Best little Italian place in Culver City 10/17/2008

My husband and I frequent this great restaurant at least twice a month. We enjoy the food, service and wine. Their chicken fettuccini is my husban's favorite and I enjoy the seafood angel hair pasta, however, just about everything is good on the menu--its like eating homemade. The staff is very friendly and accommodating--they treat you like you are family. If you ever want to eat great Italian food, we strongly recommend you try this restaurant. Good eats! Pros: Great food, good service Cons: small place more

Great food and really attentive service. 3/3/2008

I am a typical LA person. I realized the only time I ever write comments here is when I receive a really bad service and don't utilize this to praise anyone or any business. It's all going to change today! I would like to write here that I love this restaurant! I love it! They consistently provide great food and great service. Actually, their service seem to improve with time. My last trip there was significantly better than my first or my second trip there. I give them a solid A. I depend on this place when I want to take someone to a nice and a reasonable Italian place. The only con is that it's very noisy. I think it's from the structure of this place. Pros: Great food and service. Service that gets better with time. Cons: slightly noisy. more

hearty Italian food! 2/4/2008

We were delighted to find this tiny, friendly Italian restaurant in the heart of Culver City. Excellent soup (including a ""green"" minestrone with pesto instead of tomato and a flavorful mushroom, though there were two other vegetable choices) and delicious pasta choices with large portions. I had the special - a fresh spinach fettucine with lightly sauteed fresh vegetables including fresh tomatoes instead of a sauce, and about 10 perfectly cooked shrimp. The fresh rosemary bread and the dipping sauce (a gremolata with olive oil, vinegar, olives, and what tasted like fresh oregano) is also tasty and we scarfed it down. The tiramisu is heavy on the mascarpone, but good and we shared it. We had bottled water--a still Italian brand--and did not try the wine list. They serve you a complimentary brushcetta with tapenade when you sit down. Pros: parking nearby; homestyle fresh and traditional Italian food; friendly service Cons: small more

Big attitude, little taste 1/3/2008

Extremely unpleasant dining experience. The staff and the owner were snootier than those at any Hollywood club I have ever been to. It has been my experience that most Italian restaurants are very accommodating with their menus, willing to change a sauce here, add an ingredient there, as requested. Not so at this restaurant. To the contrary, we were treated with great hostility just for asking! They offer a gnocchi with 3 sauce choices and my mother had never tried one of the sauces so she asked if she could have her order just divided into 2 portions, with a different sauce on each half. First the waiter just flat out said no and when we asked why, she would not answer and instead suggested we take it up with the owner, which we did. The owner then informed us they'd do it, but they would charge $2.50 more to do it that way (they actually charged us $3). When I asked why it was an extra charge to just take the same portion and divide it in halves, she replied ""because this is a business."" Seriously. When pressed, she changed her answer and insisted that if they split the dish in halves, they would have to make larger portions (why is unclear). However, when the dish came out the portions were extremely small, so I cannot even imagine how small the alleged normal portion is. The upshot is, this restaurant will work with you, but you have to be willing to put up with a lot of attitude and ridiculous extra charges. And in the end, all of the food was barely mediocre, at best. Frozen raviolis from the grocery store are better than the ones that I got at this restaurant, which had almost no filling in them at all. Oh, and don't bother ordering a glass of the house wine. It costs as much as a glass of medium-high level wine at any other decent restaurant. Frankly, in a town that is continuing to blossom every week with new, innovative, delicious, and fun restaurants, there is simply no reason to go to this restaurant for bland food and a bad attitude. Pros: Practically empty, so no wait Cons: Bad attitude, food more

Great Ambiance, Great Deal! 12/18/2006

This place is a hidden treasure. Their pastas are delicious, the meat sauce is wonderful - not to mention the free bread. This is a great place to go for a casual dinner. Pros: ambiance, value more

Cute little Italian place 11/21/2006

Walking inside, Novecento has but one long corridor of a dining room but with cute tables. Parties of more than 4 feel cramped. Their food is very good if not a touch on the greasy side. My penne arrabiata has been flavorful and their chicken tender and moist. Their bread with oils is very good and I'd gladly come back just for their lemonade! more

bad management- never got seated 11/8/2006

My husband and I decided to give Novecento a try since it looked so cute and we love Italian food. They were clearly having a busy night when we went, but we were willing to go with the first come, first served seating. There was no list, no hostess stand, no waiting area, and no one in charge of seating, but we were willing to wait it out. After standing awkwardly by the door for about half an hour during which time one couple ahead of us got a table, a party of five showed up just as a family of five left, and they were immediately seated! That is just bad service. We might as well have been invisible. A lady who was clearly the manager/owner pointedly ignored us the whole time we were there. We finally left after grabbing a waiter and telling him to notify whoever was in charge that that is no way to run a business. The other reviews I read here say the food is good, but the management didn't have the courtesy to make us feel welcome enough to wait around longer and give it a try. Pros: very cute, easy parking because of great Culver City parking structures Cons: bad management, very disorganized during busy times more

Best Italian Restaurant in LA 7/6/2006

I've been going to Novecento for about 8 years now and same friendly people work there ever since. The place is very cute and cozy, also romantic in the evening. Both food and service has been consistently excellent, Ive never had a bad experience there. Their fresh lemonade is great, my favorite is the spinach salad, but you can only get that during lunch time. Everything Ive ever tasted there have been great. Tiramisu is great, too! By far, my favorite restaurant in LA. Highly recommend to anyone! Pros: Great food, atmosphere, service Cons: Small restaurant, not for a large group more

Yet another Culver City gem 3/15/2005

Been going here for years. It's Italian food like you'd get in Italy, not in 1950s middle America. Definitely get the special appetizer salad that your server tells you about. It always has compelling flavor combinations and is always a little bit different. In fact, the specials your server rattles off (pay close attention and you'll get it all, even with the heavy, charming accents) are usually great. Among my faves: homemade gnocci with your choice of sauce, any of the chicken or fish entrees. At Christmas time, look for the tree suspended upside-down from the ceiling. Pros: appetizer salad, service is great, homemade gnocci Cons: heavy accents more

Great Dining 10/15/2004

My husband and i looove this new treasure of a restaurant. After our first time there we have kept going back almost every week. Their service is good and friendly, the food is yummy, and the free starters are just as good, so if you are starving and cant wait for your appetizer to come you will be ok! the bruchetta is great! the ambience is romantic and cozy. A great find in culver city. Pros: ambience, food, service more
