Best

My wife friend and I were just looking for a warm drink after visiting the Cloisters, when we stumbled upon this beautiful cottage in the woods restaurant. It was snowing outside ...

Worst

Our Service Experience: Pros: Beautiful location in Fort Tryon Park Cons: Lousy service

Beware 2/4/2012

Worse than 1 star but there is no option for that. Be very very careful and better not to go. The menu is not clear regarding contents within the various sauces and I suffered a major food allergy reaction to lobster that was in one of the sauces after having asked the server numerous times what was in the sauce and after mentioning to him that I was allergic to shellfish. My reaction almost put me in the E.R. but I have the meds at home and was able to ride it out with the help of family. The chef, servers and managers were not helpful as I attempted to explain to them what was happening to me and instead actually questioned me as to whether I had been clear re; my allergies and even after I said yes they were defending their recipes, staff etc. I then attempted to simply implore then to add info, regarding shellfish to their menu. Best stay away. more

The people are RUDE! 9/6/2011

In the past, for this concession the quality was high but the approach was relaxed and casual. That has changed. The waitstaff is rude and uncouth. They seem snobbish and somehow affect a kind of disdain for their customers. Someone actually rolled their eyes at me. How strange. Since when did working at a restaurant become justification for treating people rudely. I would avoid this place if you are looking for a pleasant vibe. more

almost excellent 10/24/2009

This place just misses the mark - most things are absolutely wonderful - the place itself is simple, historic and warm. The bartender was superb as was our waiter in the dining room. Pros: beautiful location, great service Cons: tacky paper covering fabric cloth - on a Friday night!! more

Best New Years Experience 1/1/2009

My wife friend and I were just looking for a warm drink after visiting the Cloisters, when we stumbled upon this beautiful cottage in the woods restaurant. It was snowing outside and we had hot chocolate on the mind. Boy did we stumble into the right place. Best hot chocolate I have ever had-with a wee bit of peppermint liquor in mine. They actually have a hot chocolate menu with a variety of flavors. Pros: Woodland setting more

Great location 9/27/2008

Beautiful setting, great food, and attentive service. I was pleasantly surprised to find this gem in Upper Manhattan. My boyfriend and I arrived 30 minutes early for our dinner reservation and had a drink at the restaurant bar. New Leaf has a great selection of wine. I had the duck and it was cooked perfectly. The food was great but I fell in love with New Leaf for the ambience. It is a romantic cozy restaurant in the middle of the park. more

This restaurant is a joke 12/27/2007

Yeah, the location is nice and the ambience (if you can get a seat inside of the restaurant) is rustic/charming. But the majority of people, including our group, get seated outside in a big white plastic tent, which is such a drag. Expectations were high as our group loves fine dining. Unfortunately this restaurant has so many bad things going for it. The menu is limited, boring. Our waitress/model took forever to serve us, literally 15 min? in the tent? waiting for a menu. I did not like the side dish my entree so I asked for something else and was told flatly that substitutions are not allowed. If I wanted a different side I would have to pay an extra $8 bucks! Why? I have no idea because when the food arrived my side dish (a plop of cold mashed potatoes) came on a separate plate anyway. My meal looked like a upscale TV dinner. We paid through the nose for a mediocre meal and horrible service. You live, you learn. Pros: Love Fort Tryon Park Cons: Pretty much everything else more

Horribe Service - Don't Go. 7/24/2007

This past Sunday, July 22nd my friend and I stopped by New Leaf Cafe for brunch at about 2:30. The restaurant was full so we sat at the bar. The tall blond bartender never bothered to greet us. After 10 min of ignoring us I had to ask the waiter walking by to please get his attention. I asked for a ginger mojito and the bartender curtly replied, ""No ginger."" and literally turned and walked away. No explanation or second choice was given whatsoever. I then had to wave my hand in the air to ask for two simple beers. The bartender then raised his voice at me and said ""Don't do that!"" to which I responded ""I've been trying to get your attention."" The bartender rudely said, ""Well, you damn well got it."" I replied, ""Finally."" Pros: Ambience and Food Cons: Lack of professionalism and very poor customer service. more

Delicious meal, beautiful setting 5/22/2007

Had a wonderful birthday dinner here recently in this restaurant nestled within lovely Fort Tryon Park. Because the setting is so beautiful, they will open all the windows on a nice day, even if it's not necessarily warm out, so be prepared if you're the type who gets chilly (like me). Everything was yummy here, from the bread to the risotto cakes to dessert. The staff was very friendly & service was great until later in our meal, when things got busier. My Irish coffee took about 25 minutes to get to me...we asked about it more than once but by then the bar was more hectic than it had been earlier & our waiter had more tables. The drink was on the house & both the manager & waiter offered sincere apologies. A very nice restaurant - great food & locale - & since we live in Washington Hts., we hope this place thrives for a long time. But I must admit, our experience was pleasant but not utterly stellar. Pros: Beautiful location, great food (risotto cakes, dessert) Cons: After dinner drink took 25 minutes to receive more

A must-go 1/19/2007

It was great! New Leaf Cafe is in a wonderful setting hidden in the last natural forest in NYC, Fort Tryon Park. I've been there several times over the summer during all the times I visited the Cloisters and I was eager to go there during the winter (but c'mon, it's hardly winter lately, huh! :) Pros: Setting, service, food, drink selection Cons: prices more

