Hold on to Your Wallet 6/10/2007

As a bath afficionado, I was looking forward to trying my first banya. I left OKEANOS very disappointed. On the phone, management was super friendly, promising free vodka shots after the treatment. I made a reservation for the plotza treatment for myself and several friends and was told it would take 30 to 40 minutes per person. Although the web site advertizes that each guest receives a "heated wrap" of Russian grains and spices on arrival, no such welcoming gesture was offered. On the positive side, the facilities are clean and the plotza was administered by a friendly and competant young "plotza master" named Sam. However, the first plotza lasted only 20 -25 minutes. This was not so bad but in the middle of the second, the manager stuck her head in and said something in Russian that sounded like, "Hurry up! The next customers are coming!." The treatment ended soon after. The final person in our group to receive a plotza got a very abbreviated version - 10 minutes or so. After the bath we were led to a seating area in our robes and offered refreshments. We chose tea and juice and were also given some fruit. Vodka shots were not offered. When it came time to pay, we were charged for the plotza and then told we would be charged $50 per person on top of that for the use of the banya. This brochure lists a " half-day use" fee of $90 for those who don't book treatments. The website doesn't mention this at all except under "current promotions" that says half-day use is reduced to $50. I assume this was the justification for the charge, although we had each booked a treatment. Needless to say, the juice and tea were not complementary although there is no menu or sign with prices. There is an anxiety about money at OKEANOS. They may be on the verge of bankruptcy or they may be trying to make a minimum amount from every client. Either way, the lack of transparency about the cost of services leaves a bad taste. Pros: clean and nice facilities Cons: unprofessional management more

Journey into the heart of the ocean as you leave the cares and worries of Nyc far, far, behind and enter a traditional yet luxurious russian bathhouse. The ultimate in a spa experience! 8/26/2006

The very distinctive design with particular attention to detail creates a most tranquil environment for this rather unique spa. You are left infused with a sense of tranquility and relaxation. The staff is experienced and professional and take exceptional care of their guests and catering to individual needs. Definitely worth a visit!! Pros: ambiance, service, molton brown products more

A civilized place to go relax 8/6/2006

I usually do not write reviews, but this Spa-Banya is worth experiencing. I went there without any expectations and left quite impressed. It is an excellent place to treat oneself for a sport-massage or a spa-treatment. Its atmosphere is elegant and soothing; the staff is very polite and ever so attentive. This urban oasis is a great location to go recuperate and probably one of the most peaceful places in the city to pamper oneself -- either alone or with friends and colleagues. The option to have vodka and caviar afterwards is ever so civilized and quite fun. Pros: low-key and elegant more

Unparalleled banya and rapturous massage 8/4/2006

My experience at Okeanos was utter bliss. My wife and I were catered to by the friendly and hospitable staff. The banya (steam and sauna) are the best anywhere, and the platza treatment, a totally unique and exotic experience, had me completely relaxed and ready for my mind-blowing massage. My massage therapist, Sam, masterfully kneaded and stretched my body. By the time my massage was over I felt like brand new and was half asleep/half in euphoric trance. Rapture does not even begin to describe it. My wife had the same caliber of service with her massage therapist Margarita and loved it just as much. She also tried the venik massage or platza and was thrilled by it. It is like a full body massage performed with soft lush leaves in the steamy sauna room until the skin is glowing and completely rejuvenated. Wow, I could go on forever reliving my experience; all in all this is one New York hot spot youll be sorry you missed. Pros: ambience, service, clean more

Greates Idea for a Date 7/27/2006

Okeanos is classy, quiet, simple and yet sophisticated. Everything from the elegant interior design to the attentive and helpful staff makes you relaxed and comfortable. The best thing about Okeanos is that it is great for both men and women. Because the place does not have the usual pretensions spa atmosphere that makes guys uncomfortable, it works perfectly for everyone. I went there with my boyfriend for a spa experience and it turned into something better the best date. We took the famous banya treatment followed by massages which is the perfect combination. Then, we relaxed at Okeanos cozy bar and had a great meal delivered from Petrossian with caviar, Russian blintzes and vodka. It could have not been any better! Also, on a practical side, Okeanos is a clean and quiet place fresh towels and bathrobes, great product lines (Molton Brown and Comfort Zone), professional staff and comfortable waiting areas. Overall the best experience ever! One remark although sauna and lounge area are co ed, a couples massage room would have been a plus. Pros: Atmosphere, treatments and staff Cons: no couples’ massage room more

WONDERFUL experience! 7/9/2006

I went here with my boyfriend for a relaxing day and it was a VERY enjoyable experience. My boyfriend had never been to a spa, or a banya, and I thought he would feel uncomfortable. But, the beauty of Okeanos is that it is a male oriented spa, but at the same time is a serene and enjoyable experience for both sexes. The spa was decorated in beautiful mosaic tiles, mostly blue, making you feel like you are in an ocean. We started with a platza treatment which was wonderful, really makes your skin breathe! After our Platza we went into separate rooms for our massage. My boyfriend got a Russian sports massage and I got the invigorating okeanos massage. Both satisfactory and enjoyable. I recommend taking a shot of vodka after your massage for a really refreshing and authentically Russian experience Molton Brown products smell wonderful. While I myself dont use heavily scented products they would make a nice gift! Staff is extremely friendly and hospitable. All in all we spent around 4 hours at Okeanos, enjoying the treatments, dry heat and steam saunas! Ive already recommended the spa to a couple of people and plan on sending my parents there as well. ONE CON did not like how my masseuse tried to sell extra massage services during the massage. I hope its not a standard practice. Pros: Ambience, Staff, Services more

  • "First Caviar & Vodka, then leggy Slavic Supermodels. Now, the hot Russian import in Manhattan is Okeanos Club Spa. Tucked away on East 51st Street, 'it feels like a swank cruise ship.' --Conde Nast Traveler, 2006

Okeanos brings the best of traditional Russian spa therapies to Manhattan but adds a modern and worldly spin. More than just a spa, Okeanos is a destination where one can de-stress in simple and elegant style. Conceived in the spirit of the Tsars, Okeanos offers Banya, the Russian steam sauna and Platza, the invigorating touch of steam-softened birch leaves on banya-warmed skin (the favorite treatment of the Russian players for the New York Rangers). They also offer massages, facials, body treatments, nails, barber services and a luxurious lounge area with a bar and TVs. Molton Brown & Comfort Zone are among the luxury brands offered in treatments.

Editorial
  • In Short
This masculine spa captures the spirit of Russian bathhouses, where businessmen traditionally did much of their dealing. Encouraged to come with company, clients first unwind in the lounge, which is designed like a sunny cruise ship deck with a vodka- and caviar-packed bar and wavy walls beyond. Masters perform traditional platza treatments (body-brushing with softened birch leaves) in the "banya," or Russian steam sauna. An on-site barber and sports massages round out the kingly offerings.
