Great activity for the Whole family 4/16/2006

Going to the Zoo at Christmas time has become a family tradition for us. At Christmas time they have a train that you can ride and see lighted up animals all along the track. It's a really fun thing to do. Our kids love to go and it's fun for the whole family. They usually have concessions for sale too so if it's too cold, you can buy coffee or hot chocolate. more

It's a Zoo! 4/6/2006

I love the Oregon Zoo. It's set in a beautiful area of Washington Park in Portland Oregon. There are lots of trees and it's a great setting. We have a yearly pass, which really pays for itself in 2 or 3 visits. We try and get there just a few minutes before it opens and have often had the zoo virtually to ourselves for 30 minutes or so until attendance picks up. It's wonderful. There are plenty of animals and they are expanding and adding exhibits all the time. Recently, we watched the bird show and it was fun, informative and impressive. I was amazed at the majestic and varied birds they had, many of whom were rescued or could not survive in the wild. Food at the zoo is a little pricey, but they have fun kids meals with an animal toy, if you are in a generous mood. Otherwise, pack a lunch and eat out on the big lawn. It makes for a really fun day. more

This Zoo has it all! 3/21/2006

The Oregon zoo is one of the most amazing zoos I have ever been to. I feel so lucky that we have this zoo right in our backyard. The Polar Bears and Penguins are our favorite exhibits. The Polar Bear exhibit allows both underwater and above ground view of the bears. These bears are really active. Most of the time, (except on really hot days) you will find them frolicking with a variety of toys in their yard. I'm very excited about the upcoming changes that will be coming to the Oregon zoo over the next couple of years. In addition to bringing Warty Pigs, Ocelots and Cougars, it appears that they are working on the flow of the zoo, to make it a more natural progression. This zoo is only going to get better! more

Beautiful Zoo and Location 1/28/2006

The Oregon Zoo offers more than just a place to see animals. Tucked into the lush hills of Portland, the setting alone is enough to draw you in. Over the past five years, there have been a lot of updates in the animals and their “cages.” As an animal lover, I greatly appreciate all their efforts to give the animals a more humane and realistic living environment. We have also been fortunate enough to try the behind the scenes event and it is worth the expense. We fed giraffes and the rhinoceros, got a very close-up view of the bears, and shook hands with a penguin. The zoo concerts in the summer and the zoo lights in the fall are also excellent adventures to explore. Be sure to arrive early to avoid the long lines though!! more

Fun for Kids 1/14/2006

The Portland Zoo caters to the younger crowd with lots of fun animal exhibits. Kids can ride a small train through the grounds. Be warned that they may get tired since the zoo covers quite a bit of territory and some of it is hilly. I didn't really like the old feel of the zoo. Parts of it felt dingy but it is still a fun place to spend a day. more

Nice Place for the Family to Spend a Day 12/30/2005

I guess my out of town snobbery is showing but I don't think this is the greatest zoo in the world, as many people I have met do. Basically, it's small. After visiting the Phoenix Zoo and the San Diego Zoo I guess I've just come to expect zoos to be..well..large...this isn't. Still, it's a nice place. It is VERY clean and cheerful. You can't be sad when you are there. The animals are fun and there are many exhibits I have not seen in other zoos. I'd like to see larger habitats for some of the animals, but I know space is limited. It is nice to be able to see them close up, however. I would suggest the zoo for all families. Just don't expect it to be anything mind blowing. more

Great Zoo - Fun for all ages 12/20/2005

Portland has a pretty great zoo. There is lots to see, and lots to explore, for all ages. I enjoy the cool new sand pit for the kids to play and the parents to rest their feet. They have recently imposed a $2 parking fee, but if you are a zoo member it is free. I suggest a family membership if you go a couple of times a year. more

Must see zoo 12/17/2005

I absolutey love going to this zoo. We usually drive and they have plenty of parking. We've also taken the max before and it was a really easy walk from the max to the zoo entrance. The cost to get in is very reasonable and so is the price of food and drinks. We always take our kids on the zoo train and get off at the Rose Garden to look around there too. It's a nice relaxing ride for the adults who get tired. The animals here are wonderful. Me and the kids never get tired of watching them. This year I plan to go here during the Christmas lights things. I've heard great things about that. This is definately a place to visit if your in the Portland area more

Love it! 12/14/2005

The whole family loves a trip to the zoo. We bought the family membership and it has been more than worth it. It is a beautiful zoo built into the hills west of Portland. Lots of different types of animals and educational opportunities. They have quite a few food options including a decent sit down restaurant. Combine it with a trip to the Children's Museum or the World Forestry Center. All 3 are great outings that the kids love. more

Wonderful, huge zoo 12/2/2005

I love the Oregon Zoo. It has so many animals, and so many different exhibits. It is so fun to take the kids there. Remember to bring walking shoes! It is built onto a hill. And bring an umbrella, that Oregon weather is unpredictable. My only complaint is the cost, it seemed a little steep. more

A nice zoo. 11/28/2005

My family really enjoys the Washington Park Zoo. It always seems clean and the animals well taken care of. I like that they have made efforts toward easy viewing of the animals. Although it isn't as incredible as Miami's "cageless" zoo, it is much better than a lot of zoos that have so many bars that little ones can't see anything. They also seem to be continually updating. The last time we were there, we watched a show at the amphitheater about birds of prey, and that was a lot of fun. The food is your standard zoo fare, underwhelming and overpriced, but there are lots of nice spots to bring your own food and have a picnic. It’s definitely a nice way to spend an afternoon. more

