Neds Books vs. Cal Student Store 3/29/2006

The only time you should really go to Neds is to buy or sell textbooks, and then only because you couldn't get them for cheaper at the student store. Their prices are pretty much the same, but it's the selection of used books that really count. Your best bet is to go to both; they're across the street from each other. If you're selling books back, hit them at the beginning and end of each semester, but don't expect much for them, especially if they're literary. Also, don't buy school supplies there, their selection is horrible. more

Textbooks 3/15/2006

Ned's is probably your only other option to the Student Store when you're looking for your text books. They are a bit cheaper than the Student Store, but it really bugs me how confusing it is in there. I've been going to school here for three years now and it's still tough for me to find my books, especially in the beginning of the semester. But since you don't really have much of a choice between these two monopolizing text book giants, you don't have much of a choice but to pick the lesser of the two evils... more

Books galore 11/30/2005

What can I say? They have the cheapest selection of textbooks, and it's a one stop shop for all university students. The way they catalog and organize their books is straightforward, and they are more than willing to look at their storage room to see if they still the books you want if they are out of stock on the shelf. more

Ned's Bookstore 9/28/2005

Freshmen are told to buy books locally as it saves them the trouble of finding it online which seems as a hassle to some. For those who find used book search online to be a hassle, Neds offers those a local store with all necessary books but comes with a much higher price. Compared to Half.com and other online textbook searches, my book cost for this semester totaled 220 dollars as compared to over 300 dollars it would have cost me at Neds. The lines for purchases and returns are extremely long during the first 2 weeks of school as students are adding and dropping classes. The buyback price for books is also a major drawback of Neds. Buying a new book for 100 dollars, would yield only near 50% of original value when sold back to Neds. Neds then promptly puts the used book back at the beginning of next semester at 80-90 dollars. more

Great alternitive to the ASUC bookstore 8/12/2005

Ned's is an independently owned bookstore across the street from the Cal campus, on Bancroft. I'd typically compare prices on books at multiple stores to see who had the better deal. While occasionally Ned's didn't carry a book for a certain class, they almost always did, and their prices were very competitive. Quite frequently their prices beat those at the ASUC (or A-Suck to many Cal students) book store. The staff was always very helpful. Whenever I had trouble locating a particular book, I was able to find someone who could help me. They were always quick and courteous. Some areas of the store are kind of cramped, so be prepared to have to squeeze around people blocking the aisles because they are staring blankly at the 20 books they're going to have to buy for just one class. Ned's also carries a selection of other supplies, like blue books, pens/pencils, study sheets, and more. Plus, they buy back your books at the end of the semester, and offer good prices for them. more

Ned's Bookstore 8/11/2005

The good thing about Ned’s bookstore is that not only do they have textbooks that are less expensive then buying them on campus, but they buy back books you are done with, which is great when you are looking for more money for school supplies. They don’t give you 100% back, but then who does? more

Cal Textbooks 8/10/2005

If you're a current or former Cal student, you've probably purchased your textbooks at Ned's before. Ned's is the go-to bookstore for most Cal Students. Among all the bookstores where you can purchase textbooks (ASUC, Campus, etc) Nedsoffers the best selection and the best prices for used textbooks. At the end of the semester, you can sell back your books to recoup some of your costs. My experience has been that Ned's will give you approximately 40% of what the full retail cost of book. So if the original book cost $100 and you purchased it used at Ned's for $70, you'll probably get back around $40. Of course, this all depends on several factors (ie. if a new edition is coming out, if the book is being used next semester). Ned's can get crowded at the beginning and end of each semester. Sell your books back early to get the best prices. more

Ned's 8/9/2005

Ned's is a book store right across from the UC Berkeley campus. Directly across is the campus student bookstore and Ned's is a competitor against that store. Many students choose Ned's over the bookstore because they have a wider range of used books and their books are usually sold at a cheaper price compared to the campus bookstore. At the beginning of school, Ned's gives away campus packs to customers as an extra incentive for students to buy their books there. The environment is very friendly but lines can get pretty long. more

I got used at Neds 8/6/2005

Are you a Berkeley student? Well, even if you are not, you can still stop by Neds. The books in here are for college students. You can buy used books or new books, whichever you prefer. If you go to Berkeley, you can find all of the books your professor assigns here. If you want a book that is in good condition, you may want to go book shopping earlier. Otherwise, you will be left with all of the worn out books. New books are of course expensive, but what school textbook isn't? more

Good alternative to ASUC Bookstore 8/5/2005

Opened while I was at Cal. Has pretty much all the textbooks that the UC Bookstore carries. Also has a good selection of college gear and clothing. I personally like the little knick knacks that they carry, like a meowing cat that I bought for my car, that I still have. Atmosphere is a lot more fun that your typical bookstore and they're doing well, as they expanded a few years ago. A mainstay on the Berkeley campus. more

Good alternative 7/11/2005

This is an good alternative bookstore to the ASUC bookstore. While the textbook prices here still ranges from exorbitant to astronomical, they actually sell some old books for half the price which they sell at the ASUC store. They also sell school supplies such as notebooks, pen and paper, eraser, pencil, college pads, calculators, pen-holder, bags, shoes. etc. But you are much better off buying them somewhere else because everything here, like everything else in Berkeley, is overpriced. more

better than the ASUC store 7/11/2005

Oh well, neds store is at least better than the ASUC store ran by the studetn union. The student union bookstore is suppose to give us cheap price and stuff but it never does, its a wierd thing that an independent store like Ned's actually gives us better prices. So compare prices before you actually purchase your textbooks as most freshman just automatically buy from the ASUC store which is not wise. Ned's also buys back books from people and then sell it as used books for 3 times the price they bought it from you. more
