Worst Service Ever 2/14/2010

This place is the worst sushi place ever. My husband and I walked in and the owner was NOT cool, He was rude and did not even say hello. When we asked for more wasabi and ginger, the owner seemed unwilling to give more to us. After we finished our food and were leaving, the owner did not say a word of good bye. It was like my husband and I were invisible like air.\r \r I now know why this place is so slow. The sushi is overpriced and incredibly small. On top of that, the service is horrible? No wonder no one goes there. Such a disappointment. more

Whoosh - and he lays up a brick - don't be fooled by the good reviews. 5/3/2007

I have been to Naka a few times and the experience is never consistent. I may not be from San Fran but LA has more than it's share of good sushi - Naka is NOT it (try Eki Eki in Torrance or for the higher end Sasabune in West LA or even just down the street Chez Melange). The chef/owner on my last visit was getting drunk with patrons/employees/friends and making less than appetizing sushi. A couple came into the restaurant and immediately left when they saw what was going on and Naka basically told them to leave while the drunk college aged patrons made rude remarks. Naka was too busy playing the ham to his drunk, fawning fan club to make decent sushi for the other waiting patrons. The wait to get served was far too long in between Naka drinking with his delusional fans - his wife/waitress was not too happy. We ended up telling them not to make our last roll because it was at least 30 minutes between the initial rolls appearing and his wife telling us we had another roll coming when we asked for the check. Basically Whoosh = expensive, uninviting, poor quality, and horrible service. Anyone who rates differently obviously doesn't know the first thing about sushi or even mediocre service. They must be the drunken regulars ? on a Tuesday night. Jobs anyone? Pros: Easy to seat yourself Cons: Drunken chef and frat club more

Not very good 10/9/2006

I am from SF, land of 100 innovative and simple sushi restaurants, so I know a little about sushi (not an expert though). The owner is SUPER cool. The owner is so cool I ""almost"" wanted to come back, but the sushi is that bad. My test rolls are the rainbow roll, and specialty rolls. For one, the prices are very expensive and the portions are very small. The very few sauces they use are heavy on the mayo. If you are going to use sauce, at least make it good sauce. The variety is very nill, which is okay if the value is decent, but it is not here. On top of all that the fish is very average for a sushi place. The same quality of fish you can expect from a nice grocer like bristol farms or whole foods. That isnt bad, but if all sushi restaurants had sushi like this, why would I even go to the restaurant!\r more

Did not care for this place 9/9/2005

This is a very bare-bones establishment, and they rely heavily on mayo in their rolls. I could hardly taste the fish. Would not recommend this place. Cons: ambiance, food quality more

WOOSH!!!! 8/16/2003

Great neighborhood sushi bar. Sushi Chef Naka is a blast. Albacore is incredible, spicy tuna is THE BEST. For an extra treat, order the Spicy Crab Sashimi. Don't forget to order Naka a drink, then WOOSH! Pros: Friendly, Good Parking, Fun more

Naka is it! 12/1/2002

Naka is the best Sushi Chef in the area and by far the nicest. He's willing to accommodate his regular clients and new faces and has even been known to make an occasional sushi taco! It's a great place for those who are looking for great sushi and a fun place to take your friends to. more
