Best

Highly recommended. A variety of choices on their menu and the prices are reasonable. I love this place, it's in my neighborhood, so now I don't need to drive to San Francisco...

OK food at OK price 12/29/2005

I think the title explains it all. The food wasn't exceptionally good nor was it bad. Its just a restaurant where you don't want to cook one day and just go out to eat. But, I would say their porridge is very good because its made just right. The noodle soups arent good. They have no taste to it so if you go, you should order some porridge or some roasted food. I dont really like the service. They take awhile and sometimes they have this tired look and service. Its like they dont try to make u feel comfortable eating her. more

Excellent Value 9/9/2005

I ordered the Chef Special Pan Fried Noodles for around $7.50. They were absolutely delicious! A hot steaming plate full of BBQ pork, lean strips of beef, and some other meats I couldn't identify. The pan fried noodles were cooked just right. They were stiff enough to taste "cool", yet soft enough so I didn't have to break out a sawzall to chew on it. Off to the side were some carrots, peas, and mixed greens. Timeliness: We came around lunch time and waited about 15-20 minutes, not too bad. Cons: they don't take credit cards! Come on Porridge King! It's 2005, even McDonald's takes ATMs! I would definitely recommend this place to a friend. I give it 5 stars because of it's awesome food and excellent value. Lots of restaurants will charge extra to have the noodles pan fried. Unfortunately I can't say much about the other foods because I didn't try them (not a fan of jook ironically, maybe cause my mom makes it all the time), but the pan fried noodles were excellent! more

Good food, long wait 8/9/2005

The food is good but the wait for the food to get to your table will take longer than other restaurants. There is always tables open. Out of all the times I've been here, I never had to wait for a table. Parking was very easy. There were a lot of spaces open. Not a bad place overall. more

Price is Right 8/5/2005

Porridge King is one of those odd suburban restaurants that could only happen in The Bay Area. Sure, there's real Chinese food in the city, but Porridge King serves it up on a clean table and lickety-split. The menu is large, the ingredients are fresh, and the prices are right. Anyone looking for their Hong Kong Chinese food fix will find what they want here: fried noodles, wonton soup, and the speciality of the house -- congee, or Chinese rice porridge. What you won't find here is ambience, neither upscale or slumming. It's just plain good food, located in a suburban strip mall. more

Decent food, decent prices, but... 7/11/2005

Went there for dinner the other day. Porridge King's specialty is definitely NOT porridge (in my opinion). I found it be lacking in texture and flavor. Not many porridge restaurants around be will definitely not go back just for the porridge. Their other dishes were decent. The fried rice was flavorful and the chow fun noodles was good. Albeit, a little pricey for chinese food. They have a BBQ take out section also. Seating was quick as there seems to be a high turnover. Noisy atmosphere, and the wait staff was a bit abrupt. Will think twice about trying it again. more
