Good food and good drinks!! more

I'd give it zero stars if I could... 2/10/2009

Whatever you do, do NOT go to this place to eat, drink, or be treated with any amount of common decency. I'm not even sure how it ever got a positive rating at all (unless it has changed hands in the past few years). The sad truth is that I've actually gone here a couple of times (b/c of the location, mostly) and every time it's been the same story - bad food, poor service, horrible management. I guess I just kept giving them the benefit of the doubt and expecting that things HAD to get better, somehow. But no. Tonight, a Tuesday b/t 6:30-7:30 p.m., myself and 5 friends decided to grab some drinks, some happy hour half-priced wings and some chips/dip. The margaritas were too sweet, the dip tasted like melted Velveeta, and we were charged full-price for the wings. When we asked the manager ("Ben") why this had happened, he said "Sorry, there's nothing we can do about that." We thought he was joking, but he just walked away. Seriously? It's amazing that this place is still open. If you are craving Mexican and/or a good margarita, go to Distrito (UCity, pricey) or El Vez (Center City, moderately priced), or even the Mexican Post (Old City, affordable)...basically go anywhere BUT Mad Mex. Pros: location Cons: everything else more

Disappointed and Still Hungry 1/12/2009

We visited Mad Mex with out of town family because they love Mexian food. My son, a toddler, was with us, so I checked on line to see if they had a kids' menu. Since the site said they did, we thought this would be a perfect place for us to visit. Once we sat down to order, I asked for the kids' menu and the server said they didn't have one. He got the manager, who said that even though I looked online, their branch didn't have a kids menu. Strike one. We figured out what to order my son and moved on. We all ordered our meals, and our server left. It took at least 40 minutes for us to get our food. Never once did our server come to assure us that the food was coming, even though he walked right past us. Strike two. When the food finally came out, it was terrible! Strike Three. I had the chicken tacos, which were burnt and had no flavor whatsoever. We were all eating spicy food, yet couldn't even get the waiter to stop at our table so we could get refils on our drinks. I finally stopped eating and decided that I'd eat something better at home. We left frustrated and disappointed. I will NOT return to this restaraunt , nor would I recommend it. The service and the food were definitely not what should be at a "4-star restaraunt", especially in the city. more

Bad food, run by terrible people 12/22/2008

I have never thought the food here was much good, and overall I think the only reason to go to Mad4Mex would be their cheap, strong margaritas. Nonetheless, I was put in charge of planning a work happy hour event, and many people wanted it to be at Mad4Mex. Fine. I called and had a long conversation with the manager about the fact that while the do not usually take reservations, in this case we had a large group who really wanted to have our even there, but the only way we could do that was to make a firm reservation. The manager says okay, we book the event. I even called a week before my event to make sure that everything was set, and was told that it was. SO, my group arrives at the time of the reservation and we are told that a large group of people had just arrived, and that they could not honor my reservation. Suddenly, I am left with a large group of people (30) who had been told to meet for an event at Mad 4 Mex, and there's no place at all for us to sit. I spoke with the manager who had arranged my reservation, and he now denied that he had ever 'guaranteed' our reservation. This is a lie, but regardless I simply cannot believe the complete lack of respect for your customers that it takes to simply decide to ignore a reservation for a group of thirty without even calling me. For what it's worth, we ended up frantically running next door to the White Dog Cafe, where they found a room for our group and gave us fantastic service and we had a brilliant time. Moral of this story: If what you want is a cheap, very alcoholic margarita and some faux-Mexican food, have a blast. If what you want is a place where you can take a group of people, or have any sort of reservation that you can count on, this is not the place. more

Horrible service!! 9/28/2008

This was one of my worse experience especially dining in PA for the first time... The waitress had such a horrible attitude. On top of that, we could hardly find her when we needed her... Whenever we want to order additional items, she would have this nasty look on her face... I would never come back again. Pros: None Cons: Horrible Customer Service more

Disgusting mexican food 3/29/2008

I ordered a Madmex enchilada with shrimps. What came out was shrimp sandwiched in two tortillas with some cheese on top, which is not even an enchilada. the rice was very dried and undercooked. Food is disgusting. Cons: Disgusting food that is expensive more

Come for the Margaritas not the Burritos 4/4/2007

Let's straight out and say it, this is NOT an authentic Mexican restaurant. Don't come here looking for an amazing burrito. This is however a favorite of Penn students' happy hour sport. Why you may ask? The answer is the the BIG AASS Margaritas. This giant size drink is enough to get you buzzed and stoned face. If not, then try another b/c they are that good. The wings are also fantastic. If you are in the area or want to find a place to go for happy hour, this is it. The only problem is that they get busied very quickly due to Penn students. Pros: the margaritas, wings, happy hour Cons: burritos more

