Never even knew it was there! 5/7/2006

During the Seattle Maritime Festival this weekend, we stopped by the Odyssey Museum down on pier 66. I never knew it was even there! It was free that particular day, so we stopped in and looked around. They had lots of exhibits and activities for the kids. One was a virtual kayak experience. Others included movies, fish recognition and other fun things. Make sure you look in the oysters along some of the walls for a special treat for your little ones! more

interesting place 8/21/2005

Seattle is a city of water. So it's not surprising to see this interactive promotion for modern fishing and shipping. It is located at the end of the Seattle waterfront. The target audience is kids. There are more than 40 hands-on exhibits highlighting Seattle's modern working waterfront and its links to the sea. Exhibits include a kid-size fishing boat, (Your kids will love it!) a virtual kayak trip through the Puget Sound, and a live radar center that allows you to track the movement of vessels in Elliott Bay. Cool! In another exhibit, you get to use a simulated crane to practice loading a scale model of a cargo ship. What an unique experience! more

Caught in a Catch-22 8/17/2005

So my kids always enjoyed going to the Maritime Discovery Center, but there were never very many other visitors around. Nice for us, not crowded, no jostling—bad for the museum. So they cut back their hours to 11-3, Tuesday to Saturday. Not very convenient for us so we won’t be renewing our annual membership. So here’s the Catch-22: More hours=higher staffing costs. Less hours=less staffing costs and even less visitors, in my opinion. Oh ya, the exhibits are entertaining for kids and adults. A lot of hands on maritime industry stuff. Nuff said. more
