the best burgers 7/26/2005

Paul's Place has the best burgers anywhere. There's actually nothing else to say, but these reviews are supposed to be 50 words, so I must go on. They are the perfect size and always perfectly cooked. There is a huge variety and you can get just about any topping you can think of. They're also cheap and the atmosphere is combo diner and amusement park. I actually miss them when I go too long without and don't want to leave the neighborhood to a place where I can't have them every weekend (if I so choose). Apparently, they also make great Philly cheese steaks and serve omlettes, but I see no reason to try anything other than the burgers. more

Best Burgers For Less 4/22/2005

If you're looking for a great burger in the Village, then Paul's Place is where you'll want to be. The burgers are big and juicy and the prices fit even the most frugal of budgets. It's great for a casual first date or catching up with old friends. Different kinds of wind up toys and different kinds of memorabilia adorn the resturant. However, it's not the best place to bring a big group and they don't accept credit cards. Other than that, once you try one of the different kinds of burgers they have, you'll become a regular! more

Editorial

  • The Scene
The decor at this small, dark East Village fixture is basic black-and-white-checked diner, but a panoply of cute toys--clowns, tightrope walkers--buzz and whirr overhead. It all makes for a friendly, slightly off-kilter atmosphere that's reinforced by the homespun but sassy service. A couple of TVs show whatever game happens to be on.

    The Food
Can a burger be healthy? Probably not, but somehow, the tender, juicy fried 1/2-pound slabs of pure beef (or turkey) at Paul's go down easier--and digest quicker--than those at other New York burger joints. There's no skimping on size or variety; the list offers more than 20 burger options, and you'll need a knife and fork to grapple with topping-stuffed specials like the Eastsider (partly because of the delicious ham, partly because the buns are undersized). Other menu items include Philly cheese steaks, omelettes and sandwiches--and the shakes are good, too.
