Shop here and you'll get sick! 1/9/2011

I asked the young deli person, was the Morton Williams house brand Turkey breast as good as the more expensive Boars Head brand? He told me, it was very good. I ordered the house brand. Shortly after, I ate some of the Turkey. Upon examination, the Turkey was slimy, shiny, pinkish in color, and very salty. It seemed to me to be spoiled Turkey. I returned to the store. I showed the Turkey to the deli manager, Mr. Joe White. He told me that I bought the cheaper brand. The deli manager took offense, when I expressed to him that; I was surprised that Morton Williams would sell such an inferior product. He shouted at me that he was offended at my comment, and continued shouting, that I had bought the cheaper Turkey. His provocation surprised me, and I felt it was inappropriate. I went to the assistant manager and told him what happened. He looked at the Turkey and agreed that the Turkey was slimy. He took me back to the deli manager. The deli manager complained to the assistant manager, that I bought the cheaper brand, and he was annoyed that I expressed to him, that I was surprised that Morton Williams would sell such an inferior product. He provoked me into a shouting match with him. The deli manager told me, “If I were not so old, he would come over there and kick my ass.” The encounter was a shouting match, but I never threatened him with physical violence as he did me. The assistant manager took me aside and offered to give me my money back. I told him that, “It was not about the Turkey or getting my money back, anymore. Later that day I received a call from one of the Morton Williams owners, Mr. Steven Sloan. I explained to him what happened. He agreed that the deli manager acted inappropriately. He told me that he examined the Turkey brand sold to me, and agreed that it was slimy and not a real Turkey Breast, but a Turkey composite. Mr. Sloan further told me, that the deli manager on his own accord bought this inferior product, without the company’s knowledge. I do not understand why an employee of this firm would go against company policy and purchase an inferior brand of Turkey Breast, and then sell it to me, as another quality product. That is deceptive. Mr. Joe White got into a conflict knowing that he was selling and defending an inferior spoiled product. His actions are incomprehensible, and downright dishonest. I have not been sick in years, but approximately a day after eating that Turkey, I was down with a stomach virus, which lasted for 2 days. more

Continued, Morton Williams is the MOST DISGUSTING market. 11/7/2010

HERE IS MY FIRST EMAIL THAT YOU NEVER ANSWERED. Dear Morton Williams, I have been wanting to write to Morton Williams for about two years now. I have now reached my absolute limit with my local store that I can't put it off any longer. I live right next door to the Morton Williams at 278 Park Ave. S. (b/w 22nd & Park Ave. S.) I am DISGUSTED with this store. 1. I am DISGUSTED with the people who work there. Disgusted with the managers who eat McDonalds at the closed register while customers are lined up around the aisle. Disgusted at the check out women who literally do not say one word to you when you are checking out. No, ‘hello’. No, ‘thank you’. Nothing. And disgusted at the cat calls that come from the men who work there when they are loading product outside the store. There is absolutely no leadership at this store and no sense of customer service. 2. I am DISGUSTED with the food at this store. There are constantly flies around the produce and the produce is rarely fresh. Las year the freezer in the store broke down. I discovered this by picking up a pint of ice cream only to have it overflow because it had been melted for so long. I had to point out to a manager that the freezer was broken. He seemed less than concerned. If that wasn’t bad enough, the next day the SAME ice cream was still in this freezer. They repaired the freezer but did not through away all of the dairy that had melted. You could tell by the condition of the ice cream that this was the case. I am shocked that my family and I have not gotten sick from shopping at this store. I try to go to this store as little as possible. I much rather pay the delivery fee for Fresh Direct or trek the extra 5 blocks to Whole Foods, but sometimes I have no choice on my way home from work. After the last time I was there I vow to never shop at this store again. It is purely a HORRIBLE experience EVERY single time I walk in. Just look at the comments on this page as well as Yelp. I am clearly not the only person who feels this way. Comments that stand out: “Beyond disgusting is what I called this chain of supermarkets....take a peek at the hand carriers and how filthy they are....the meats are kept out for weeks on end. Sometimes I go in there to buy chicken that has a date two weeks ahead on it.I don't know how they stay in business. The staff is rude.“ “But you know what? I should have known better, because a couple of months before that, I'd been shopping for cream cheese, again in the prepared foods section, and saw that a whole stack of containers had big green splotches of mold on them. I took them to the guy behind the deli counter... who was cleaning his nails... and gave them to him, explaining about the mold. He seemed barely concerned and told me that the bottom container in the stack didn't look like it had mold on it and did I want that one? Um... no, stupid.” Please do something about this store. Neighborhood grocery stores in New York should be our pride. They are what feeds us and should be a place a neighborhood is proud of. I cannot say that about this store. It is a health hazard and and extremely unpleasant place to shop. I hope you actually read this letter as well as the comments in the links from Yelp and CitySearch and do something about this disgusting store. more

The MOST DISGUSTING suppermarket in NYC. 11/7/2010

Hi Morton Williams!!! This is the second email I have sent to you. In my last email I swore to never enter your Park Ave. S. store, EVER, EVER again, and I haven't yet, my husband was forced to tonight. I know that is the only business you can really count on. The people FORCED to go into your store because they are in a bind. ANYWAY, I digress. So, my husband went into your store, and what did he find? A manager and two store employees eating McDonalds at on of the closed cash registers. Is this acceptable to you? Because it's not acceptable to us. In fact it is down right unprofessional and unsanitary if you ask me. But hey, I have emailed you once before with these concerns and included my email address and you have yet to write back to me, so I guess this type of behavior is acceptable to you. I will be posting this on Yelp and CitySearch. Have a great day!! Miranda Dean PS: The next time I get cat called by one of your employees INSIDE the store, I will be pressing charges. Maybe you'll answers these concerns then. No? more

Grossly dirty hand carts and food with extremely long shelf lives printed on them 11/30/2008

Beyond disgusting is what I called this chain of supermarkets....take a peek at the hand carriers and how filthy they are....the meats are kept out for weeks on end. Sometimes I go in there to buy chicken that has a date two weeks ahead on it.\r I don't know how they stay in business. The staff is rude. The guy behind the meat counter on 9 th avenue was slicing me 1/2 pound of brisket. He proceeded to package it up and I saw him throw the remainder of it out. I decided to open up the sealed package he gave me only to find 1/3 of it was edible and the remainder was fat. That describes the moral or care I suppose. When you work in filthy disgusting surroundings you become filthy. more

Rude staff, beware of stale items on shelves 5/14/2007

I've visited the Morton Williams at 22nd & Park Ave. twice, and surprisingly both unpleasant. The staff is very cold at checkout like its a favor they are doing! Moreover, the cake I bought turned out to have fungus even though the date printed was the next day. Very embarrassing for the party I took it to! Also, definitely more expensive than Trader Joe's! Pros: Open 24 hours Cons: Expensive, poor service, stale items more
