Should have just bought a $130 of Sun In. 8/1/2011

It really bums me out to write a negative review. I was hoping to get my hair done here of my wedding in a few months. This experience is making me question that :( This was my second time at Mousey Brown. The first visit was great. Kristy gave me a great cut and style. But my second visit was a huge disappointment. I was having my hair lightened by way of baylayage, which is just a fancy french word for highlighting using a brush. She was fine with the technique but I should have just bought a $130 bottle of Sun In. Everything was okay till she rinsed out my hair. The she went to the color station and brought back some bleach. She ""lightened up my base"" without telling me in attempt to fix something she had done. She didn't say a word about having any problem with my hair. I gave her until my hair was dry to say something. I told her it looked orange. She took me outside. It was still very orange. She added some toner that didn't do much. I'm happy with the blondness of my actual highlights, but my orange base is unforgivable. I'm sorry Kristy. I love Mousey Brown but I'm going to have to go with someone else next time. more

Do not see Jen. 7/22/2010

Bottom line - I could have a done a better job bleaching and cutting my hair with a pair of horse hooves and a bottle of grape juice. Pros: ? Cons: RUINED hair, wore it in a scarf for 3 months. more

Great cut, great color, great service! 8/27/2009

I had a bad experience at the last salon and was nervous to try another. A friend recommended Mousey Brown and I've been twice now. I e-mailed Meredith for a consultation and she recommended Rita. Rita is down-to-earth, thoughtful, and understood what I wanted right away. When I got home, my boyfriend was all about my new style- he called me his 'new girlfriend'. This time I felt brave enough to get a some color done. I'm totally in love with the depth of color and the easy style. She made my hairstyle & color match my personality. I can't wait until my boyfriend sees me tonight! Pros: Quality, price, location, & friendly stylists more

Meredith is an alchemist of corrective color 4/23/2009

Meredith took my medium reddish-brown hair, with its layers and layers of dye in various shades of brown, red, and lame attempts at blonde, from several years of do-it-myself home coloring, and fixed it all up so that it is now a gorgeous shade of creamy, sandy, shiny blonde - the exact shade it was when I was a little girl. There are these super-shiny highlights just from the color she used! I didn't think it was possible. I had these persistent red highlights cropping up again and again, no matter what I did, and the thought of bleaching it out had always terrified me. But I finally got up the guts to do it, and Meredith was the only one I trusted with it. She's been cutting my hair for quite some time and she's always been very honest with me when it comes to what my hair will and won't do, and any maintenance involved in something. So I knew she'd advise me against this if it wasn't a good idea for me. Well, she did it. And I was surprised at how really well it all went... she got the color to come up beautifully in only 2 steps, and in just under 3 hours. I am THRILLED!! Pros: Real nice people, no snooty attitudes. Great atmosphere Cons: Nary a one that I can think of. more

knows how to tame my wild hair 3/30/2009

went to see jen last week... she has been cutting my hair for awhile now and always does a great job. i have super thick, unruly hair and i can always count on jen to tame the beast. she does a fabulous job thinning my hair out so it is manageable and always gives great blowouts! have had her do color a few times as well and am always pleased with the results. A+ Pros: left salon feeling like a super model with perfect hair more

Jen is amazing! 1/26/2009

I just got home from an appointment with Jen. I LOVE my hair. I gave her a tall order - I have a massive amount of hair, and I came in with a nasty color that I wanted her to correct. She spent the better part of 3 hours coloring and cutting my hair - giving me exactly what I asked for color wise, and a really cool cut. She is also really nice to talk to, so the time flew by. I've never had such a good time getting my hair cut, and really appreciate the time and attention she was able to give my crazy hair. I would highly recommend this salon and Jen. I've been ""salon hopping"" for years now, but have found a home at mousey brown (and just in time for my wedding, thank god. i was afraid i would look terrible, but now I know I won't - thanks jen!). Pros: nice people, cool atmosphere, great cut and color. Cons: none to report. happy camper. more

Love the color, love the cut! 1/2/2009

This was my first time going to Mousey Brown, and I had a great experience, Andrew took his time, and listened to everything I had to say. I wanted a brighter lighter blonde and he did a great job on my highlights. The last time I had them done, it was much too subtle, and I made sure to make it clear that I wanted to be a blonde, not just a lighter shade of light brown. I'm really pleased. I can't speak firsthand to the skill of the other stylists, but Andrew was great and I've heard that Rita is good too. Pros: Comfortable ambience, excellent results Cons: Not cheap, but I guess you get what you pay for more

