Enh. 4/13/2006

I've only dropped in here occassionally. Some people, particularly those who dislike something corporate just because it is corporate, prefer it to the Barnes and Noble operated Penn Bookstore, but I don't. The Penn Bookstore is cheaper and has a better selection and in general all-around better. many humanities professors send their books here though. more

There are times... 3/30/2006

...when I hate this place. The majority of the humanities professors at Penn assign books from this store (in rebellion to the large happily corporate Penn Bookstore) resulting in the fact that the store is extremely crowded with students, weighed down by ten pounds of books a class for a full week. No used books are available, and at least one of the school-funded payment methods (I can't remember which) is not available. Furthermore, it is impossible to return a book here without showing proof of having dropped the class and other such complications. However, I will vouch for the fact that they kindly keep their class-room inventory longer than expected. Outside of the rush of the start of class, this is a friendly, if of a liberal bent, independent bookstore, calmer and with a good table for browsing. It well suits the atmosphere of Sansom Street on these days. Those others though...surely color my memories more than they should. If anything, attempt to buy books during the middle of the day and be prepared to wait! more

Great for Textbooks, not so great for Casual Reading. 8/11/2005

A lot of Penn professors (in the liberal and social sciences) avoid ordering their books from the Official Barnes and Nobles bookstore and order their books here at the Penn Book Center. Why? Because they believe they are getting students a discount. The prices found at this store, however, are not cheaper. Moreover, they only order a limited quantity, so if you are not first in line, its likely you will not get the books for your class in time for the first class's reading. Aside from textbooks, this store also sells books to the public. Their selection is small and their prices are average. The best reason to go to Penn Book Center is for their sidewalk sales. Every so often, they'll put some tables outside with bins full of books and sell random gems for as low as $0.99. So, if you are on your way to the law school or about to grab a bubble tea, stop by Penn Book Center and check out their sales bin! Also, beware, they are VERY strict on their return policies. more

One of the best Philly area books 7/13/2005

The store is very well organized and clean. There are multiple areas to sit and look over materials such as the cafe, where customers are able to purchase coffee, espressso, ice cream and various other delicious items. There are designated areas within each section and a very interactive area for the children to find books and sit and read them. The store is stocked with materials such as historical, religious, self help, craft and do it your self, art, etc. They also sell games, calendars, bookends, picture frames and various other asssorted items. more

Relevant and easy 6/24/2005

This bookstore is good. It's a lot smaller than many of the famous bookstore chains in the united states, but the diversity of their titles is actually quite amazing. With a friendly cafe on the top level which is usually full at peak hours, this store is a good alternative in a place without too many casual bookstores. Inside Penn Book Center you will find overpriced apparel and a small, nifty computer store where you could also buy some items which might be hard to find around the area... more
