Christmas fun 12/9/2006

Last night our family attended the Portland Revels for the first time. ""Fun"" is the word that kept coming to my mind. The acrobats and the Morris dancers were outstanding, and John Vergin as the narrator/King Arthur showed incredible talent whether he was speaking, singing, or playing the harp. The costumes were excellent, too--very beautiful. The performance included medieval songs sung in French, juggling, gymnastics, loads of humor, puppet shows, and an accurate recounting of the tale of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. It blended the artistry of brass and archaic instruments (such as a hurdy-gurdy and a large wood recorder) with modern-day camp (fans of ""Monty Python and the Holy Grail"" could not fail to recognize the scene in which a cow is thrown over the battlements of a castle). Audience participation is a hallmark of the Revels, and it was fun to sing along to various songs and carols, even though some were in French and Latin (we were coached beforehand so it was an entertaining novelty rather than merely baffling). This is great fun for anyone with even a slight interest in things medieval. Pros: Fun holiday experience Cons: Must pay for parking more
