Honest, reliable, knowlegable vet! 10/14/2011

Dr. Spellman took good care of my cat for 14 years and I'm now taking my newly adopted dog to him. He has always been straight forward in his approach and doesn't try to do any unnecessary tests to keep costs down. We just adopted a 2 year-old miniature schnauzer about a month ago. Within 2 weeks she became very ill. We had taken her to a vet that was about 10 min from our house. The vet suspected a pancreatic issue but that was ruled out and $700 later the vet still couldn't diagnose her and was recommending an MRI and possible exploratory surgery. I finally did what I should have in the first place and drove the longer distance to Dr. Spellman. He did say that based on the way she presented that he would have initially thought it was a pancreatic issue, too. However, with that ruled out, he was able to re-evaluate and diagnose her with a back injury. Now with two weeks of bed rest (read being crated) she is as good as new. He is very experienced and knows what he is doing. I recommend him to anyone that is needing a new vet. more

Great Vet! 10/12/2010

My husband & I have been taking our pets to Dr. Spellman for over 20 years. We have always had up front and honest service from Dr. Spellman and his staff. He has even had to put down two of our beloved Golden Retrievers over the years (due to old age/cancer) and was so very kind and sensitive to our heartbreak. We will continue to take our precious Goldens to Dr. Spellman until he retires. We even drive farther to see Dr. Spellman, even though we have vet clinics closer to home. more

Wish we found yall sooner! 2/27/2010

Our newly adopted rescue has been to NLVC MULTIPLE times in the past couple months. Dr Spellman is GREAT with our dog and takes his time talking to you about whats going on. This clinic NEVER tried to charge us for unnecessary treatments or testing! Dr Spellman and his staff were upfront about the costs of everything and it was obvious they really cared. They even gave us a smaller dose of medication to hold us over a couple days till we got paid again (we had JUST spent almost $500 taking him to a "pet hospital" less than a week before for treatments Dr Spellman had to fix!). I highly recommend this clinic and am happy to pay for the reasonably priced services provided by this amazing team! Chingo will never go anywhere else again. more

If you can't afford a pet.. 2/1/2010

Each of you who has criticized this Vet for being a money-grabber are uneducated, selfish, money-grabbers yourselves. The Vet Clinics are a BUSINESS! They are not the welfare office there to give you something for free or on credit. I bet you sit at the human emergency room for hours to get treated for an ailment that would take 10 minutes to treat 3 weeks ago if you were willing to take responsibility for your own health. Your pets are just that YOURS! If you don't like your Vet get a new one but whining about the cost is proof that you want someone else to take on responsibilities that are yours and only yours. If you can't afford a pet, don't adopt one. more

North Lamar Veterinary Clinic DOES NOT CARE FOR ANIMALS ONLY $ 8/28/2009

Took my cat in three months ago. Vet had to run $300 worth of test to tell me something that I already knew. My cat had an urinary tract infection and his kidneys were not working properly. Learned how to give subcutaneous fluids. Cat did well for about three mos. Now has started to show signs again. Called the vet to purchase the fluid and needles. He would not let me until he ran more tests again. I don't have the money and told him so. He was unwavering. I told him I guess I will have to watch my cat die.\r \r If he truly cared for animals, he would let me buy the fluids or write me a prescription so that I could buy them cheaper elsewhere.\r \r HE IS DEFINITELY IN IT FOR THE MONEY! more

No other Vet like him and his staff 4/20/2009

My cat accidentally licked a flea and tick medicine that I bought over the counter and went into a full blown seizure. I rushed him to a 24 hour hospital and they wanted over 1000.00 just to treat him or was going to put him to sleep. I got a couple injections there that cost over 200.00 just to get him to make it until the morning. I took him to Dr. Spellman the very next morning and he did miracles on my baby. Within 24 hours, Sugar was full of spirit and as beautiful as ever. He saved his life and I am forever grateful for everything he did. He called several times to check on Sugar throughout the day - that is how personal and caring he is. Truly amazing. Thank you again Dr. Spellman and your staff. We adore you. more

thorough, yet kind considerate to your checkbook :) 9/22/2008

being new to austin, i was a bit apprehensive as to who i would trust with my dog. after calling several different facilities, dr. spellman's friendly staff and prices brought me in. today was my first visit with him. i REALLY appreciated him explaining several preventative measures i'd not thought of. he was kind to bring them to my attention now, and under the same exam fee- as to not pay a lot more in the future. i feel GREAT about the steps i took to ensure my dog's health. i'll be sure to be a regular there. check him out! more

From the Heart 8/28/2008

Last year I bought a miniature dachshund for my daughter for Christmas.. It had been years since we had to take care of a puppy. My daughter loved this puppy so much. One day when she was at school the puppy got sick. I took the puppy to several clinic crying frantically and all they wanted was money to treat the puppy for parvo. My last hope I called Dr. Spellman and he told me to bring the puppy in and he would help us. Arie will soon be 2 years old and is happy and healthy thanks to Dr. Spellman and his staff. We love and appreciate you sooooo much. more

The Best Vet 7/8/2008

My german shepard Bruno almost died as a puppy and another vet I used to see in Round Rock wanted to put him down after we refuse to pay 1800 on top of 500 we spent to have him looked at & tested. So we found Dr. Spellman and he worked with us because we were not prepared to spend that much money after getting Bruno. He showed us how to take care of him at home & gave us supplies to do so. I have a beautiful tan & black 100 lbs, 1 year old German Shepard today and he still sees vet Spellman for check ups today. Dr. Spellman is all about caring for animals. I have 2 dogs & 2 cats and they all see him!! more

We highly recommend this vet. 5/7/2008

Dr. Spellman has taken care of our 8 year old Black Lab since he was only weeks old. We have found him to be very knowledgable, compassionate and professional. Our dog loves going there and is always very happy to see the doc. more

Dr. Spellman is fantastic! 5/6/2008

Dr. Spellman first took care of my Afghan back in the early 80's. She then was diagnosed with Lukemia and he would call every evening to see how we were both doing. When it was time for her to be put down, he was as sad as I was. He has taken great care of all my other animals and is just compasionate and love animals. Plus, he's got a great dry wit about him. I highly recommend him and think he' awesome! more

many years of service 3/5/2008

I don't know the particulars of the other respondent, but I can say without reservation that Dr. Spellman is a superb vet. He saved my dog's life as a puppy when she had Parvo, and showed me how to keep her alive in the week or so when she was fighting the disease. I had to take her home because I couldn't afford to pay to keep her in the Vet 's care during her recovery, and he gave me detailed instructions and the required medicine and let me take her home. I don't think that shows a proclivity to being money hungry... it shows he understands that people have different budgets, and that the animal's life is what is important. I have been taking my dog to him for over 12 years since, and she has been healthy and well cared for. If he suggests something I can't afford, he will understand and try to find a cheaper solution. However, any merchant wants to get paid for his services...just as any person who works for a living does. more

This vet definitely does it for the money. 2/10/2008

I am not sure the vet is competent or not, but I know the first thing the vet does is to make sure you pay the bill before anything is done. I have seen so many vets, but this one is unique. He seems to think people are out to cheat him. more