DO NOT SEE JEN. 12/16/2008

i went to mousey brown to simply get my hair trimmed and shaped. i was greeted by jen, who proceeded to be the most unprofessional hair stylist i have ever been to. as a stylist, you need to meet the customer half-way, however, i spent the entire time instructing HER on how to cut my hair. she charged me half price after cutting my hair dry bc i think she could read my disapproval and her own complete INABILITY/DESIRE to make a customer happy. \r \r bottom line, it was the most UNPROFESSIONAL experience i've had. she cut my hair haphazardly, almost recklessly, at times, and now it is a complete mess. one side of my head is thinned, the other is a giant poof. while the salon is darling, and i assume their other stylists are far more capable, DO NOT SEE JEN, she will ruin your hair.\r \r \r Pros: decor Cons: JEN more

Doesn't anyone apprentice anymore? 9/28/2008

I have pretty high standards when it comes to hairdressers - my Mother was a Vidal Sassoon trained stylist in London in the 60s and 70s - so I was super-excited to read about Mousey Brown and went there based on the good reviews on this site, overlooking the bad ones. \r \r However, having tried out a couple of the stylists and having been there a number of times, I won't be going back. \r \r Both a friend and myself have left the salon with mediocre, and in one case atrocious, haircuts. We are both very clear about what we do and do not want, even bringing in photos to help the stylist get on the same page. But it seems that unless you're looking for current, 80s, Williamsburg trends, you'll be unhappy. The stylists seem to be obsessed with jagged bangs and pixie-styled mens cuts. We both have pretty great and easy hair to work with so for either of us to have left looking the way we did, it is too bad. \r \r I wonder if the lack in apprenticing with real artists is to blame for this. All the stylists I spoke with told me that their training was from short beauty school courses and years of ""on-the-job"" experience. Which may be why the price is so good - yet, perhaps it's an overall commentary on the industry in general these days.\r \r Sorry Mousey Brown, I really, REALLY tried to give this salon a chance - I'm desperate for a good NYC hairdresser! more

Awesome! 9/20/2008

I highly recommend Mousey Brown!! My experience at the salon yesterday was great. I just had my first day off in two weeks, just got over a really bad cold, was feeling pretty low, and was looking forward to a haircut. Friends had told me about Mousey Brown and I'd read great reviews but never got around to going. I've been looking for a salon and a stylist that I would like to keep going to but it's been so disappointing, my last haircut was super expensive and the color was not good at all, my hair was two different colors! I was a little nervous about getting my hair colored again but Lacy, at Mousey Brown made it look beautiful, she was able to get my hair back to its original color and gave me a great haircut. I'm excited about this salon, it's close to my house and the prices are more than reasonable, especially for the awesome work she did with my cut and color. Lacy is awesome and is very nice, and I look forward to going back. Pros: nice people and great work Cons: it's out of the way for people who live in the city or in another borough but worth the trek! more

Mousey Brown 9/16/2008

My stylist was very nice but gave me possibly the worst haircut of my life. She cut my bangs in one chop while I was looking down, which goes without saying left them INCREDIBLY short. She also single-processed my hair, which is curly at the roots and so stands a bit off of my head - it looked like I was wearing a hacked wig. When I expresssed to her how unhappy I was with the wig-look of my cut/color she admitted the bangs were shorter ""than she expected"" and after a very long stressful discussion said she would put in some lowlights - in a couple of days. I work in an office and this was unacceptable to me. The next day (Sunday) they called and said they would fit me in - she barely changed the color and had to thin down and chop into my already thin hair so it wouldn't look so fake. Like I say she was very nice - but I looked like a wreck for weeks after. more

Great Cut and Color for a Reasonable Price 8/28/2008

I tend to wait too long in between cut and color so the hairdressers usually have to work. Andrew was up for the challenge. During the consultation he was honest about prices and gave me options so there was no shock at checkout time. I have a deceiving amount of hair so most hairdressers rush the cut. Not so with Andrew. He is extremely detail oriented. My long hair was thinned and layered in an innovative way that I haven't experienced at the hands of pricier stylists. The client he saw prior to me walked out with a head-turning bob which leads me to believe his talent with the scissors covers the hair spectrum. Best highlights and cut I've had in Brooklyn for the lowest price. more

double-booked 8/25/2008

I made an appointment, checked in, and waited for a half and hour. Finally, I decided to see what was taking so long. It turns out the stylist I had an appointment with didn't know I was waiting on her and was with another client. They were all very confused and unapologetic. I walked down the street to Woodley and Bunny, as a walk-in - stellar service and a great haircut! more

