we had always heard that OTC was great. my wife and I decided to give it a try. one catch...we had to be out of there within a certain time. we waited about 5 minutes for a tab...

Wonderful neighborhood diner 1/9/2012

We sat at the counter of this wonderful, homey, neighborhood diner and enjoyed a hot breakfast while watching the cook, who was less than a foot from us and working in a space in which he could barely turn around. I mean, you can't find an atmosphere like that just anywhere! Excellent food and customer service are offered by this little gem of a diner in East Millcreek. Highly recommended. more

My favorite spot :) 7/28/2011

I love getting a burger any way you want it, or those eggs and bacon mmmmmm. Everything is great and just found out everything is local, even better! more

Best Breakfast, hands down 3/21/2011

This is my favorite place to eat. I can walk in and get a yummy breakfast and good cup of coffee, and be myself. The food is great - real eggs, cheese, potatoes, bread - always fresh! The kitchen is right in the middle so you can see them cooking your breakfast. The people are friendly and down to earth. Their prices are good too. I'm a customer for life! more

Unsanitary. Just plain dirty. 3/14/2010

I am really surprised this place has such good reviews. It was very unsanitary, kitchen staff (who weren't wearing any kid of hairnet) were touching themselves, then the food. We watched the waitress handle menus, money, dirty plates, and THEN, yes, she touched the food without stopping to wash her hands even once. We canceled our order and left the restaurant. I can home and check the health department's webpage and was not shocked to see that the restaurant received 2 out of 5 stars and has been flagged for 6 ""critical"" violations, which are violations that have the potential to cause foodborne illness. I, like many other reviewers on this cite, could not believe the uncleanliness. Cons: Unsanitary. Just plain dirty. more

Great breakfast on the cheap. 5/25/2009

The staff here is great and know me by name. They have my coffee with cream waiting for me before i have had a chance to sit. The coffee never hits bottom. The french toast is nice and moist, and they have a great Spanish Omelet. Pros: Huge slices of bacon. Cons: parking. more

Home-Made Food, Top Quality Ingredients, Best Service Around 11/23/2008

One of the best locally owned and operated breakfast places in the city! The restaurant is run by the owners--a couple who personally supervise the place almost every day of the year. I love this place for three reasons: (1) Simple home-made food with top-quality ingredients. (2) A bright, friendly atmosphere. (3) Amazingly friendly and fast service. They serve eggs and pancakes with home made potatoes, fresh vegetables, perfectly crisp bacon, and real butter. The price range is in the middle-about $9 per person for coffee and breakfast. The breakfast steak or pork chops are a great value. The giant hamburgers are also great! Pros: best service in town, personally run by the owners Cons: Only takes cash! more

Great Breakfast! 9/24/2008

This isn't supposed to be a gourmet health-food place. It is what it Pros: Great breakfasts! Cons: The ambience is what it is--""over the counter"" In think that's a pro more

Expect a wait - trust me, it's worth it 7/22/2008

I've been frequenting this cafe for about 11 years and it will always be a favorite. The place is packed every weekend morning but considering how busy it is, it doesn't take too long to be seated. Most of the servers are very friendly and attentive - even the bussers are courteous and say ""hello"". Make sure to get the home fries with your breakfast and if they have them, a blueberry muffin with butter. Pros: Tasty food, friendly staff Cons: Ackward seating, no substitutions - don't bother asking more

no no no no no 6/21/2008

unless you want to put yourself at risk of getting sick, don't eat here. it has a reputation of being a hip and cool place to be, but the food prep is dismal. just look at the cooks handle uncooked foods and prep plates with cooked food without washing their hands or using other hand-sanitizing methods. the wait isn't worth it. Cons: potential for food-born illness, wait, parking more

won't be eating here again 4/25/2008

watch as the cooks break eggs & throw raw meat on the grill, and then put finished food on the plates for service, all without washing their hands. it's a cross contamination nightmare. more

Great breakfast/brunch 1/7/2007

Visited at the recommendation of other reviewers. It's a great find--a reasonably-priced restaurant that really cares about the food and service. Fantastic eggs and bacon cooked to order. One warning: Fat and cholesterol watchers should make sure to ask for everything without butter--they really heap it on. French toast was cinammon-y and excellent. Great for kids and groups. Pros: Great, inexpensive food, attentive service more

Best omelette in AMERICA! 11/30/2005

This place is great! I have eaten here no less than 40 times. I have never had a bad meal here. The food is always fresh and the service is down right southern charm. You won't find a better deal for your money. Take my advice...for ultimate satisfaction eat breakfast at the ""over the counter cafe"". EXCELLENT! EXCELLENT! EXCELLENT! BEST OMELETTE IN TOWN! WITHOUT QUESTION! Pros: Fresh food, Friendly service, Southern charm Cons: None, None, None more

Good, cheap breakfast 11/19/2005

Decided to try this restaurant after finding it here in Citysearch. Walked in, seated myself in a booth. Everyone was friendly, including the cook! My breakfast: Western omelette with cheese, home fries, toast and coffee. The home fries were potato strips with the skin on, YUM!! One drawback: I asked for gravy, either white or brown. THEY DON'T MAKE ANY :( The omelette was stuffed and the ham, peppers and onions were piled around the outside of the omelette. The waitress kept my coffee full. The breakfast was just a smidge greasy, not too much. Hey, where I'm from that's called FLAVOR. Total cost? Like about $7.81. I'll be back... Pros: cozy, inexpensive, good food Cons: no credit cards, parking when busy more

Home Style Breakfast 8/27/2005

Ate at OTC for the first time and the food and service was great. You seat yourself and its a what I call a true ""diner"". The bacon is thick and excellant. Value is the best out there. Belly up to the counter in front of the kitchen or grab a booth. Pros: large portions, thick bacon, fast service Cons: no credit cards more

Saturday mecca! 5/6/2003

I went to Over the Counter for the first time last Saturday. The place was bustling with energy, and hungry patrons filled the entire dining area. The food was simple down hom cooking. The home fries are EXCELLENT, and the bacon is thick and smokey. I recommend the 2 egg breakfast with bacon, ham or sausage for $4. They give you 4 large strips of bacon, so you better have someone to share with. The breakfast was excellent and the atmosphere was great. I highly recommend it. Pros: cheap eats Cons: parking, coffee more

OTC Junkie 12/5/2002

Best Breakfast hands down! (I can't believe Blue Plate is even in the same catergory, I'd rather go to Burger King, the service and food are better). I love Sunday brunch and have been to most of the joints on the best breakfast list but I would give up the scenery and music at Ruths, the biscuits at Park Cafe and all the other places just to sit on a mismatched chair and watch them cook my #2, over medium, bacon, and white toast at OTC, There is no better way to start a day! Pros: Great Food, Great Deal Cons: Worth the wait more

not a good first experience 10/26/2002

we had always heard that OTC was great. my wife and I decided to give it a try. one catch...we had to be out of there within a certain time. we waited about 5 minutes for a table on saturday morning...no problem. we sat down and asked our server if we could get our food and be gone within 30 minutes. he said ""oh yeah"". we ordered and waited, and waited, and waited, and waited. 30 minutes pass and no food...we had to leave without even seeing our food let alone eating it. we cannot rate our food for obviuos reasons, the server didn't make sure our food would be up in time to eat it, nor did it seem anyone cared. just DON'T go here if you are in a hurry! By the way, they lost their chance with us...we won't be back. Pros: good rep Cons: bad parking, clueless service more
