THIS WHOLE SCHOOL IS SUSPECT! AVIOD AT ALL COSTS! 9/27/2012

What a nightmare. Things were great until it was revealed I had a cavity. They then proceeded to fill the cavity which ended up causing me extreme pain about a month later. I went back and got a temporary filling which caused me extreme pain. 4 days later, went to the ER clinic and turns out the student had not completely removed the decay! Left with another temporary filling which turned my face in to rocky for 2 weeks. Went back and now I need a root canal and a crown because my gums are now infected after the ER clinic poked and prodded my gums with 3 needles. Apparently my insurance did not cover both procedures and they tried to hustle me in to getting a prepaid credit card with 14% APR!! The manager would not even talk to me until I signed the paper saying I would go through with the procedure. When I finally got the chance to speak to MS. ELKA EDWARDS she says "well what you want me to do, i ain't a dentist". I call patient advocacy and both ROSITA MARZAN & ALISON LEFFEL are sitting around waiting to "review" my complaint. Until then i'm stuck with a gum infection and a temporary filling that is coming to pieces. Unbelievably unprofessional. Make sure you got a lawyer before you walk through those doors. Get a cleaning and that's it. DO NOT LET THESE PEOPLE TOUCH YOUR MOUTH!! THIS IS HOW THE POOR GET TREATED IN THIS COUNTRY!!! more

good experience 1/24/2012

I have been a patient here(nyu) three years or more; since I have been here I had some extensive dental work done(from extractions of wisdom tooth/rebuilding of number of different teeth plus a number of other procedures). To now being a patient of the orthodontic department. As you can imagine, within a three year span, i have had a number of student doctors work on me. And you know what? I don't have any complaints, about any department(and i have received treatment from three , different departments/i have experience here). I have nothing, but praise for these young professionals(who are making a difference in people lives). I currently wear braces and I'm completely satisified with my doctor/her team(DR. H Park of orthodontic department). She is truly an amazing doctor. As she puts forth here best effort into each and every patient. Best orthodontist ever( I highly recommend)! Also, I would like to thank all student doctors, who i have been a patient of. For, working on my mouth(case) is no easy task but rather a learning experience(very difficult indeed). Thank you, once again DR Park,(your hard work is appreciated). more

THE WORST! 12/4/2011

Oh my god, do NOT go there. I was in HORRIBLE pain and went to their emergency weekend clinic. They misdiagnosed me and didn't believe me that I was in pain. Even though I told them that I was unable to sleep or do anything because of it, the doctor refused to prescribe me any pain meds because he stupidly believed I had something else than I actually had (which was later diagnosed at a different hospital). Not only are they incompetent, they also treat their patients like idiots. more

Implants, partials, flippers. 10/28/2011

I am in shock. I went for assistance because my tooth is falling out. I was open to having it extracted and putting either a partial or implant in. I was told that they would not do any work unless i took EIGHT of my ten upper teeth out. UNBELIEVABLE. As i was leaving because they refused to help me with the one tooth the student said "just go to the emergency room when you're ready." I happen to agree with their treatment plan but i cannot afford it and they would rather turn me away for the problem i went to see them for rather than help me. Their agenda is "all or nothing." I left very disappointed. I think this is disgraceful. I wonder how many dentists out there in the real world would turn down patients for the problem they are coming to the dentist for? How many practicing dentists would not work on your mouth at all unless you committed to fixing every single tooth in your head? NYU Dental Clinic certainly did not serve my needs. They ignored me completely and basically said get out if you don't have ten thousand dollars. more

Worst Day 10/14/2011

Awful. Unorganized. Total disregard. My visit to the dental clinic was a nightmare. After arriving for my appointment I waited for almost 2 hours. Only after going to the desk and dealing with the (very rude) receptionist was i seen. When i was seen for what was supposed to be my wisdom tooth extraction, I was told i hadn't been scheduled properly and would need to come back after another consultation. Why was i not told about this at my first visit 2 weeks prior to this visit? Or when i called to confirm my appointment? There was no explanation and I was made to feel like i had made the mistake. This visit was truly an example of our failing healthcare system, the patient's needs are no longer a priority. what's important are the hoops you must jump through just to get some help from a "professional" I will NEVER set foot in the NYU dental clinic again. If there was a way to rate 0 stars, I would. more

