After a rainy wedding, lots of mud and a handful of scuffs, I thought my boots were done. Unbelievably, these guys made my shoes look like new again!

This store should be called Snob Hill. I purchased a pair of shoes that I was very excited about. After making the purchase, the salesperson informed my they were having a sale the next week. Great, I thought, maybe the shoes I bought will be on sale, and I can return them for a discount. The salesperson informed me they have a 30 day return policy for unworn items. I left my shoes in their box and returned a week later. Sure enough, the shoes I purchased were on sale for 20% off. I tried to return them and purchase them at the discount, but the salesperson said she could not do this. I was surprised, as this is pretty standard practice at most businesses. Moreover, their return policy is for exchange or store credit only, so once you make the purchase, they have you. The salesperson refused to budge. I would much rather support small, local businesses than large chains or internet companies. But, I will not do business with Nob Hill Shoes unless they improve their customer service. Incidentally, I could have purchased the same shoes at zappos or at REI and wish I had. more

Store policies not good for visitors to Portland 9/30/2007

On a birthday surprise weekend in Portland a friend and I stopped in Nob Hill Shoes (we live about 250 miles away). He made a significant purchase and I made a purchase as well (items that were packaged so they couldn't be tried on beforehand). Unfortunately the "one size fits all" items I purchased didn't fit me, it happens. We traveled back to the Nob Hill Shoes the next day and only then realized the [posted] store policy is a store credit, no refunds. We tried to appeal to the cashier that a store credit isn't something we could take advantage of as I have no idea when/if we'll get back to this area. She could only issue a store credit and indicated we'd have to speak to a manager on Monday. The next day, back home, I called to appeal to the manager/owner regarding a refund. She remained adamant that "this is the store policy and I can't [won't] change it". I was a bit taken aback by the patronizing attitude of the entire conversation, especially telling me "what, you're never coming back to Portland!?" as though that was a ridiculous statement on my part to say I didn't know when or if I'd be back in the area again any time soon. I got the sense this wasn't the first time the owner has had this conversation with someone from out of town. Bottom line is this, I have no product and Nob Hill Shoe Co. has the $$. Neither of the two employees I spoke with regarding sizing mentioned or pointed out the store policy to me ... that would have been a better service all around. So if you're from out of town, be really SURE that your purchase is EXACTLY what you want/expect. This was my first trip to Portland and I must say it put a damper on what was a truly nice weekend. Not recommended for out of town shoppers. Pros: Location Cons: Store return policy, not recommended for out of towners more

In store credit returns only. 6/27/2007

Nob Hill Shoes use to be a great small business; the service was no nonsense. They use to advertise that they cleaned your shoes for their lifetime and they did fantastic repair jobs. That is why I was a patron. My recent trip to Nob Hill was highlighted with the sales person asking my brother in-law if he want to "try" a size that was at least 4 sizes off. Ummm...why? Not a good place for out-of towners, since they only take returns for in store credit. P.S. The prices are cheaper and the sales people are much nicer at other places. I am saddened to see another Portland business go to the dark side. Cons: parking, return policy more
