Rat-atouille! 12/30/2010

We met some family for dinner and we were told there would be a wait, so we went upstairs to the Chinatown section of the restaurant for some drinks. The service was terrible, and we sat for about 45 minutes before our drinks showed. By the time we received our drinks, our pager had gone off for Musashino so we went downstairs for dinner. The sushi was pretty good, and the service at Musashino was a bit better. However, after our meal was over and the restaurant had cleared a bit towards the end of the night, a rat ran through the dinning area! more

Not many sushi places in austin comes close 10/13/2010

This is place is def. one of austins best. \r \r avacado kama is awesome, its their twist on most sushi places 'tower salads'.\r \r If you love all types of seafood, I highly recommend getting a sashimi deluxe. Great selection. Great Quality. All the sashimi has great color and texture. more

who wants to pay for bad service? 10/4/2010

musashino has to face that although their sushi is fresh and good, there are a lot of great sushi restaurants in austin now and they must step up their service - especially their waitress training. i went there with a friend i hadn't seen for awhile to catch up - we ordered a bottle of wine, two most expensive sets on the menu, appetizer, etc. our waitress had such a bad energy the entire time that my friend and i just could not have a good time. she never smiled, asked how we were doing, if we needed anything else. i mean who wants to pay for such a bad service? if i want to ignore the service and go for a take out just to remain a faithful customer, it still doesn't make sense since the whole point of sushi is to eat it fresh at the restaurant, so there is no point of me ever going back to musashino. good sushi but terrible service and awkward ambiance due to lack of staff training really ruined my experience there. i recommend other great fresh sushi restaurants in austin, pass musashino. you will leave feeling unappreciated and confused why you even tipped. more

Worst Service I had ever experience in Japanese Restuarant 6/8/2010

I was a super fans of Musashino.Especially their Ramen, it was great with authentic soup base. We have moved to CA and just came back for visit. We had been missing its ramen, I made a special lunch trip to Musashino today with friends. The ramen is no longer with Japanese BBQ pork. They replaced regular ""Honey braised ham"". The soup base was still pretty good. Friend of mine ordered a ""California roll"" and ""Caterpillar roll"". Both of them are $10; however, we realized their Caterpillar roll is not came with ""eel"" unless you specify ""add eel"" which is $3 more. There is no longer serving ""sashimi deluxe plate"" in lunch menu. Each order of Sashimi is $3-$5/pcs, minimum for each order is 5 pcs. The most disappointed was their service. There were 10 people in our party, our waitress was Mary. She had ever come and asked ""how was everything?"" not even came over for refilling our empty water glass. It was not too busy at the moment we were there. She was serving about 4 tables, she went there and asked all other tables, but just treated us invisibly!!! I almost had second thought not to pay that 18% gratuity! Although their ramen is unbeatable to anywhere, I would not pay any more visit there because of the service today by Mary. If you are looking for authentic Japanese food no matter of their service, you should pay a visit there. However, their prices are not worth for me to receive the un-welcomed service. Pros: Great Ramen with authentic soup base Cons: Worst Service more

Great Service Ask for Kay 4/6/2010

The best I've ever eaten! 12/14/2009

The Sushi and Sashimi at Musashino are quite simply the freshest and most succulent I have eaten anywhere in the world - including Japan, which is amazing to find in central Texas. Compared to other places in town it's by no means cheap, but good Sushi and Sashimi is worth paying a little more for. Try the Spicy Scallop or the Spider Roll - they are to die for and I save them till the end of the meal. Their Unagi is also the best! Go on a Tuesday because they're closed on Mondays and everything is really fresh on Tuesdays! more

This ex-californian was wowed 10/11/2009

I really enjoy going out to eat, and recently moved from Los Angeles where I had the opportunity to eat fantastic sushi all the time. I ate at many of the ""best"" sushi restaurants in LA regularly. Moving to Austin, one of my concerns was finding good seafood and sushi. I had been to Uchi, and sure, it was good. But it was not authentic, and their sashimi/sushi was OK. And then I went to Musashino. My wife and I got the ""omikase"" tasting menu- not a cheap option, but the option that allowed the sushi chef to really show us his stuff. And show us he did! I cannot express to you how awesome it was. As we devoured the perfect, well prepared sashimi and sushi, my wife and I kept giggling to ourselves and reminding ourselves that we were eating this in Texas! We both agreed that Musashino was the best sushi we had ever had. I proceeded to interrogate the server and chef on how they possibly could manage to get this quality of fish flown in to central Texas. We vowed to go back and to go back often. It is obvious why this place was packed on a tuesday: those who really know sushi, know this place is the best in town. Pros: unbelieveable, perfect sashimi and sushi Cons: if you want Uchi, go there instead more

Best sushi and nice decor 10/1/2009

I am going to Musashino at least once a month. I lived in Japan for 6 years and around San Francisco for 7 years. Sure there are a lot of good sushi restaurants in Japan but Musashino is still better than anything I've had before. Pros: Best sushi Cons: Long wait sometimes more

