Hidden Treasure 12/24/2006

I eat out downtown all the time, and I have to say Mr. Z's is one of my favorite places to go! It is always cozy, the servers are so nice, the food is so good as well as reasonably priced. And it's right next to the theatre! Pros: nice servers, good food, very cozy, parking is pretty good, close to theatre more

It's the best... 7/18/2005

I was hooked after one visit. They're food is very good, well priced, and the service is awesome. They all know me by name, now. It's a good intimate atmosphere as well. You're never yelling to the person next to you. Definlately recommended! Pros: Inexpensive, Great food, Excellent service Cons: Hard parking at times more

Not good for groups 6/29/2005

We made the mistake of going to Mr. Z's with a large group. To be fair, when we called ahead we told them we'd have about 20 people, but when we arrived we had almost 30 people. However the service was so incredibly inept at handling a group, it's unlikely they could have handled 20 any better. It took almost 2 hours to have a normal lunch, and one person's food didn't arrive until we were walking out the door. The food was quite good but not worth putting up with the service. Hopefully they are fine with small parties. more

worth a second look 2/16/2003

I went to Mr.z's the first time about a6 months ago and I wasn't real impressed the service was mediocre and the food was just passing. This time was a whole new story GREAT service and the fussili russo melted in my mouth! I am glad I gave it another try apparently there is a new chef and several new servers they have definately taken it up a couple notches i was glad to see a art movie house next door as well kudos Mr.Z!! Pros: service, modest serving size, tiramisu Cons: crowded tables more

I liked it enough to go back 1/21/2003

The food we had was good. I liked the meatball sandwich, my date had soup, which she said was good. Our waiter was courteous, and conscientious of my European date's desire for no ice in her drink (without having to be told). We were in a hurry, made it known, and were in/out in less that 30 minutes. The lighting is pretty bland, which helps make a restaurant feel nice. Could use some improvements in ambiance. Tables were small and crowded together too much. Price was right, under $15 with tip. Overall, it was decent, but not outstanding. Pros: Inexpensive, good service, downtown location Cons: poor ambiance, crowded tables more

Worse than TV dinners 11/23/2002

We went to Mr. Zs after a movie expecting to have a great dinner. Sadly, it was the 2nd worst dinning experience weve ever had. We were chastised for deciding not to order wine. We didnt get water until after our order was taken. The server got my order completely wrong, and I didnt get my correct order until after my wife was almost done eating. The server asked if I wanted Parmesan cheese, which I said I didnt. But then he returned and dumped a whole spoon of cheese in my dinner. And the food was really bland. After we thoroughly salted our pastas, it tasted a little better, but still tasted worse than any airline food Ive ever had. I ate the salmon because it tasted like salmon, but the pasta was awful. We werent even compensated for our miserable experience. Well never go there again. Pros: Close to theater, Downtown Cons: Below average food, Below average service, A very bad experience more

Excellent Authentic Italian 11/22/2002

I really enjoyed Mr Z's. The owner was our server and was very prompt and friendly. I had the clam chowder which I must admit is better than what I make. The bread was delicious! I will definitely go back for the atmosphere and authentic food. It's definitely no Olive Garden - which automatically makes it great in my book. My only 'complaint' is that there is a somewhat limited vegetarian selection and wine selection (by the bottle is limited); otherwise, I definitely recommend it. Pros: Authentic, Quick, Convenient Cons: Limited Vegetarian, Parking more

cold vegetable sandwich 11/19/2002

If you feel like Italian, go to one of the other Italian places in town. Mr. Z's has poor service and the food is even worse. more

I gave it an 8! 10/22/2002

I went to Mr. Z's on a company outing and ordered the lasagna with meat sauce. Sadly I found the appetizers more tasty but the atmosphere and customer service made up for it. Patience among servers is getting rare- especially in the downtown area of Salt Lake. As far as the food goes, my co-workers all enjoyed their entrees so I will give it another shot sometime in the near future. more

A Great Place 10/8/2002

Mr Z's is a wonderful, calm restaurant downtown. I love the bruschetta and the tiramisu is pretty good. Maybe I just love Mr Z's so much because that is where I went on my first date with my boyfriend almost two years ago. Mr Z's makes a great date because you can eat dinner, then catch a flick. Close to Capitol Theatre too. Pros: great location Cons: downtown parking more

Country-style Italiano 8/28/2002

Came here after watching ""Amelie"" one evening and it was just the right exclamation point to a great, whimsical film. Again and again, I believe Mr. Z's strengths lie in the specials. I have had a variety of their ravioli specials and they never diappoint. Robust, flavorful sauces, and chewy subtle pasta shells... it's all good! Some of their main entrees come up a bit short (Pomodoro, Lasagne Bolognese, Conchiglie dish) on authentic taste but the one noteworthy-- Penne Con Salsiccia is a can't lose. Bread and salads are fresh, but the wine list is a bit bare. Opt for an Italian beer. Pros: great for movie nite, nice locale, Mr Z is a great host Cons: need better waiters, dessert menu sparse, need better wine list more
