dermatologist recommended me 3/2/2008

My dermatologist actually suggested I go Portofino for my psoriasis. He said they have been trusted in the city for over 20 years. This location was closest to work. The UVB rays are what is best for the condition so I switch between their stand-up machine and "bullet" bed. In one month I've seen a drastic difference--getting this under control has honestly made life easier. The tan is nice too. Ask for their special package for medium pressure machines. Pros: helps clear up skin more

quick, clean, friendly 3/2/2008

I've been going about once a week to keep up my tan from Mexico. The staff is always friendly, the beds are always clean and as long as I'm on time for my appointment-I never have to wait. It's been over a month since I was in Acapulco and I still look fresh from the beach--just no burn. Just be ready for some funny names of the machines--I tan in the "MATRIX!!" haha Pros: good service-clean place Cons: seems pricey for one session more

Ok ok...yes, my friends and I are Portofino lovers. On our lunch break we hurry over for a quick tan and i must say that I am the tannest of them all. NO QUESTION!!! Our "club" has been dieting and motivating eachother since January and we just incorporated a new way to treat ourselves--i mean being tan does make us look SKINNY!! love love love portofino (did i mention that i'm the tannest??) Portofino is the proud sponser of the Bloomingdale's lunch club!!!!! We lov tanning here and reading the trendy magazines in the lobby. A great midtown spot - I just can't wait till the weather warms up and we Bloomie's girls can walk to our TANNER without our coats on! (PS : To all Bloomie girls - I will win the tan-a-thon!!!!) Bloomingdale's Loves Portofino!!! 3/1/2008

Writing on behalf of my Bloomie's girls!!! We love the new Portofino on 57th Street! Recommend it to all for a great lunch date (when you're dieting and don't really want to "lunch"). The girls and I have been instead hitting up Portofino Tanning Salon. We're running a little game to try all the beds. No one has won yet, they have a bunch to choose from. The staff at Portofino is even in on it now. They see us coming and laugh. Highly recommend Portofino for a fun 20 minute stop in midtown. more

Affordable Airbrush 3/1/2008

I don't really know how much to expect to pay for an airbrush, but according to friends it can get really pricey. I was expecting maybe $75 ... or even $100. Still not even sure if I WANTED one, I called a few places to get the scoop. NO ONE would tell me how much they charge. I'm serious. They "don't quote prices" over the phone. Beach bum wouldn't "share pricing". That new place Color tanning told me I'd have to come on over (are they kidding?) to see. Luckily I called Portofino where someone actually told me that they charge $55 for an airbrush single session. That seemed pretty do-able, so I went and got one. No big deal, I guess. I am really tan.... people commented that it looks good, and I'm kinda excited to have this as an option for the summer. Nice place. Pros: Good airbrush, upfront about prices more

Good Salon, but between 5TH AND 6TH 2/29/2008

Citysearch has this wrong! The address is right but the cross streets are wrong! This place is between 5TH AND 6TH!!!! Luckily I printed this page out so I could call when I was lost in no man's land between madison and park. Once I actually got to Portofino, it was a breeze. They have a lot of different beds to choose from and a pretty neat spot in the city. The view is cool - worth going up to the fourth floor for. Just write down the address when you go. Portofino is exactly what I pictured a New York tanning salon to be - trendy, kinda hush hush, and the best and newest quality in machines. No burning!!! 2/29/2008

I went to a tanning salon and I DIDN'T BURN!!!!! Hats off to Portofino - they tanned my Irish skin! Didn't think it could be done, and with 4 sessions (ok.... it took me 4) I've finally got some color on me that isn't self tanner or freckles that have grown together. I used a machine that only gives me A rays - the B (B for burn!) rays weren't in the machine at all. It was a stand up machine, called Matrix (Matricks?) Only thing is, I wish I had bought the package to save a little money. Maybe next time I bronze up this body of mine! Pros: They make pale people tan. I swear. I am one. Clean Salon! 2/29/2008

Went to Portofino to see what all the hype was about - and while it may be about the tan, I'm raving about the salon itself! It was just so REFRESHING to go to a tanning salon where I trusted the cleanliness of the machines. They even have Purell on the desk :) I'm a neat freak and obviously, so is the guy running Portofino. Even the customers look nice and neat :) You can use the provided plastic eyewear or ask for the disposable eye stickers - it was nice to have the option. My tan was great, the price was reasonable, but the reason I will go back is the safe and appealing environment. Pros: Eyewear provided, unlimited towels, neat environment more

Appointments honored! 2/29/2008

I've actually been a client of Portofino for years (another location) and just came by to see how the newest one was looking. I made an appointment for after work, walked through the door, and got the VIP treatment! My bed was ready, the girl at the desk knew my name and was all ready to ring me up when I got there. She walked me to my machine and showed me how to use it. I had 9 minutes to get undressed and get ready, did my session, wasn't rushed out of my room, and went on my way! The whole process took maybe 25 minutes, most of which was time I spent relaxing in peace and quiet. I respect a company who takes appointments and keeps them - so glad Portofino is continuing this courtesy. Pros: Appointments available more

