so delicious!!! 1/2/2008

I recently went there with my fiance because he wanted to try a new restaurant. We saw that they won for "best Vietnamese" on city search and decided to try them out. The place was definitely hopping!!! We waited about 10 minutes and checked out what other patrons were having to give us a clue as to what is good here. Everywhere we looked, we saw huge plates of veggies & herbs. When we asked our server what they were, he pointed us to the "rice paper wraps" section in the menu. At his suggestion, we tried the "Beef Wrapped in Grape Leaves", it blew us away!!! The ground beef had so much flavor. Once we wrapped & rolled our way through, we were hooked, it was so DELICIOUS! We also tried the "Tofu in Lemongrass" & it was equally great. The skin is crisp while the center was soft. So good because it's a little spicy and the flavors just explode in our mouths. Our server was very helpful since this was our first time. Overall, we loved it and can't wait to come back and explore our way through their huge menu. more

I've heard lots of things about this restaurant, especially about how horrible the service is, but I'm always one to judge for myself. . . so here goes! I came in on a Saturday night with my husband and immediately he commented on how busy they were. The host at the counter told us it would be a ten to fifteen minute wait(not bad for a Saturday at all, trust me!) We were seated in five! Awesome, I was so hungry!!! Since it was my first time here, I asked my waiter what would be the best thing to eat? He suggested to start with some spring rolls, so we did. Man, those things were good!!! The best sauce in the world! For our entree, we had the seven courses of beef (our waiter's suggestion once again, who said the service was bad???). It came out with a mountain of veggies and a something rather strange. It looked like we might have some cooking to do,hum. . .Luckily there was our waiter to the rescue, taught us how to cook it, and WOW it was good! There was beef fondue, beef cooked in butter(my favorite) and other assorted rolls and goodies. All were quickly wrapped in rice paper and veggies and devoured! So all in all, I came, I tried, and I was pleasantly surprised! I did notice that the bad reviews were from years ago and I'm telling you everything was stellar. This is my new favorite Vietnamese restaurant ever! I suggest you come and in and try it, you'll be happy you did! more

love it!!! 11/27/2007

I've been coming to Phuong Trang for years and I gotta say they just get better & better. Their new menu has a huge assortment of vietnamese dishes & there are pictures as well as descriptions to the dishes so you know exactly what you're ordering (definitely a plus with vietnamese restaurants). I have to admit that their service wasn't all that a couple of years ago, but now it's terrific! The servers quickly take your order even when they're a packed house & your food comes out faster than expected They refilled your water constantly and is never intrusive, but is around if you need anything. .I love the fact that they are very generous with their food portion. My friends & I ordered their roasted catfish & it was huge!!! It came with a TON of vegetables & herbs as well as noodles, rice paper, and sauce for dipping (most other vietnamese restaurants are pretty stingy with their vegetables). So far I haven't found any dish that I didn't like. Be sure to order the tropical fruit dessert next time you're there cause it's out of this world!!!!! . more

spectacular!!!! 11/24/2007

I've been going there for years, and can't believe these other people saying how bad the food and service is. Not only is the food spectacular, the service I received there was consistently good each time. They're always super busy, especially weekends so that gotta mean something!!! There's always a mix of people from college students to families w/ children to business people. I even saw Lee Ann Kim, Michael Chen, Michael Turko, and other reporters there. If the food is that bad, why would they go there??? So many haters these days!!! more

lousy service 10/10/2005

good news: their pho are cheap compared to other places in SD, but avg pricing compared to other places in NorCal. The food is ok, taste like any other pho restaurants, just that they have a lot more variety bad news: lousy horrible service. Very snobby waiters. Once i requested a small dish to put my sauce in, they gave me a dirty oily dish that had hair, and dust, and dirt, and stains on it. It was GROSS! And i just lost my appetite that whole day more

My favorite SD Viet restaurant 8/12/2005

This is my favorite Vietnamese restaurant in San Diego because the food is great and the prices aren't too bad. Of course, I always order Bun Cha Gio Thit Nuong every time. Currently, that costs $5.95 which is a reasonable price for vermicelli with grilled pork and an egg roll to top. I can't say the service was spectacular, but I've gotten used to that in Asian restaurants. They weren't rude to me either though. So it's just a toss-up. Overall, a good deal. more

I hate to say it but place would be the last place I would pick to go eat at. Service is not that good. They are acutally not that friendly! Also, the food is not all that. You can find better elsewhere. Price is average. Overall, kind of on the low side of the scale. more

Ok food, bad service 8/4/2005

Personally I'd recommend the BBQ meat and fried fish there! They're just delicious!!! They have a lot of stuffs on their menu so obviously I haven't tried them all yet but seriously not all their food are good. Last time my friend ordered fried chow mein and it was burned and I ordered some kind of noodle soup and it was pretty tasteless. Personally I haven't had much of a problem with their service but I've heard a lot of complaints already from most of my friends and I don't think there's any reason for them to lie so here goes... My friends say the waiter are pretty rude as far as Asian customers are concerned. Once my friend and her family went there and they were in line and there was this white couple standing behind them in line. The waiter came and simply ignored my friend's family and served the white couple first. Even the white guy had to say, " I think they came before us" but the waiter didn't seem to care. Just be careful there. more
