day since her arrival having to deal with her medical needs. Today, though, was a shocker. We received her legal pedigree which clearly shows an insane lineage of inbreeding all the way back to her great-grandparents. In fact, her mother and paternal grandmother are SISTERS, making her mother the AUNT of her father AND the two parents are also COUSINS! BEWARE Potomac Kennels at all cost. This business is not practicing a safe or healthy operation. more

They sell sick puppies 12/27/2008

I bought a yellow lab from them 5 years ago. The puppy was in perfect health until $3,000 and a year later we find out she has IBD. Now it costs us over $100 a month for her medicine and special diet. Also, 2 other friends of ours bought dogs from there and they both have life long illnesses. Buyer beware! more

Don't do it! 11/21/2008

I was young and silly and decided to purchase a puppy. Months later I found out he had hip dysplasia and was not X-rayed like the store associate said he was. Now I have hundreds of dollars in vet bills and a coupon for a free dog that I will NEVER use with them. I asked them if they would possibly donate that amount to the pound but they refused. My dog is wonderful but I would hate to see other people go through the same thing we did! Don't do it! more

Purchased from 2x in 5 years. 2/12/2008

And had a great experience both times. I got 2 miniature pinchers, both with papers, every healthy and happy and well treated by the staff. Although I don't support puppy mills at all , and hated Just Puppies and places like that, this place was totally different and backed up their purebreed status. Would buy from again. more