Worst Service Ever 1/2/2007

Our Service Experience: Pros: Beautiful location in Fort Tryon Park Cons: Lousy service more

Beg To Differ 7/17/2006

Unfortunately for being such a good looking restaurant in a beautiful location it fails to deliver. Nothing about the menue struck me. The service was terrible. We waited about 15 min. at the door for a hostess to show up than 45 minutes for a table. Our waiter didn't greet us until about 20 minutes and by that time we had enough...we walked out. will never go back again. more

Success sometimes is bad 5/27/2006

Here is a restaurant that having reached a nice level of success is now becoming more and more complacent and the service is becoming so casual to the point of being rude. Last night we (a group of 6) went for dinner and were seated at 8:25 pm.At 9:00 pm we were asked what we'd like to drink, at 9:25 we received the drinks, and at 9:30 the menus. by 9:45 we received a bun and a bit of butter, and by 10:25 we were served dinner. And the food was cold . All of this for $198.00 per couple! Good thing we were enjoying each other's company. I don't know how soon I will go back to the New Leaf Cafe'. more

Worth the while... if you can get in 2/13/2006

Having dined at New Leaf on several ocassions for different meals, I can firmly state both the food and service are above par. The brunch, as many have mentioned, is particularly good. Be careful, however, to make reservations and confirm they will be honored the day of your visit. To be frank, the management seems inept when it comes to keeping records of their future guests. On more than one ocassion I've opted for another restaurant in the area because they didn't honor my reservation (or couldn't seat me for another half hour past my reservation time. What would be the point of having a reservation?). I've also had the experience of calling for a reservation and never hearing back. So, make the trip, wet your appetite for some lovely food in a romantic locale, but beware... you might end up eating somewhere else. Pros: Atmosphere, romantic, good wait staff Cons: Poorly managed, hard to get in, reservations more

A Gem 6/11/2004

The food is delicious and the setting is incredibly romantic. It's worth the trip up. Weekend brunch is always good, if you can get in, and the bloody mary's and mimosas are exceptional. Reservations are recommended. more

A find in Hudson Heights 3/17/2004

New Leaf Cafe is a great hidden find. The chef who came from Gramercy Tavern and 21 really knows how to put together great tasting, unique dishes with a twist. The homemade parpadelle with duck is excellent as are the diver scallops with seaweed salad. The wine list is nice as well. There is live Jazz on Thursday evenings. The building where the restaurant is located feels like a lodge in the mountains and is very airy and open and the setting in the Park makes it very cosy in the winter and refreshing in the summer. Pros: food, location more

uptown oasis 11/8/2003

New Leaf Cafe is a delightful uptown retreat. Beware of hour-plus waits without a reservation, but also consider sitting at the bar, where you can take casual refuge after a long week downtown (or anywhere below 190th street!) As a Washington Heights resident, this is one of my favorite spots to unwind with a friend. Best dish: wild mushroom risotto. Stay away from: appetizer ceviche - typical trendy attempt at Peruvian favorite - but the smallest portion I have ever seen - just 3 tiny slices! Pros: ambience, service, parking! Cons: slightly overpriced more

Suddenly, out of the fog... 6/21/2003

What a cool place! Nice people, good wine, easy menu with great food, and what a neat little stone building in the middle of a green park...you would never know you were in the big city. Pros: efficient staff, brief menu, stunning atmosphere Cons: expensive more

A NYC Find!!!! 5/7/2003

A real gem. For all those NYers who are on the eternal search for a cool new place to impress someone...its well worth the trip uptown on the A Train. It still remains virtually unknown. Combined with an afternoon in Fort Tryon Park and/or The Cloisters, dinner at the New Leaf is the cap to a truly unique NYC experience. Anyone can do downtown or the upper west side...boring. While the service is not excellent the staff is extremely friendly and charming (I'll take that over efficient service but snobby and arrogant staff). more

Get away without leaving Manhattan. 10/15/2002

The New Leaf is a pleasant change from the normal Manhattan dining experience. The place is very cute, stone, dark wood and paper sconces all set in a very beautiful park setting. The bar is very inviting and I understand they have live jazz every Thursday night. The indoor dining room is almost as nice, but I would steer clear of the outdoor dining ""patio"". Essentially just a tent over a shale/stone floor. The food is good (not great) but considering that the most expensive dish is $20 (NY Strip with Garlic Mashed Potatoes) - it makes it a little more pleasant. Salads are good and I would recommend the Lobster Cannelloni. Wine by the glass is reasonably priced and there's a good selection. Bottles are at the low to midrange and reasonable. All in all a great little getaway without really leaving Manhattan. Pros: Romantic, Rustic, Reasonable Cons: Really Need a Car more

The perfect escape! 7/7/2002

As a resident of Washington Heights, I have to say that this is the best thing uptown! After running by the restaurant one day and noticing the beautiful setting, I was convinced to come back for a quiet dinner. The charm of this semi-rustic / modern restaurant comes from its location in one of the best parks in the city. There are no cars that honk or crowds flanking by the window, allowing for a quiet and relaxed dining. The service isn't over-the-top, leaving you alone most of the time to enjoy the environment. Food was above average and well-presented, but nothing extraordinary. Vegetarians will have a hard time, especially if you don't eat dairy. Pros: Ambience, Good parking, Not Crowded Cons: Small menu, Lack of variety more
