Worth the walk up Fifth Avenue 3/9/2006

There are two reasons to visit the Museum of the City of New York. 1. The building itself - imagine when 5th Avenue was just the country and rich folks had huge mansions (their "country estates") up here. The staircase is a great climb. 2. The exhibits - both New Yorkers and visitors to the city will gain a new perspective on what New York has been in the past (and what it represents in the present) through wonderfully curated exhibits (there is a lot more to New York than high society & 9-11 and the museum will show you). I have seen some of the best photography exhibits in Manhattan at this museum. more

The City in a nutshell 8/19/2005

This museum is housed in a masterpiece of a building on the northern end of the Museum Mile. It offers some great exhibitions on the history of the city of New York. The most notable for me was the exhibition on the history of the city's legendary relationship with the theater. The exhibition even tries to trace the origin of the MacBeth curse to riots on Broadway. Furthermore, the museum sometimes presents incredible photographic shows, which are by themselves a good enough reason to make the train journey uptown. more

Fabulous museum devoted to New York City 8/18/2005

This museum is located way up on the Upper East Side of Manhattan on a beautiful block by the park. You can take a lunch up to the park to enjoy and then head over for a few hours at this delightful museum. The museum rotates exhibits. When I was there, there was a faces of New York photography exhibit, showing photos over the past century of famous and not famous people in different phases of the city's history. There was also an exhibit of Broadway costumes that was amazing. The store is not to be missed with its wonderful selection of books, jewelry, scarves, postcards and other New York themed items that are tasteful for collectors, not cheesy souvenirs. more

Great NY History 8/16/2005

This is a great museum if you're interested in the history of life in New York. Even if you're not you might become interested. It's got great photos of old New York, even a exhibit on toys. It's not in the most central of locations (5th & 103rd) but it's easy to get to and it's only $7 to get in so it's cheap by NY standards. more

NYC - Past, present and future! 8/13/2005

A great little museum with an impressive marble floating staircase (there is nothing holding the staircase up on one side!). One of the most interesting dioramas is the one of South Street Seaport from when it was really a seaport - you can see how the ships' bows affected the architecture of the street and surrounding buildings in an active port. Several other model ships are on exhibit as well as toys from colonial times and various photographs and prints of our fair city. Rarely crowded - there are the occasional small classes of students who come through the museum. more
