what a service! 1/8/2010

The place was crowded, dirty, dirty restrooms. The bar tender, a tall blond girl did not know what she was doing. How can they have her as a bar tender? Cons: crowded and expensive more

Great Hurricanes and bar! 5/28/2008

The bar at Pat O'Brien's is a great place to stop on a hot afternoon to cool off with a huge, incredibly refreshing Hurricane, play the jukebox, and relax for a while. It's really crowded and loud at night, so we liked it better during the day. Across from the bar is a gigantic cocktail lounge with a bar and lots of tables and chairs, but it fills to overflowing at night. Two piano players are featured at night (not sure if it's just on weekends), but they don't live up to the atmosphere of either New Orleans or this great lounge. They play songs the audience can sing along to, but not very good ones. We actually heard them do Def Leppard's "Pour Some Sugar on Me"--yikes! It would be so much better if they had jazz performers. Still, the Hurricanes were the best we tasted, and it's a fun place, so go! more

awesome bar 5/8/2007

i enjoy this bar for its chill scene. it does get crowded but not sweaty like any other dance club. although it does have plenty of different rooms to hang out, i love the outdoor patio because it is large and perfect to meet people. of course, when it is raining, it is not as fun, but if you are resourceful (or go to one of the rooms), you can still enjoy a rainy day at pat o'briens. i am not much of a hurricane drinker but people seem to like those made by pat o'brien bartenders. more

Tourists, Tourists 4/15/2007

Great place if you want the Bourbon st experience off of Bourbon. I have had to take clients there twice in the last 6 months & beg anyone coming to the city to venture out of the quarter & experience some local joints! more

a mature setting 11/8/2006

If you like your drinks with a touch of citrus to it, then try the hurricane. I try to stay away because its really popular with the Bourbon tourists but if you're in a group then its fine to hang here for a while and them move on to many more holes in the wall. more

What is a mint julep? 7/21/2005

I promise, it is not some kind of green mixed drink!!! My first time there, the bartender fixed me up. Gave me a double! Okay, for those who (like me) actually may not know, a mint julep is bourbon whiskey with crushed mint leaves and nothing else. It is really good, if you like straight whiskey. Pros: atmosphere, staff, several bars Cons: CROWDED, touristy more

Great place to drink. Okay to eat. 6/26/2005

Yes it's a tourist trap (and I hate tourist traps) but I still love Pat O'Briens. Mostly go there for the drinks since there are tons of better dining locations in New Orelans. I figured the hurricanes would be watered down and overly sugary. However after sitting around for a couple of hours these things will put even the strongest on their butts. more

Typically tourist 3/15/2005

If you like lots of drunks, loud noises, average food, but strong drinks, this is your place. And yeah, you can tell all of your friends when you get back home that you went there. more

Great Place to Eat "cheap" 9/7/2004

My husband and I loved the crawfish nachos! We were treated well and the food was worth the cost of finding this beautiful courtyard! We were surprised at the low prices on the menu and were excited to have found somewhere were the beers were not $5.00 and a hurricane (a GREAT hurricane) was well less than $8.50. Not overpriced, great outdoor dining and great, helpful staff. LOVED IT! Pros: Inexpensive more

Hurricane Party! 8/30/2004

I'm a local that keeps going back to this tourist bar. Gotta love it. Great tradition, excellent bartenders, strong drinks @ a good price... Take a cab so you wont have to worry about parking... OR driving afterwards... Check out the bar right off of Bourbon Street... they call it the Bourbon Bar... Its our oasis... Pros: Great Prices, Excellent Bartenders, Lots of women more

Interesting Place 7/12/2004

The Hurricanes were great. I ordered a salad and it was ok but expensive. My son ordered gumbo and said it was good. I think everyone should go at least once. Overall I would recommend this place just to get a "feel" for New Orleans. Pros: drinks, atmosphere more

Beautiful place and service 6/27/2004

The place is gorgeouos, as is the view. The famous Hurricane was a little overpowering for my taste, but it was still good. The best part of this place was the ambience and the service. The food was great too, but the waiter and the feel of the place was my favorite part. I recommend the wings and the coconut shrimp. Also, I went for lunch, so it was not as crowded as I heard it gets. Pros: atmosphere, food, service more

What about this 2/21/2004

No one even mentioned, that if you are going for a good time, and some drinks, BESIDES a hurricane, where you can get it all over the city...how about Tropical Isle's HAND GRENADE, where you can't get it anywhere else, because it's a trademark. I just got back from NOLA, and Tropical Isle was the best place I went. Live music, great drinks, and lots of fun people. more

best on bourbon 2/17/2004

went there when i was in new orleans for a marketing convention in college...it rocked! best hurricanes, best atmosphere, flaming fountians....the best! more

Hurricanes 8/5/2003

This was the first place we went to the first time we went to New Orleans. It's a bit of a tourist trap and you generally won't see any localers here. All the same it is a blast and we returned everytime since. The music is condusive to a good time and it's the only place that I've found really good Hurricanes (b/c they're the original). There is no where to dance, and it gets a little crowded, but overall it's a good time. We never spent a lot of time inside the piano bar b/c the outside is so cool... Pros: Great Hurricanes, Good Music Cons: Crowded, No Dancing more

Hurricane Heaven! 5/29/2003

This was one of the first places we stopped into while visiting the French Quarter. I had one of their famous Hurricanes (delicious!) and my husband ordered a beer. My drink was flavorful and pretty strong, although their prices seem a little steep. We paid nearly 10 dollars for my mixed drink in a throw-away cup and my husband's beer served in the can. Good service and excellent entertainment offset the overpriced drinks though. We'll definitely visit again! Pros: Good Service, Strong Drinks, Entertainment Cons: Crowded more

So many drinks so little time 1/15/2003

Pat O's has a lot of drinks to choose from...Only one I will drink...For $6 you get a huge drink and it only take a few to get you drunk. It's crowded but yet relaxed...Always a great time. Pros: Relaxed, Great Drinks Cons: crowded more

O'Boy! 1/12/2003

This spot is just right for those looking to leave the kids at home and head to a hip spot and have a hurricane or two! It is casual and the atmosphere is great for a couple or a party of people. Great vibe...highly recommended! Pros: atmosphere Cons: parking more

Pat O's 11/30/2002

Wonderful atomsphere! Make sure to go into the Piano Bar as well as the courtyard. Numerous photos can be taken, make sure to bring cash to tip piano players! Pros: music variety, location, people Cons: smoke, crowded at times more

  • The Scene
A brick-lined entranceway leads to a small, cozy meeting space. It's an intimate place for a quiet drink--if you manage to arrive before it becomes packed with college kids. Directly across sits a much more spacious piano bar with beer steins hanging from the ceiling for a nice decorative touch. Spiral staircases leading up to the bathrooms lend a stately elegance.

    The Draw
The sprawling patio-courtyard area is where the action is; its centerpiece is the famous flaming fountain. Expect tables full of rowdy college kids, tourists and young debs. Although the bloody mary is top-notch, the hurricane is Pat O's signature drink. This heady rum-based concoction is renowned for its potency and the large lamp-shaped glass it comes in. The Courtyard Restaurant serves bar bites ranging from crawfish nachos to catfish strips, and traditional entrees including red beans and rice and jambalaya.
