Great Atmosphere 11/5/2006

The food was great! I understand that the worst days are Friday & Saturday evenings. This was my first time going & I am telling ALL of my friends. I live in the south suburbs & the only soul food restaurant that everyone talks about is Dustys. "Paje can put Dustys out of business. My friend & I went on a Sunday afternoon - the only downside was that the restaurant doesnt open up until 3:00 p.m. We got to pick any seat we wanted & our waitress was very caring to our needs. The portions were more than enough & they even have RED kool-aid. I will be returning. Pros: Portions was more than enough Cons: Resturant doesn't open until 3:00 p.m. on Sunday; Parking more

Baby on Board 2/27/2006

My girlfriends said I had to hang out one last time before I had my son, so at 7 months with child they take me to Paje'. I in fact had a wonderful time because it was the best of both worlds in one place. The only down side is being pregnant I was ready to eat and they were not ready to serve, we waited 2 hours to be seated and just about another two for our food to come some of which never did arrive. I would go back but only on a full stomach. Pros: tasty food, nice crowd, good flava Cons: SLOOOOOOOW service! more

Best food, Worst service 1/5/2006

My wife and I love to visit Paje's atleast once a month and I must say that they have very consistent tendencies. The food is always great and the service is always terrible. We love their catfish nugget appetizers and their steaks. If the food was not outstanding the service would make you run to McDonalds. Once the service improves then I would dare to say that this is the best restaurant in Chicago. Pros: Valet parking, Food, Location Cons: Service, Service, Service more

I love the Chocolate Martini it had a hint of Amaretto in it. I like the jerk chicken wings. Even though the service was slow. The ambience and drinks will make me come back. Pros: ambience, martinis, good food Cons: slow service more

Inconsistent Customer Service 9/15/2004

Paje's atmosphere was classy and the music was great, but the smoke from the kitchen gave the atmosphere a smelly haze. Paje has lots of variety on their menu, but they are overpriced. They even charge if you share a meal & 18% tip for parties over 5! Paje's food is really, really good. However, Paje's service is HORRIBLE. We never received our "complimentary" flapjacks, we had to cue our inattentive waitress for water, utensils, and to bring already ordered beverages. If you read all the previous reviews there are definetly inconsistencies in Paje's customer service. I witnessed myself others got more preferential treatment than others. My dining experience was so bad that I personally will never dine here again and dissuade others from dining here due to the poor customer service. It's a shame, because their food is really good. Pros: Food, Location, Music Cons: , Long wait, Overpriced more

Worth Trying 8/3/2004

Paje's was well worth trying. The jerk chicken wings are absolutely fabulous. I also had the best Dirty Vodka Martini I have had anywhere. The wait was long and the serivce a bit slow, but the food is good. A bit over priced for soul food, but the Martini and the Jerk Chicaken Wings are worth going back for. Pros: Food, Drinks Cons: , Slow service, Price more

Right On The Money 11/16/2003

I would like to add that this place is off the hook! As a special night, a close friend of the family insisted that try this place. In addition, we were very pleased that we did! The food was more then words could express, for a moment I thought my Grandmother was in the kitchen cooking. The D.J. could have played those old school records for me all night long! Are host Pre (I think that was his name) was very good also, are food was hot and are drinks were just right! GOOD MUSIC, GOOD FOOD & MUST OF ALL A GOOD TIME! Pros: INEXPENSIVE , NICE ATMOSPHERE, VERY GOOD SERVICES more

Ridiculously Slow 4/28/2003

Nothing about this place says soul. For starters, the waitstaff and service is horrible. I took my mother there for her birthday on Sunday, 4/27/03. The restaurant opened at 3pm. I got there at 3pm, were one of the 1st group there. The wait to be seated was apprx. 15 minutes. Placed our orders for appetizers and entrees at 3:30 (appetizers and food came 1hr. 15 minutes later! The jerk chicken was charred and way to spicy; sent it back because I was dissatisfied and the 2nd batch of 4 wings were way under cooked. The portions were not complimentary to the prices (side dishes $4). There was only one waitress to attend the entire place (Dee, thank you) so that slowed the service up tremendously. The blueberry pancakes were good, however, there is a lot of "stuff" going on in Paje', but it's definitely not soul or the food. Pros: Catchy Name, Nice wall paintings, Blueberry pancakes Cons: Food quality/$$, Small Dining area, Terrible service more

