Pat O Brien's in New Orleans 7/18/2006

It has been a number of years but I still remember the delicious taste of a Hurricane from Pat O Brien's. Now, I am a big fan of drinks with rum but the Hurricane is probably one of my favorites. Pat O Brien's has seating indoor and outdoor to make it an enjoyable experience no matter the weather. You can also get a souvenir glass if you would like. more

Pat O'Brien's 7/15/2006

Before we visited New Orleans we were told about Pat O'Brien's bar. We were also told to beware of the hurricanes. Coming from Florida I smartly replied that we have hurricanes. They said not like these. I soon found out when we visited Pat O'Brien's bar. The drink to have at Pat O'Brien's is its very own Hurricane, the dark rum and fruit juice concoction that has resulted in more Bourbon Street vomiting than possibly any other. Dating back to speakeasy days, Pat O'Brien's is a festive, albeit very touristy spot--a good place to finish off that first Friday night in the Quarter after you've had a couple. You can sing all those songs you know the words to, like 'Cheeseburger in Paradise' or maybe your college fight song, while a couple of piano players accompany you and a large room full of people. Occasionally there is an antediluvian gentleman in dark glasses who plays, with the aid of some sort of metal claws attached to his fingers, a serving tray. The piano playing is awesome and non stop. more

the home of the hurricane!... is that too soon 3/19/2006

Of course you expect to see tourists here... and you know what the drinks and food'll be like, so I'll just give you the tips. When you order drinks, most of them will come in souvenir glasses.... after several beverages, its easy to forget that. You don't, however, have to keep that glass! you can take it back for 3 or 4$s (i don't remember which... too much to drink...) Now. I went with a Tulane student who taught me the art of watching to see who is going to get up from their table and most likely forget their glasses..... so you watch. you see people get up and leave, then you swoop in and take all the glasses, turn em in, and use the proceeds to buy your next few drinks. :) Next. when you have your money, and you're fixin to buy your beverage.... keep in mind... and this is so sneaky of them.... the prices are different at the different bars! I cant remember for sure... but i think the piano bar was the cheapest one. so. check first to see which one is the cheapest one. :) more

Drink and party..... 7/16/2005

Pat Obrien's is a tradition in New Orleans. Being in a wheelchair I can enter the courtyard portion of the bar. There are steps inside the Obrien bar and it's usually crowded. But you can sit in the courtyard listen to the music and drink the fabulous Hurricanes.... If you're an easy drunk, one or two is all u need. more

  • The Scene
A brick-lined entranceway leads to a small, cozy meeting space. It's an intimate place for a quiet drink--if you manage to arrive before it becomes packed with college kids. Directly across sits a much more spacious piano bar with beer steins hanging from the ceiling for a nice decorative touch. Spiral staircases leading up to the bathrooms lend a stately elegance.

    The Draw
The sprawling patio-courtyard area is where the action is; its centerpiece is the famous flaming fountain. Expect tables full of rowdy college kids, tourists and young debs. Although the bloody mary is top-notch, the hurricane is Pat O's signature drink. This heady rum-based concoction is renowned for its potency and the large lamp-shaped glass it comes in. The Courtyard Restaurant serves bar bites ranging from crawfish nachos to catfish strips, and traditional entrees including red beans and rice and jambalaya.
