Excellent food and service! 3/17/2012

My husband and I have eaten at Pompeii three times and have been consistently happy with the service, quality of food and atmosphere. Our waitress has been very friendly and professional and quick to take our orders and bring out our food. The portions are very generous and the pasta has been consistently cooked to perfection! We will definitely be making a trip back to eat here soon! more

Terrible Service! 1/29/2012

First time here. The food is NOT that great. You get your salad in less than two minutes which leads me to believe that all their food is pre-done. I don't see why it's so difficult for someone to cut FRESH lettuce and make their dressing. I ordered the lasagna and it was cold and had to get it re-heated. As typical places like this do, I watched as our waiter gave it to the chef, simply put it in the oven, and I got it a few minutes later. My wife ordered some kind of chicken dish with vegetables but there was so much butter that it couldn't be eaten. The service was the worst part. When we were there, it was a Friday afternoon and there weren't that many people in there at all. My waiter, some tall guy with unprofessional hair, was so busy talking with the girl worker up front that I hardly got any service. I had to keep waiving him down just so I could ask for more cheese and bread and as soon as he dropped it off there he went back to talk to the girl up front again. If you are looking for fresh and good Italian food, then this is NOT the place to go to. Their prices are ridiculous for items that are pre-cooked. more

Simply Amazing 6/24/2011

So I've been coming to this place for years now, and it's a little different each time. Their Chicken Piccata is awesome, and many other plates they have. Some of their selections are really pricy, and I even tried the most expensive thing, the lamb shank and I just wasn't impressed. The sauce they put on the lamb shank was disgusting. Service is only good when you have the right person. I had been going for years, then a few months ago I got a guy named Brian or Bryan, whatever it's spelled. This guy was by far the fastest server I've ever had, and you can even watch him and you'll see why. I ask for him every time and I recommend him to anyone who goes. I told him about the sauce for the labm shank, and he actually agreed with me. He suggested that I try the rack of lamb because it had a sweet marsala sauce on it. After the first bite, I was so impressed that such a sweet sauce could compliment the meat so well. There have been a few times where when I order the salmon, it's either too undercooked or just doesn't taste right. But their desserts are magnificent. In the end, I give this place a high rating. It's not very common that you see a place that can take a bunch of groups of people, they even have their own private room in the back for parties of what I was told, can be 100 or more! more

Stay Away 4/10/2011

I wasn't expecting to have a pizza made chicago style at a Italian restaurant....It also tasted just like pizza huts recipe deep dish pizza. Yuck. The salad had no taste as well. more

Way too pricey for mostly pasta 10/10/2010

The best part was the bread and olive oil. The food is WAY overpriced and not very impressive at all. I paid $26.00 for a veal shank and received a lot of pasta and a huge fatty bone with very little meat on it that was tender but very bland. Very disappointing. My son also ordered a plate with sun-dried tomatoes and was also disappointed at the amount of pasta he received for 13.00. I can think of other Italian restaurants to go to than to go back here. The food is definitely not worth the price you pay. more

WELL DONE 11/6/2009

I have fequented Pompeii many times and every time I leave happier than I was when I came in. The bottomless bread and Olive Oil with Garlic is so tasty. I would be happy with just the bread and a cup of coffee. My favorite appetizers are Pompeii salad and stuffed mushrooms. The chicken cannelloni, chicken masala, Shrimp Pompeii, and sausage cacciatore are my top picks for entrees. If you are CRAVING really GREAT classic Italian food then I suggest Pompeii. Pros: VERY WELL DONE CLASSIC ITALIAN Cons: Off the beaten path, but worth the drive! more

Best Italian in town. 7/7/2008

The building is unique and intricate in it's design. The food was definitely the best Italian I've ever eaten. We went through 4 loaves of the free bread alone! Everyone at the table was very impressed with their meals.\r \r There was great music playing and just enough empty tables to not feel too crowded. The server was knowledgeable, thoughtful and prompt.\r \r The wait for food is a little long, and the pricing a little steep but, it is well worth it. I'd recommend this place to any of my friends. Pros: Atmosphere, taste. Cons: Price, wait. more

""Cheezy"" 6/15/2008

When you first walk in you think that it is going to be a great experience. However, First glance at the wine menu and it is weak. I ask the waiter for great recommendation for a great Cab and Kendell Jackson was the top choice . Any wine menu that has Reunitti has Cheap written all over it. There was live music on an electric grand piano which got better when the electric drum beat was heard during ""strangers in the night"". The best was when the entire wait staff sang happy birthday (Applebees style) to the top of their lungs while clapping. I was so upset because I couldn't hear ""Girl from Ipenema"" on the electric grand piano.\r I will say the people are friendly...IT IS JUST A CHEEZZEEY PLACE! more

