Editorial review from Citysearch 2/13/2013

The food is decent but the owner is the slime of the earth. My brother waited tables there until the owner fired him for visiting our dying mother too often. This was after he gave my brother permission to take leave to visit her. Owners like that don't deserve your patronage. more

Fabulous Steaks 9/20/2011

We have been to Oba 3 times now, and every Filet was savory and amazing. They change the preperation frequently so we had different styles each time which makes it easy to go back and see what's next. The staff are friendly and know the menu inside and out. You do want reservations a week or so ahead of time, but if you don't mind the Bar area, you can walk-in and hope for a table there too. Love it! more

Good Happy Hour 6/14/2011

I have mixed feelings about Oba. Some of it was very tasty. Some not so much. The table made guacamole really is worth the money but my fish tasted a little old (and by a little, I mean as in ""a little pregnant"") and my drink could have used a little less sugar. But it's a hopping place and I wouldn't mind trying it again (just probably sticking to beer and things that have a longer shelf life than fish). more

Great food. Odd experience. 5/27/2011

The good news is that the food is as tasty as ever. The bad news is that the service was confused at best. 2 of us showed up on a Friday night at 8:45 and wanted to sit in the dining room so we could converse and avoid the loud music and crowd in the bar. We were sat at a booth and immediately made aware by our waiter that we were clearly her last table and were interfering with her plans to get done with work. At first we only ordered a few things and she was clearly irritated that we weren't spending more money so she avoided our table. Our water glasses were always empty and we had to order a second round of drinks from someone that seemed to be a manager. The soup came but we had no spoons. Thankfully the food runner noticed (with a sigh that said he was irritated with the server) and provided us with some. Once we realized we were still hungry and ordered more food and one more drink from a busser, then our waiter was suddenly *very* interested in our table, as our bill kept climbing. The last five minutes of our meal we received incredible service. It's too bad that we were left high and dry for the previous hour, having to flag her or anyone down for everything we wanted or needed. more

yummmy food and drinks 4/8/2011

LOVED the passion fruit mojito's... I can't wait to go back and have another. The food was also very good. Our server was great and not snuddy (which you can get sometimes in the pearl) more

Cant wait to go back 3/14/2011

The food was soooo good. My GF & I ordered a grande order of tostones with beef carnitas. Its so flavorfull & the meat is tender & juicy. The meal pictured on their site, the vaca frita, was another dish we ordered. That was really good too. Unique flavor & the meat was also very tender. & the sweet potato crispys on top were great too. We also ordered the puerto rican shrimp fried rice which was also delicious. The food was so good that even though we were full half way through we couldnt stop eating =) And it was all gluten free!!! The atmosphere was nice too. Bright colors, upbeat music & nice decor added to the experience. Cant wait to go back. PS zaphourDOTcom has a great coupon for OBA for a free entree with the purchase of another! more

Not worth the crowds 2/20/2011

No doubt, the food is great. But last night, we sat around for 30 minutes and never were seated - despite having made reservations. We were told, ""sorry, people just aren't leaving."" That kind of excuse just isn't good enough. We will go back, probably, but not any time soon. more

New Years at Oba 1/14/2011

I have been to Oba several times and love their latin inspired menu and drinks. This year my friends and I decided to ring in the new year at Oba and it was quite a disapointment. The drink menu was great but service from the kitchen was less than expected. My husband ordered a 5 corse selection and only received 3 of the corses. The atmosphere was extreemly loud and it was difficult to hear those at my own table. I would generally recomend Oba, but they have proven to be inconsistent. more

Love this place. Had a great time. more

Great Latin Food 9/27/2010

Oba features a fun, artsy, and trendy dining room. Don't expect to find any traditional cuban or caribbean dishes here but rather entrees that have been influenced by the islands and are sometimes reinventions of the original. Still, you're in for some culinary fun. We started with some creative cocktails and the very tasty arepas. We also tried the Cuban Pulled Flank Steak. It was good. The wine list is interesting and fairly priced. The service was excellent. more

