right idea, wrong owner. 2/20/2009

i used to run the store at the very beginning of the new ownership. before that a lovely woman ran it (hence the name, GIRLS). i am amused at the comments about "the owner", whose name is Phillip, by the way. not "Phil", PHILLIP. and he IS rude and dismissive. you know how he told me i no longer managed the store? we had customers, were open, and he, with almost a smirk, casually told me my job had been "eliminated". yeah, he's AWESOME. glad to hear Pedro's still around though. we got him for the critters. he went right to work and presto, no more problem. the 1st couple of weeks i'd come in in the morning, clean up the mieces pieces. ..apparently his job was never "eliminated". i do miss the pooches though. that made up for who i had to work for. more

Sweet Girl, Good Selection, Check it Out! 12/4/2006

I've been shopping at the Pet Shop Girls for a few months now and as many regulars know, there is some drama that comes with the place but I've learned to overlook it and appreciate the great things about this store: 1) Super knowledgable staff. Those PetShopGirls always have an answer for my many dog food questions. Also, I know nothing about cats and they helped me pick out a great gift for my sister's cat...cat loved the new bed! 2) Pedro! He is so cute! 3) The Bakery! My dog loves the cookies I get him from the Bakery. Would make good XMAS gifts. I recommend the peanut butter flavor. 4) WAY cheaper than PolkaDog. 5) Cute place...PINK! The rewards program was a dissapointment, but I'm confident the new program will be good. I have heard mixed reviews about the owner, but I have never seen him at the store and I visit 2 times a week. Go and check it out! Highly Recommended. Pros: Bakery, Staff, Parking on Union Park St. is easy Cons: No animals for adoption/sale except crabs? more

Excellent if you avoid the owner! 11/30/2006

This shop has more practical and reasonably priced accessories that the Polka Dog Bakery, has a much bigger cat department (don't even go to Polka Dog if you own a cat) and a comparable food selection. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. Jen in particular is terrific; she knows her stuff and always has helpful suggestions on food or other items. However, the owner stopped a rewards program with no notice to customers. In addition, I heard from a customer how incredibly rude and dismissive the owner was to them about this abrupt end to the rewards program. I guess it was all a scam?? I'm tempted to call the attorney general. Luckily, this owner doesn't seem to be there very often. more

Not worth it 11/20/2006

Convenient to south-enders but lacking in customer service. Sales folks are not knowledgeable about the products they sell, even basics like dog food. When asked the primary difference between the brands and what they would recommend for our dog we were told that they weren't sure and that each has different ingredients and that we should get whatever our dog likes to eat. Great thanks. We subscribed to their reward program which gives you $ savings for each $100 spent. When we reached $100 in sales we were told that we couldn't deduct our reward from that purchase and that we had to wait until next time. When we went next time they told us they stopped their reward program and we couldn't use it. We had to negotiate with the sales woman to be able to use our reward credit. Most retailers that have a reward program still let you use your remaining reward when they discontinue their programs. We also bought a bag of dog food that when we opened had an insect and nest in the food. They did let us exchange it with no hassle. It seems like half the time we go there no one is at the counter and they are downstairs or in a storage closet. We end up yelling "hello, hello" to get someone to help us or check us out. It's not such a big deal but it is annoying and is just one more thing that detracts from our shopping experience. We had considered some of the other places offered by the same company such as Doggie Day, but our experience at the Pet Shop Girls has turned us off for good and we certainly wouldn't trust them watching our pooch! We really wanted it to work because it close to where we live which is why we kept going back even after the bad experiences. In the end, I think it was the reward program that kept us shopping there, and now that it's gone so are we. Pros: Good natural food selection Cons: Lacking in customer service and knowledgeable employees more