One of the weakest Mexican chains in Philly 3/26/2007

I had heard a lot of good things about Mad Mex for a while and finally stopped in to check it out. I'm sad to say it did not live up to the hype, especially since I live in West Philly and we could use a good Mexican joint like this. As others have pointed out, the food is not authentic, but that's not always a bad thing. Take the Joint/Salsalitos for example, far from authentic but very good. Max Mex unfortunately doesn't have that sort of quality. The guacamole was very tasty but for the extra cost was sparse in serving. The serving sizes in general, for the prices, weren't up to snuff. You can get a bigger, cheaper, and equally satisfying burrito at Qdoba or Sante Fe, and I'm not crazy about either of those places. I imagine if you're looking to get drunk and eat mediocre faux Mexican, Mad Mex is for you. For a decent meal at a good price, look elsewhere. Pros: Food and drinks are decent Cons: Overpiced, hot and stuffy inside, service was okay at best more

intense margaritas 11/15/2006

You definitely cannot beat the margarita special (4-6pm then again 10pm-12am). Food is so-so, but it's hard to go wrong with the quesadillas. It's defintiely a college crowd, so if you cannot deal with that, I would not recommend going (at least not for the happy hour.) more

Margaritas 10/25/2006

I love the Mad Mex in Pittsburgh, and was excited to try the University City location. The space is much better in University City but the margaritas werent blended as well. Food was consistent with Pittsburgh (great queso dip). This is a great place for large groups, and you cant beat the happy hour specials. Pros: Specials, Good Appetizers Cons: Eh Service more

tasty but non-authentic food 9/10/2006

This place doesn't serve authentic Mexican food. However, the food is tasty nevertheless, and they offer something for everyone (from super-meaty tacos to tasty nacho platters to vegan cheese and sour cream in your burrito upon request). Atmosphere is relaxed and funky, and prices are reasonable. As someone else mentioned, ID checks can take forever, and I've also found that service is often slow. Pros: decent prices for the huge portions they provide, tasty food, good atmosphere Cons: not authentic, slow service more

snobby kids... 2/5/2005

This place serve one of the meanest wings (can get as spicy as you like it). Their burritos are very unique (thai curry burrito). It's definitly a great place to hangout on a fri/sat nite. Downside to this place is that you get the snobby Penn kids, and it takes the staff forever to check ID. more

Safe Mex Here. 11/6/2004

When we finally found this restaurant (look *behind* the Dunkin Donuts) on Penn's campus we realized that we walked by here many times and never knew this place even existed since it's off the street! Anyway, this mini-chain offers above average mexican cuisine in a nice non-chain like setting featuring leather clad menus, comfy booths, rustic iron sculptures and masks on the wall. Your entusiastic server will bring things like so-so chips, good salsa, and entrees including delicios, perfectly cooked steak and chicken fajitas, good quesadillas, and very good soft tacos. The soft tacos come with pretty good blue cornbread. The food is very fresh tasting and pleasantly not the least but greasy. Be sure to stop by during the week beteeen 2 and 4 PM or late nights between 11 and 1 as apparently all food is half price. All in all a pleasant find! more

BIGAZZ!!!!! 10/3/2002

I gotta say those bigazz margaritas are big!!! And if you get 'em when they're cheap it's a pretty good deal. There's a pretty good beer selection as well. Oh...and if you're not a big drinker, the food's not bad either, so tag along with the lushes!! more

Fun Mexican, great music 8/27/2002

Great music, tasty food, good value. Can't go wrong with Mex. Pros: Fun, Tasty more

not bad.. but not a 7 7/31/2002

I orignially gave this place a 7 for carrying Pacifico, but after giving Tequila's an 8, Mad4Mex is at BEST a 6. For grub it beats Chili's, but for *Mexican* food, go elsewhere. Mad4Mex is cool for a get-together place.. the margi's are good enough, and I haven't found many East Coast joints that carry Pacifico.. But it's nowhere near authentic - I actually think Casa Mexicana at Disneyland is more authentic than this place - but if that's not what you're looking for, it suffices.. The REAL reason I wrote this review in the first place is because Mad4Mex should IN NO WAY be ranked lower than the SORRY TACO HOUSE.. The food at Mad4Mex is at least edible.. Pros: Drinks, Decor, not that pricey Cons: inauthentic food more

Editorial

  • In Short
Customers won't find pink stucco or sombrero-wearing waitresses here since this Pennsylvania-based chain abandons South-of-the-border cliches for funky, Southwestern-flavored art deco. Dark and cavernous, these restaurants are generally illuminated by tabletop candles and a string of red, chili pepper lights; grimacing Aztec masks stare from walls decorated with cave paintings while metal sculptures dangle precariously overhead. Whether diners choose chicken, steak, shrimp or portabella mushroom, these giant wraps of Mexican rice, black beans, and Monterey Jack keep the lettuce, salsa, guacamole, and sour cream on the side.