Atmosphere fantabulous 6/26/2010

We have been frequent patrons for the past few years, and each and every time enjoy ourselves throughly. The service is good and the drinks are always better than I recall them being the time before. Pros: great food and drinks Cons: parking more

Consistently Good Experience! 2/13/2010

We frequent Oba and have always had a consistently good experience! Service staff is friendly and attentive. We like the Caesar Salad(the best in town), Coyotas and Burger. Their margaritas are tasty, too! Our only complaint would be the constant mariachi-type music... it's rather grating! They do have good take-out service. Pros: Food and drink are good! Cons: Mariachi music more

Latino food rocks 1/11/2010

All in all this place is worth eating at. I like going for happy hour which helps my savings account. If you are looking for consistency and latin food visit Oba. Pros: Great food Cons: A little on the pricey side for what you get. more

Fantastic Service - stops there! 12/25/2009

I love to eat and I love to eat out. Don't even mind paying for fantastic food experiences. First time at Obas in Portland, Oregon. I usually don't comment alot on the service, but our waiter was fabulous - polite, friendly, and knew a ton about the menu/wines, etc. I wanted to hire him for my business. But then the food came and I must say it was a disappointment. Maybe I was just unlucky that evening, but it seemed like the owner was trying to offer an interesting meal - charge a lot for it and it just didn't happen. The interesting part that is. Like I said, I don't mind paying, but the price did not match the cuisine in this case. Seems like more and more restaurants are offering a dish with aninteresting name and overpricing it to make it seem ""exotic"". Maybe I will try it again. Like I said, maybe just unlucky that evening. Pros: Unmatched service Cons: Menu and drinks more

Mmmmmmmmm! 11/12/2009

The food is out of this world! The service is top notch, too. Worth the drive and the expense. We go whenever we get the chance. Love it! Pros: Atmosphere more

Very Consistant 10/16/2009

We frequent Oba and find the food always consistant that is why we are repeat customers. The Chef is imaginative, the flavors are amazing that he is able to blend together its a feast for the eyes as well as the palate . It is still the best restaurant in Portland in my opinion. Pros: Great service and creative food Cons: Bar is a bit noisy but rocking more

Original and unpredictable 9/14/2009

The first time we went to Oba, we had a three-course meal that was pretty good-- but the service was inattentive and bordering on rude. The second time we went was amazing. We ordered appetizers (the gazpacho was so unique and refreshing on a hot summer day) and drinks. Their main room was closed for an event, so we sat in the crowded bar. We had no trouble finding a quaint window seat; when we were asked to move to accommodate a 10-top, we did so gladly. When we were asked to move a second time, our $60+ bill (for two people) was taken care of by management! Now that's what I call good service. Pros: Very original menu, good dinner packages Cons: Lack of parking, erratic waitstaff more

Disappointing 7/17/2009

This restaurant is hyped as one of the best in Portland, but I found it to be below average and way overpriced. The best thing that could be said about the food is that it's ""interesting"". However, in this case ""interesting"" doesn't translate into ""good"". Also, we felt rushed by our server during the meal. Maybe I'm just not hip enough to get this place, but I wasn't impressed. Cons: not as good as the hype more

Nice happy hour! 6/21/2009

Sunday happy hour -- what could be better?! We'd not been to Oba before, so thought this would be a great way to sample before we commit to the pricy restaurant, especially after reading some of the reviews here. We have no complaints! The room was comfortable and pleasant; our waitress was sunny, helpful and pretty quick; the drinks were fabulous, and the food was very, very good. The caesar salad wasn't what we were expecting, but tasty; coconut shrimp delicious (ok, maybe a little heavy on the sweet sauce, but shrimp were cook perfectly); the tostada sort of dish was FABULOUS; and a deep fried something with beef was very tasty. We'll definitely go back. Tip: the people beside us had the $7 happy hour burgers, and they looked great! Pros: Great happy hour! Cons: Will get back to you when I think of any more