You get what you pay for 9/30/2011

I took advantage of their September 21 - 24 screening and free X-rays and cleaning. This is very generous of them to offer- so I thought. No dental insurance for years is what prompted me to do so. The place is quite dirty- a bit shocking for a dental facility. My third year dental student was scattered, no supervisor in sight. She was also not graded for the work. I made my intention for my visit very clear. I got the X-rays done by protest since she told me once I was already in the chair that I would need to return because they were out of film. She also tried to not give me the cleaning and make me come back for another appointment. I protested yet again and got the cleaning. Still have no idea what the set of 18 X-rays revealed. At the end of the visit she told me that these visits are two separate visits-- 3 -4 hours to do a cleaning and X-rays? If you include the screening- that's three appointments. Not worth it. I found my dental student to be very scattered-- and this is before I got testy about her repeated requests to have me return over and over for minimal care. Sorry NYU not for me. more

Go for cleaning and nothing else 8/9/2011

I wish I could give zero stars. This place is the worst. Not only did they misdiagnose a popcorn kernel under the gum as something requiring a root canal, the level of care is non existent. Oh and good luck trying to get your xrays. I have been calling NYU for weeks daily--no one in patient records will answer the phone. I've paid the copying fee in person to get my xrays, but they will not send them to me. I don't think the prices are good, either. You can find dentists in NY who give discounts. Go elsewhere. more

Implant Programs - NYU Dental 4/29/2011

The implant programs at NYU Dental is competitive with each program. I believe the programs are deceptive. NIH provided a generous grant and you sign $1025 for an implant. Yet, you can pay $3000 when completed. With a broken tooth and in pain I was Guaranteed a perfect candidate for an implant. Sent me home with the same broken tooth (I live in PA and in pain) which I pulled myself and then I had to make three separate visits to find out the work according to that specialist had to be done on another floor. Another specialist was out to lunch and provided service at his convenience. I finally walked out and hoped he enjoyed his vacation in NYC, as he supposedly had a practice in New Jersey. Lack of communication, professionalsm, and attitude towards patients. more

Back-up horrible 9/13/2010

Good: After both my dentures collapsed, a faculty member took pity. He and his group were great. I have tried to get in touch w/the clinic for some repairs, it is impossible to reach them. Every time I go there someone encourages me to spend huge sums of money. If I had the money, I wouldn't use them. Columbia is slightly more expensive. Their delivery system is excellent. They are a ranked school for a reason. I went to NYU for 25 year: same problems: the faculty support has deteriorated.. Bad: I had to sue to get them to repair my dentures. They get pushing back my work. I had no front teeth. Everything on a staff level happens too slowly.. Improvements: Better supervision. This should not be a social hour for the faculty.. Other: I call and the phone says: the message space is filled. Get someone to answer the phones. You are a service facility, and it is impossible to get through.. more

nyu college of dentistry in nyc 7/27/2010

Good: the courtesy and patience of the interns. Bad: being shuffle from one student to another; the lace of concern of what is best for the patient by the faculty member. On 2 occasion faculty thought it was best to extract 2 teeth than treating and restoring them; their reasoning it better than wasting time to treat the problem. My attending senior student had to fight for me, he ended up in the office with the (big guns) in the blue coats. He argued for me, the result; I got root canal and gum surgery above the tooth, He saved my tooth-Thanks Dr. Thomas. more

Horrible/Great 7/11/2010

Good: I was lucky to connect with a talented and professional faculty member and have stayed with her now for years. The students are nice, well-intended and seem to have good classroom training. The support staff is very professional. The facilities have been upgraded and that is a big improvement.. Bad: The faculty is terrible except for a few. With some exceptions, these are people who treat patients with extreme disrespect varying from hostility and contempt to condescension to disinterest. This includes deans and department heads. What a bunch of losers.. Improvements: Find better faculty and demand that they treat patients with respect.. more

