I have probably bought 95 percent of birthday presents for my friends at Mxyplyzyk, in the 10 years I've lived around the corner. No matter whom I'm shopping for, or whether I want something silly, something practical with good design (or a good smell - they carry personal-care products also) or something decorative and cool, it's almost guaranteed I'll find something there that pleases me - and the recipient. I've also bought many well-designed practical home items (wood boxes, bowls, coat-racks, vases, glassware, welcome-mats, soap dispensers, etc.) for myself there over the years, and my little apartment is a better place because of it! Also with many cool gift options for kids, greeting cards, fun coffee-table books, wrapping papers, kitchen stuff, even small furniture. One small warning: the staff are archetype snooty New Yorkers - they won't smile at you if you walk in and look them in the eye, smile and say good morning - and they wouldn't ask "can I help you find something" if their lives depended on it. But that can also be a good thing, if you're tired of mall-store obsequiousness. If asked to assist, they are pefectly helpful and polite, however. And they wrap gifts in a beautiful, unique way at no extra charge an no complaints.
