Pleasant Surprise! 7/22/2002

What a pleasant surprise! As a Chicagoan, I have found St Louis restaurants to be fast paced, getting drinks, salads, apps, and main course all served within an hour. This was a treat! We were greeted, seated, and served drinks that we were allowed to enjoy before given menus. The menu is small and descriptions are accurate. The caesar was not swimming and the house salad that comes with the entrees was had ZERO iceberg! The filet was given a thumbs up as well the lamb. The penne was a tasty vegetarian option. Noone was disappointed. Our party skipped dessert for a trip next door to the Chocolate Bar. I will be returning again soon. Pros: Excellent Service, Presentation, Value for Price Cons: Paced Meal more

  • The Ambience
Park Avenue Bistro lives up to its name: The space is small and intimate, black-and-white photographs hang on exposed-brick walls, and jazz accompanies the food. Service is attentive and friendly.

    The Food
Appetizers include mussels, portobello "carpaccio," crab cakes, and daily soup and bruschetta specials. Steamed mussels ($7.25) come in a flavorful white wine, shallot and tomato broth, but on my visit the mussels themselves were hit-and-miss--some fresh, some fishy. The spinach salad ($5.50) is not to be missed, with grapes, black currants and Fuji apples joining the more traditional walnuts and Gorgonzola vinaigrette. Pecan-encrusted trout, New York strip steak, fettuccini with vegetables, and chicken paillard are among the entrees. The trigger fish special ($16.50), a white, meaty fish over barley risotto with portobello and shiitake mushrooms, was excellent
