review of montas 8/1/2006

I love going to Montas, its the first dance hall that I've been to where there is more dancing on the floor than socializing. The door men are always nice and friendly, and the bartender there is very nice too. The atmosphere is pure Latin, which I love and Ladies the men there OH MY GOODNESS! The music is a total mixture of new and old salsa. Its a great place to meet and mingle with new people. Dance lessons are always tought by the cutest little guy, who loves to please the ladies and he always ads that extra step to make you look cool. Lessons are on Fridays @ 9:00pm, which leads into a great time afterwords. I also think that safety there is a top priority too. more

if you like to have a good time... 3/18/2006

Montas is a great place to go on the weekends, I found it about a year ago, and have really enjoyed my time spent there. The owners are very nice and welcoming and if you give it a chance you will really warm up to the regulars. There is a mix of Salsa, Merengue, Bachata and Reggaeton on the weekends and plenty of dancing. I love that the crowd is very diverse, people from all over Latin America gather here. This is worth a try or two, and despite what others said, I suggest you give it a chance if you are a salsa or merengue enthusiast. And, the bar is no more overpriced than any bar in the triangle. Pros: diverse, good management, excellent music Cons: limited seating at ti more

HARDLY Worth the Drive... 2/16/2006

The Pros - One of the only 'salsa' clubs in the triangle. The Cons - The dress code is extremely inconsistent and is largely dictated by the crowd (or lack thereof.) - It is hardly a salsa club anymore than a high school class. I find people that attend Monta's Lounge nowdays are cliquish and snobbish, often comparing looks and clothes - and hardly dance with people outside their group. - More and more 'reggaeton' and regular club music is being played - if you are looking for a real salsa club you might as well stay home. - Poor treatment of customers is one thing being BELLIGERENT and CONDESCENDING is another. J LOST MY TICKET TO THE COAT CHECK & THEY REFUSED TO RETURN MY JACKET, even though I could name the brand and the contents in my left pocket (ear plugs.) - more

Hardly a 7.0 12/29/2005

I started attending Monta's five years ago, when it was literally a dance club (not a bar or a place to pick someone up.) In the last two years I have noticed that it has become very clickish and pretentious. If you care to dance, I suggest bring a date. The dress code is often altered depending on how busy things are. I would hardly recommend this place nowdays. Pros: music, typically older crowd Cons: dress code changes, Bad parking more

thursday nights. WOW!!! 3/13/2004

This was a great place on Thursday night! totally different crowd/atmosphere than the weekends. they had $1 domestic bottles, $2 import bottles, and various $5 shooter specials. the interior is mediocre, but the dj was of the hook, and there were plenty of well dressed, good looking ladies. I live closer to Raleigh, but this is definitely going to be my new spot on Thursday nights. I will come better dressed the next time. Pros: Free entry before 11p, great music, drink specials Cons: , location, not well known, yet more

Editorial
  • In Short
More like a community dance parlor than a lounge, Montas merely hints at Miami style. The club, which is hidden in an obscure strip mall in RTP, looks like an old pool hall converted for dancing with its mirrors, dim lights and streaming dance-lesson videos. Cheesiness aside, it does provide a spacious dance floor and good Latin dance rhythms. It's a good place for women to dance--and be asked to dance--without being hassled.