Braces = Same Price 3/30/2010

I went to the NYU College of Dentistry in order to save money on my son's braces. An estimate that I got before going there was $5,000. I was hoping that I would be able to pay 1/2 price (considering that all work is performed by the students). The estimate that I received was $4,500 not including the cosmetic finish up (which was included in the treatment by the other doctor). It looks like it is absolutely NOT worth the money. 10% difference is really not significant at all. The doctors both students and faculty were extremely pleasant. If I were to rate them on the approach I would give them 5 *****. Unfortunately it is not worth it because of the insignificant $ difference. I wish all the very best to the students and faculty. Perhaps other services are more affordable. more

Never going back 8/19/2009

I am three months into a treatment plan and nothing, not one thing has been done yet. Opinions change, dentists change, appointments are broken. Total lack of professionalism and disclosure. If you go there, expect nothing and you will be ok. more

totally inept 8/13/2009

for any serious procedure. I went in on an emergency basis.Instead of fixing the fairly minor but quite painful problem they managed to break off a large part of the tooth while drilling. This has now escalated to my needing an implant (my only one)and I wouldn't consider going back. I agree with all the negative comments here. I always had great teeth and never had a bad dental experience till this one!! more

Socialized Medicine Works 5/28/2009

I think the students do a very good job considering they are thrown into all kinds of situations at once. My student dr. was very good and attentive and answered my questions. The faculty supervisor was also friendly and took the time to explain his diagnosis. Don't expect to get a private dental experience because that is not what this is but they get the job done at a fraction of the cost. more

I am appalled 5/20/2009

Good: Nothing. Bad: I was treated by a platoon of dentists each giving a different diagnosis and course of action. In the end I am down three teeth, $1,000, five out of the way trips, a broken filling due to a rough extraction, and a super loose tooth from the same. I walked out yesterday still with unhealthy teeth and the advice to save $50,000 for implants.. Improvements: The method of haphazard diagnosis and treatment at the expense of the patient needs to be eliminated. The professors seem to mouth of a course of action without real merit. There is no central person treating you and as your chart is shuffled from speciality to speciality you are given different information. My money is hard earned and while the costs are less than a private dentist it is not cheap at the clinic. There seems no regard for wasting your dollars on treatments with no long term benefits.. Other: I would like to speak to a faculty member/administrator to rectify my poor treatment. I cannot chew on my right side anymore due to loss of teeth (although the professor tells me I can - how she knows what goe son in my mouth astounds me). I should be reimbursed for the filling that cracked due to the residents incompetence. To go back to the clinic and have an undergraduate repair anything ranks below a root canal.. more

A good experience 4/27/2009

I need a lot of dental work done and wanted the best bang for my buck so I went to NYU. I ended up with a great student doctor - she was very thorough and has done better work any private practice I've been to. The work can take a while but for me it was definitely worth it. more

Slightly terrifying 4/23/2009

They told me I had two cavities I should get filled - supervising dentist agreed - but for some reason I had a bad gut feeling. I just got back from another dentist who informed me that I have no cavities. Just thankful that I decided to look for a second opinion. The whole process (simple cleaning, etc) took a long time, unfriendly doctor, and unusually painful. more

Better for Students than Patients 4/12/2009

Students learn at a good facility. Students/School isn't interested in what the patient wants but only to fulfill what they are interested in doing. If you give an opinion on what you want to do, or don't want to do or ask to have something redone that fell apart, you will be met with enormous resistance by students and staff and treated like you are being ridiculous. It's either their way or nothing. more

very pleased 4/12/2009

not bad at all if you don't mind the wait. the student doctor that is working on me is really good. great chair side matter; she will make a great dentist made the whole process worth it. thanks sandi.. more