Great sushi!! 5/19/2009

Went here recently for the first time with my husband n found the place to be very quaint n private. I've never had sushi before and was pleasantly surprised that the waitress was so helpful in explaining to me the different fishes and how to eat it. Tried a stuffed avocado that was amazing.. And a fried icecream that was delicious. We'll definatly will be going back. It's a must try if you haven't been more

best in town 4/14/2009

you just cant beat mushashino for overall sushi experience. its authentic and delicious. the sushi pieces are cut a little thick for my small mouth but its always good.\r \r youre safe to order things like sea urchin and ankimo here, as well as a really mean roll called the texas style, i think. stay away from the southsider. yuck...to sweet and saucy.\r \r the desserts are worth skipping, sit in front of smokey at the sushi bar! Pros: classic style, fresh fish Cons: a little cold on the service side more

Bad manners 4/4/2009

My husband and I have eaten at this wonderful establishment more times than I can count. It is on our list as one of, if not the, best places for sushi in Austin. That being said, lately the service has really gone downhill. On our most recent visit a manager, whom I've never seen before (maybe he's new?) asked us to give up our table as we were finishing dinner and drinks with another couple. We had ordered two bottles of wine and spent quite a large amount of money on sushi. We were not trying to take a long time - we were simply finishing our drinks and using the restroom. I have never been so embarassed by a service person before. We were told there was a long wait and they needed our table. I have waited for tables at Musashino many times. Good food is worth waiting for - poor service is not. I'm not sure I would feel comfortable returning to eat with another couple. I felt like I was eating at a ""turn 'em and burn 'em"" rather than one of the best sushi spots in town. Truly disappointing. Pros: Great food Cons: Strange behavior from manager more

Not As Good As It Used to Be 3/17/2009

After being told 45 minutes for a table and waiting 1.5 hrs my group of 4 spent over $300 and were asked to leave our table 40 minutes after sitting so they could give it to someone else. We were about to leave, one person was in the restroom so they could have waited. Of course none of that mattered the next day because ALL 4 OF US WERE SICK. Had not been here in a while since the bad Food For Thought reports, should have not gone back. Good luck if you eat here, you'll need it. Pros: Good Selection Cons: Quality is Poor, Service is Poor and Overpriced more

good sushi, bad value 1/24/2009

heard it was the best in town so had to check it out. the sushi is good, but like many other reviewers, i found it to be very over-priced. we went early so didn't wait and service was good. Pros: good sushi Cons: over-priced more

Service with an Attitude 1/17/2009

The waitress was pretty snarky throughout the whole meal. She put the wrong meal down in front of the wrong person and just had an attitude about everything. But the crazy thing happened after we finished our meal. We asked for the check and when we paid we gave her $200 for a bill that was $135. She asked, 'do you want change?' Um... Of course we want change. So, she brought our change back but she didn't bring back the bill. We had to go find her and ask for the bill back, because after paying $135 seemed to be too expensive for what we ordered. When we got the bill back we saw that a gratuity had already been added. We only had five people, and I have never heard of a grauitity being added for less than 6 people. Plus, we felt like the reason they didn't bring back the check was because they were hoping we would pay the tip twice. It was very sketchy. I wouldn't recommend this place. more

not so fast... 10/18/2008

I ate here the other night with some out-of-town friends. After raving about it for some time, they were excited to finally have the opportunity to dig in. Well, lets just say I've had better sushi in the Dell dining room at work. The $5/piece of bluefin was brown (friends didn't even eat the other 3 pieces) the rolls crumbled (couldn't even pick them up) and the portion sizes seemed to have been cut in half. We were all very dissappointed, and I was embaressed with my choice of restaurants. \r Also, as a follow up to the austin hippie's comment, my visa card was over-charged by $33.42...not really sure why, guess I'll give them a call too. more

Absolute Favorite & Response to AustinHippie 8/17/2008

First I have to say that Musashino is my favorite Austin restaurant, and one I look forward to for months in between visits.\r \r To address AustinHippie's experience with the overcharge, there actually is an explanation. I work in a restaurant here in town, and this happens a lot. Sometimes when I credit card is rang up, there is reason to re-ring it (for whatever reason something was added to the bill, such as a forgotten drink, or the original copy was thrown away - this stuff happens) anyhow, when this happens the transaction will show up as ""pending"" in your statement until the final charge has gone through. When people come to me complaining of double or over charges, I tell them to wait a few days, and if it's no longer pending to call the manager of the restaurant. Almost every time, no one's trying to cheat you, it's just a computer thing, :) Pros: Delicious, great service, perfect ambiance. Cons: Can't make reservations. more

beware 8/14/2008

My wife are huge fans of Musashino...have been for many years. However, the last 3 times we've gone, our credit card has been over charged by anywhere from $18 to $56. Now I'm very familiar with the restaurant industry, and I know that occasionally a server will ""pad"" their tip, but the last time we ate there, I even mentioned the occurences to the waitress (one of our favorites), and it still happened. I questioned the owner and he simply replied ""I'll look into it"". Then a couple days later, the charges were corrected on my statements. There was no explination, or appology what -so-ever. So while I still highly recommend this long time Austin establishment, I must urge you to pay with cash or keep an eye on the transaction. more