Great Cut 8/20/2008

I was nervous about trying out a new hairdresser because I've been getting my hair done by the same woman in Jersey since I was 10. But after moving to BK, I didn't want to make the trek anymore. Last night, I had an appointment with Rita and she was awesome. We talked about what I wanted, she listened, I brought in a picture of the style I wanted, and she delivered. I had a great experience, the people were very nice, and I'll be going back for my next cut... Pros: service Cons: n/a more

Second Thought 8/14/2008

I went to Mousey Brown's last week and was not happy with my cut - it was much shorter than I wanted. However, when the owner found out how unhappy I was, she made a point of contacting me to see if there was anything they could do to make the situation better. There wasn't (my hair is now too short to really do anything with), but it's only fair that I point out how accomodating they are at this salon and that they go out of their way to make their customers, even the disgruntled, cranky ones, happy. Pros: nice people, nice atmosphere, very accomodating more

Mousey Brown 8/13/2008

Nice people. Cool place. Horrible stylist. I went in for a trim and the girl butchered my hair. I guess you get what you pay for. My hair looks disgusting thanks to her. I hate it and I don't recommend this salon.\r \r Pros: price Cons: talentless stylists more

LOVED my haircut!! 7/15/2008

Had a great experience at Mousey Browns: 1) The receptionist got me in same day on a Sunday and was very polite. 2) the stylist that cut my hair LISTENED to me, wow! 3) convenient location, cool music, nice people - all around awesome. 4) had a great cut. Best in 3 years. I even took a picture because it is how I want to look.\r \r The only downside was the pricing system. I am a guy and often I feel OK paying $30 or $40 for a cut. But at Mousey they mixed me in with the ladies and I had to pay their price - $55. I love equality, but that seems steep for a guys wash and cut. \r \r I loved my cut, but I am torn whether I will be back there anytime soon. I know mgmt reads these posts...hello. I would be there 12x a year if you just have a dude's rate. Do the math, at $40, that means more revenue for you! Pros: Best haircut I have had in at least 3 years. Cons: No guy's wash & cut price. Ouch! more

Awesome cut and color! 6/11/2008

I went to Lacey for the first time in April for a cut and color and it still looks great! I thought the color she did was awesome, not chunky, and very well blended. I have blonde hair and like it to look natural with highlights, which is exactly what she did. My cut was amazing!!! I tried, very vaguely, to describe what I wanted and she did exactly that and more--even with my poor explanation. It is very rare for me to have a short hair cut that grows out well and it's been almost 3 months since my cut and it still looks great! I'm going to see Lacey again in 2 weeks. She's awesome and I saw some other cuts/colors by other stylists while I was there that also looked great. From someone who's REALLY picky, I would highly recommend this salon. Pros: Great cut and color Cons: Color is a bit pricey for me, but I guess normal for NYC more

Really, just ok 5/19/2008

I REALLY wanted to like this place, as I've been traveling for years to my old salon in jersey, and wanted to find a place i like close to home. I've been here twice, first got a cut with Lacey. It was a bit choppy and looked just ok. I came back to try her for highlights, since she got such great reviews. Again, just ok. The highlights are much too chunky, I specifically asked for them not to be; to be more subtle and just blend. Plus, she got closer to my head with some highlights, and not other. So some of the streaks have about a 1inch dark root! I was surprised, especially based on other reviews here. The staff here are nice though. Pros: location, friendly Cons: uneven cut and color, left with dark roots :( more

Nice people, OK salon 4/26/2008

I've been to Mousey Brown twice to get an all over color and hair cut. I went to a stylist that is no longer there and he gave me an amazing hair cut which I still love. However, the only con was that he didn't color my hair evenly. Both times I went to him I left the salon with uneven hair color which was noticable to my boyfriend (and he has no attention to detail). I think the uneven application had to do with the lighting because the salon is kinda dark. Recently I've been to a new salon and the colorist said my hair color was neglected in certain sections and he missed big chunks of my hair. I was very disappointed to hear this as I really liked Mousey Brown. While my experience there was OK, I'm glad I followed my instinct and tried a new salon. Pros: nice staff, fair prices, great hair cuts Cons: uneven hair color more
