Best

We're neighbors, love this place. Great happy hour specials, sick Saturday night electronic dance party.

Worst

Okay, so the first few times I went to Pianos were weeknights, and I had a great time. Good crowd, busy but not packed, and great atmosphere. Then I stopped by on a Saturday and...

kill the sound guy 3/10/2003

went to see a favorite band play the other night. the scene is ridiculous...like something out of ""when models go wild."" a scad of self-conscious, insecure models attempting to be ""hipsters."" the band was good (they always are), but what was up with the sound? from the second song in their set til the end, the volume kept getting louder and louder. For a relatively ambient, mellow band, the head banging volume level sucked. thanks, but no thanks. small, hot, smoky, packed with wannabes....this venue blows. Cons: small, hot, a "scene" more

good fun night 3/6/2003

Mixed Reviews... 2/28/2003

Okay, so the first few times I went to Pianos were weeknights, and I had a great time. Good crowd, busy but not packed, and great atmosphere. Then I stopped by on a Saturday and had the complete opposite experience. BAD service too. I still like the space, but I'd stay away on the weekends. Pros: weeknights Cons: weekends more

A great time! 2/27/2003

It's a very real bar- a refreshing twist to the usually annoying ""hip scene"". Already looking forward to going back! more

don't believe the hype 2/26/2003

Fisrt off the sound in the live room sucks! The traffic flow of the main room is terrible when it gets crowded and the service at the door and the bar is marginal at best. I believe the entire staff is sharing a brain because you get different answers to the same question. There are better places to go in this town. Pros: good music Cons: crowded more

Wanna Be... 2/11/2003

I thought this place was cool b/c i heard it was...but please it's just another trendy wanna be..hipster joint. And the music......come on they don't play anything tune from this planet....what happened to my rock-n-roll neighoborhood...suckers........ Pros: location Cons: door dude, music, decor more

hipsters should know better 2/8/2003

My first few experiences at Pianos were cool. It is a good space and has managed to attract a great crowd. But in the few months they have been open, I have gone from one bad situation to the next. They are not keeping on listing their shows, the staff is unbelievably rude, and they don't seem to understand how to work a door properly. Further, I heard the door guy saying to they were only allowing females in -- to two guys who were certainly ""cute enough"" to be inside. That is so cheesy and inappropriate for that neighborhood. I'm surprised that such a hipper than thou crowd is not clueing in on it and instead are putting up with it. more

Check it out. 1/20/2003

Piano's is everything I think a bar should be. Its got a standard space up front with different size tables for small or big groups, a long bar, and good beer on tap. In the back is the live music space, which I paid $3 to have access to last night, a female DJ spinning house. The sound quality is good and there's room to dance and to sit along the walls. Upstairs has another bar and more tables if downstairs is too crowded for you. Yes, it is going to be crowded, its a new place. Sunday night was good, crowded but not too crowded, with a fun group of people. Pros: good crowd, live music more

Good Potential But Just So-So 1/17/2003

Pianos could become a great spot in the LES with a few minor changes. First, the music which is just OK to begin with, is blasted so loud you and all your friends will be sounding like Demi Moore with a hangover the following day. Second, after 10:30 on Friday/Saturday it gets so crowded plan on waiting a while to use the restroom, cross the room or order drinks. Speaking of ordering drinks, I was there recently and I am convinced that both of the upstairs bartenders were sharing a single brain. I can't comment on the live music they have, but the set-up is similar to Mercury Lounge. I don't believe I'll be back to Pianos any time soon as my first 4 experiences were ultimately dissapointing. I will, however, try it out again in a few months time with the hopes that their growing pains result in improvement. Pros: Atmosphere, Location, Multiple levels/rooms Cons: Inept Bartenders, Too Crowded, Extremely Loud more

punk, drunk, and lovin' it! 1/11/2003

Pianos has been a great addition to the LES... the area needed a new venue! Also like the fact that there's live music and DJs. Can sometimes get a too ""electroclash-y,"" but overall, the crowd is better than 75% of NYC's nightlife. The music leans towards the disco-punk and rock (yay!)... drinks are reasonably priced, but the food's not really up to par. Overall, a nice new spot-- dive bar with a great (live) jukebox! Pros: great music, inexpensive Cons: poorly handled door, can be way crowded, can be scene-y more