Would not return 2/23/2008

The food is like something you would make at home (your first attempt at Italian). The chicken I ordered was $12.00 and was basically four small medallions. It probably cost about $3.00 in the store. My husband had the chicken parmesean and the sauce tasted like lemon juice. The waitress rushed us, I felt like I was in a diner. I have been here before and thought it was good enough to return, but I will not be going back. more

Lacks quality & overpriced 10/5/2007

The ambience suggests that you are going to have a great dining experience, but once the food comes out disappointment sets in. The pasta sauce appears to have been made from a powder mix. The bread dipping oil lacked flavor, as did my husband's pasta dish. I'd say that this place is about on the same scale as Olive Garden - not the freshest ingredients or the best taste. Not horrible, but for the prices they charge (approx. $15 a plate), I was expecting something a lot better. Also, the meatless pasta dishes are way overpriced, about $12 for plain pesto linguini. You can get better quality food for about the same price or less at Trilogy or a number of other Italian restaurants in town. I agree with the reviewer that commented that this place ""is aspiring to be like Macaroni Grill."" However, it fails. Pros: clean, comfortable Cons: overpriced, lacks quality more

LOVE IT 5/11/2007

I go to Pompeii, among other Italian restaurants around town, and I have to say that this place is a gem. The food is always fantastic, and the price is almost laughable...food this great would cost you an arm and a leg at Paesano's or Aldo's, which Im starting to think are a bit overrated compared to here. My wife and I can order wine, and a 3-course meal and the check will still be under $50\r On top of that, I always have to take home leftover....you can never finish their huge portions of food.\r I can go on and on about how beautiful the place is, too.\r \r pros: incredible food, great prices.\r cons: fair-great service, depending on who your server is. When there's a big crowd on Fridays and Saturdays, it can be pretty loud. more

The Worst Service In San Antonio 5/17/2006

When my friend and I first got to the restraunt, we were greeted very promptyl. We then sat down and were asked what we wanted to drink, WE WAITED 15 minutes before we recieved our drinks. We had our bread before anything. Then our food came 20 minutes later. People who sat down 10 minutes after we did recieved their salads and drink and food LONG before we did. Overall I am very disapointed with this restaurant, for $11 I got the worst Service in the whole City of San Antonio. Next time I will definatley not choose to go here when I am craving ITALIAN! Pros: suroundings, lasagna was good!! Cons: bad service, no ranch dressing, tables are to close more

Don't miss it 4/10/2006

Not impressed 3/4/2006

My impression is that Pompeii aspires to be like Macaroni Grill, but can't measure up. I will say that the service was pretty good; our waitress filled the bread more than once and was prompt in bringing our food. The bread was very yummy, but the rest of the food made the experience unenjoyable overall. The salad dressing had a strange flavor I couldn't identify. I swear the manicotti (which i normally love) came out of a can - the sauce and filling were totally flavorless and the noodles were very overcooked. It reminded me of what my college dorm used to serve. My husband's alfredo sauce was runny, like. At least the food was pretty cheap, but still I came away feeling overcharged. Pros: Decent service Cons: Poor quality food more

Good waiter 11/15/2005

My husband and I went at end of October and found the food to be wonderful. The bread was crusty on outside and soft on inside, nice and hot. DELISH!!! We had the most wonderful, pleasant waiter. His name was Floyd. I will definitely ask for him next time. He was always there to fill our drinks or bring more bread. Very amusing, also. We really enjoyed our time there. Next time we will go a little later in evening so we can enjoy the live music/singing that starts at 7:00 Pros: food quality, ambience more

Excellent Italian American 3/4/2004

This is a good American Italian restaurant. I had a dish with artichokes and chicken with mushrooms in a wine sauce. It was wonderful, and the portion was enough to easily satisfy two hungery people, and I'm a fat girl...LOL! It came with a side of pasta with garlic herb butter on it. It was so good I could have just ordered it to eat and nothing else. The tiramisu was ok. Not the best, but definately not the worst. The waitress wasn't very attentive, but still tip worthy. I would go back next time I have about $25 to spend on one dinner, and I would definately recommend this place to anyone. Pros: wonderful food, good atmosphere Cons: , service needs tune-up more