Excellent Zoo! 10/28/2005

The Oregon Zoo is an excellent for a date, or for a family outing. As a large family we have bought the family membership and it makes it so worth it. I highly recommend it, if you live in the metro area. It is a big zoo with lots to see, so with membership you can leave after only an hour or so, and not feel like you've waisted your money. We break up the zoo in sections for each visit. Parking is free if you are a member, so that is a plus. You will want to get there early to get a place to park on the weekends, well even during the week. My only complaint is the big cats exhibit. Every time we go to the zoo we never get to see them, because they are hiding, or inside. more

What else could you ask for 10/7/2005

Going to this zoo you definitely get your money's worth. The wait in line is usually short, and there is a huge variety of different exhibits to go to that are all fun. The polar bears and elephants are two of the favorite exhibits, and there are many more to see (although they don't have as many animals as bigger zoos). To top it all off, the zoo is in a beautiful setting in Portland and is well kept. The only downfall is the parking, which is limited depending on the crowd. The layout can be a little confusing at times, but well illustrated maps solve that problem. The only advice is to wear comfortable shoes because you will surely be doing a lot of walking. more

Great place for families! 9/30/2005

I have lots of great memories of visiting the zoo as a kid and it has changed so much and has even more cool things now! I have been to a lot of different zoos in different cities and I think this is one of the best. They have a lot of different exhibits broken into different "climates." One of my favorites is the African Rainforest. I love taking my kids here and I think I regress a little when I go!! They have a special Halloween event and you can take your kids trick or treating there. One of my all time favorite things to take my kids to is the Zoo Lights during the Christmas season. Admission is about $9 for adults and $6 for children. If you plan on going often, you may want to consider a family membership. It's not much more than admission for your family for one day would be and it's definitely worth it! more

Great place for ALL ages! 9/29/2005

If you're living near the area, it's well worth the money to become a Zoo Member. We love to take our family REGULARLY to the zoo. It's very family-friendly, and there are many exhibits that change often enough that every time you go, you'll see something new. One Con is that the prices are fairly high for a one-time visit, and for the food on-site. It's recommended that you bring your own food and snacks if you plan on visiting often so that you don't break the bank! We love the zoo staff too, they're wonderful, friendly, and helpful. more

Portland is lucky to have this zoo! 9/26/2005

I have been to many zoos all across the country, and this is actually one of the best I have ever visited. I just love this place! The original designers did a great job organizing the zoo, and the recent renovations have only improved things. There are lots of exhibits with glass walls that let you get close to the animals - not only with the sea creatures such as otters and seals, but also polar bears, penguins and some of the big cats! Recent additions to the zoo such as the Northwest area and the seasonal butterfly exhibit are wonderful, and Lorikeet Landing, where you can feed the colorful birds, is alway fun. My kids love to feed the birds! The zoo train is nice- it's too bad that you can't see the animals from it, but it is a pretty ride and the train is fun, especially for younger ages. If you plan on coming often, you should get a family membership - it is very affordable and lets you come as often as you want during the year - a great value for some wonderful family entertainment! more

An adventure for the whole family! 9/21/2005

We LOVE the Oregon Zoo! There is so much to do there. They have really expanded in the last few years to include many new exhibits. We really love the Stellar Cove, Eagle Canyon, and the Trillium Creek Family Farm exhibits. We also enjoy the many different events they have scheduled throughout the year, such as the World Animal Festival, Rabit Romp, and the very popular Zoo Lights! My children really enjoy playing in the sandbox located by the Stellar Cove exhibit. I highly recommend buying an annual membership to the Oregon Zoo. It is well worth the money, and you get additional benefits (discounts on train rides, gift shop purchases, etc.). If you purchase a membership at the "plus level", you will also get free admission to all the Summer Wednesday and Thursday night concerts! more

Great place to spend the day with kids 9/1/2005

My kids love to go here. There is plenty to see. I like this Zoo because it isn't so large that it is overwhelming. The Zoo train is a joke. It is kinda like the behind the scenes tour of the Zoo. You can see great things like the back of buildings and if you look just right you can catch the glimpse of some animals. On the other hand the longer trip to the Rose Garden is better, and a relaxing ride. more

What a great place!! 8/20/2005

The Oregon Zoo is a great place to visit. There are always good exhibits that come and go, my favorite being the Butterfly exhibit. Our family also really enjoys the zoo lights that they have during the holiday season. It is a one of a kind experience for little kids. They also have great camps and classes for older kids. Another great thing is when you can camp at the zoo, or go to concerts. There is always something unique going on. The Oregon Zoo is also one of the world’s largest elephant breeding facilities. My only complaint is the layout of the zoo. It’s not exactly stroller friendly. Personally I prefer using a wagon because then the kids can jump in and out as needed. Try taking the max train to the zoo to save on gas and parking. more

Great zoo in a nice, green park 8/20/2005

The Oregon Zoo is a great place to spend a full day. The animals are housed in roomy enclosures that offer great visibility. The grounds of the zoo are green and lush, and this would be a great place to bring a picnic in nice weather. There is a enough to see and do that a full day can be spent here, and the visit will be enjoyed by everyone of all ages. more