Slow service 3/22/2003

The food was excellent, once it arrived. It took an hour for us to order and then another hour for the food to arrive. The music was too loud upstairs. Excellent Catfish. Excellent Spinach, Excellent Potatoes. Pros: nice ambience Cons: no parking more

Scorpitize 3/5/2003

This is a well kept sexy secret! You and anyone you invite will love it! orer the KOOL-AID yes old skool type. Go upstairs to the dance partyafter 12am. The cook reminds me of Uncle JoeJoe from downsouth. Don't be surprise if the wait staff start danicing and singing to the live DJ that plays while you eat! The food is wonderful take your time while ordering! The catfish is OFF THE HOOK!. If you need a get away for you and your spouse/lover or friends this is the place . The portions are very nice you will be full. They also have comedy night kids can't come but bring them any other time. But!!!! If you have more than one child spilt a plate don't double order that is if they are younger or don't eat much. Good luck ENJOY! more

Apalling 1/31/2003

For openers, the bartender couldn't make a martini. Our waiter stood at the foot of a long table and shouted at us and we shouted orders back at him. After we finished the appetizers, the waiter stood at the end of the table with a bus pan and chided us to "Pass those empty plates down" Otherwise the table was left to accumulate a terrible mess. The food could have been OK if every dish had not been terribly oversalted. It took 3 hours to get fed and get out. Pros: close to home, I survived Cons: horrible service, oversalted food, incompetant staff more

oh honey 1/26/2003

I had the pleasure of dining on a late sunday night. The food was great, the service was great, and the people were great. The staff seemed so happy to see us and all the customers were very warm and friendly and ready to party. Pros: Inexpensive, Delicious, Atmosphere Cons: Parking, Monochromatic Crowd, Not for large groups more

YEAH BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 1/18/2003

Now this right here is off the hook!!! When I went for the first time it was August 2002 on a wednesday night (Comedy night), to see one of my co-workers perform live for the first time ever. The service was excellent, the food was incredible, and they even threw a party upstairs after the comedy show. I came away quite impressed, and eager to return. If you wanna hang out for dinner with your homie's or your wife/girlfried, this is the place. Even if you just want to party, you can do that as well, without all the drama involved. Definately pass this information on to your friends. I know I'll be back there with my friends!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Pros: Excellent food, Great service, Nice environment Cons: No available parking, Too small, Small restrooms more

"Good Time in the City" 11/20/2002

Had a great time at Paje Place, will recommend to all that are looking for something different in the downtown area. To the owner and staff, keep up the diligent effort to accommodate so many people,we tend to forget this is not a fast food joint. more

Floored & Full 11/17/2002

We were at Paje's on Saturday, November 16th for dinner. We were the first customers that evening and contrary to my previous visit there I want to commend the waitstaff (Tolega - I hope I spelled her name correctly) on her attentiveness. Our previous visit oin October 20, 2002 wasn't a pleasant one, but Saturday left me floored. I am recommending Paje's to all of my friends and family. I had the Chicken & Waffles and can truly say every bite was delicious. My compliments to the chef. Pros: Great Food, Beautiful Decor, Attentiveness Cons: Too Dim for Dining, Men's Room Lock more

  • In Short
A lime-green bar and burnt-red sign jump out from exposed-brick walls in the bi-level dining room. Stand-up comics sometimes take the stage between vocal acts. Otherwise, smooth R&B is turned way up, inspiring step dancing from diners between courses. The menu is Southern, and most dishes are deep-fried or smothered in gravy. Watch for jerk chicken wings, char-grilled catfish with angel hair pasta or cinnamon-crusted sweet-potato cheesecake.