OBSESSED w/ airbrush tan 2/28/2008

i tried their airbrush and got exactly what i wanted- a natural looking tan without being in the sun. it was applied really evenly and took about a half hour. the tan lasted about a week and looked good the whole time. ask for valeria. Pros: airbrush more

So imagine if one day, you woke up and you were laying on the most comfortable bed of clouds you could imagine, surrounded by hoards of the most attractive people you had ever seen who were begging to feed you the best kinds of your favorite foods. Yeah, it's that good. Portofino has somehow managed to find a collection of the nicest and funniest people in town to help you out, and has an array of the newest, coolest tanning beds that are guaranteed to give you a stunning bronze immediately. The staff at Portofino is highly informed on what the best means are for the best results, and the environment couldn't be more conducive for relaxation. The Best Tan in the City! 2/27/2008

The Portofino Tanning Salon is amazing for so many reasons: (1) The location is perfect, very central to everything (2) Every staff member is friendly, helpful, sweet, and accommodating (3) The tanning beds are comfortable, new, large, and there are tons of different options depending on what I want, be it a "beach tan" lying down, or an intense tan standing up (4) Everything is always clean, including the complimentary goggles and towel that come with each tan (5) The prices are affordable, and there is an optional bed that uses less points. The Portofino Experience is, in every way, outstanding! Thank you for opening up in the City! more

Clean tanning salon! Good tan too! 2/22/2008

Great tan! I'm really happy with the color I got from this tanning salon. I went twice this week, used the same bed first for 12 minutes and then for the full 15. I am about as dark as I get :) The thing I liked best about Portofino was how clean it was. I felt like I was on a brand new machine, probably was because this Portofino is brand new. The towels are crisp and they provide eyewear. Cool place and really enjoyed the atmosphere! Pros: New Spot! Gread results more

Best tan in NYC 2/20/2008

Every time that I move in the city, I have to find a new tanning salon--now I am in midtown and Portofino is my new staple! I LOVE it there. The staff is fun, the atmosphere is relaxed and I always get an amazing tan. The packages there seem equal to if not cheaper than my previous salons, and the quality is far better. I definitely recommend their "Mastersun" bed. It's a 15 minute bed that gets me sooo dark! Just be careful not to go to the old one on 58th St... I made that mistake my first time and realized that one closed!! oops. Pros: Mastersun, friendly staff more

Portofino Staff Rocks! 2/18/2008

I couldn't agree more with the last review. One of my favorite parts of going to Portofino is for the nice, friendly, attractive female staff behind the desk. The one with the red hair especially...I think she is the manager. At my old tanning place the people were always on their cell phones or talking to another staff member instead of helping customers. The staff at Portofino are professional and they couldn't be more outgoing and helpful to make customers feel at right at home. Bottom line: Portofino has a great staff and their beds are the best in NYC. I highly recommend. Pros: Attractive and friendly female staff Cons: Location tough to find 1st time...but call the Portofino staff up and they'll help you out! more

Gotta love the Portofino ladies 2/17/2008

Ok, some other females may be turned off by the cute female staff, but I am one guy who has no problem with the smiley girls behind the desk. I don't like to tell people that I tan, but I figure this is anonymous and I should stick up for the the girls that make Portofino the best tanning salon in town. Not only are the girls cool, the machines give me a great natural tan and I don't ever look like a lobster when I go back to work the next day. I'd send all my friends (if I ever admitted that my skin color was from tanning and not my Italian roots). Pros: good tan, good staff Cons: have to take an elevator to get to it more

Great feel but so so female staff! 2/15/2008

The salon really is one of the best that New York has to offer. Being from the west coast, this salon has a very mellow vibe and a trendy feel to it. the only thing about the salon I will say, especially at 57th st and the one around 74th or 75th st is that some of the staff seem to be a little immature and tend to talk on the phone more than focus on their clientele. the staff seems to be a little superficial and one with reddish hair seems more into herself than her job, but other than that, great pick Pros: great beds, great ambiance, Cons: female staff really kills the vibe! more

Portofino native. Done a little exploring and none compare. Quality tans for those who know the difference between a tan and a burn. Very comfortable escape from the city. Great New Location! 2/15/2008

I previously tanned at Portofino's 58th & Madison location and was dissapointed when I learned that it had relocated until I walked into the new location on 57th st. This place is great! The new location has a great waiting area and all the rooms and beds are brand new. The staff goes out of their way to make you feel comfortable. I've never seen equipment like this at any other salon in NYC. It is simply superior. I highly recommend this location. Pros: Everything is Brand New! Cons: A little tricky to find, but well worth it. more
