It was like being in Belgium 4/15/2007

I don't have a place near my home in Ct where I can get an order of genuine Belgian Frites and a Leffe. I enjoyed both of them with my overflowing pot of mussels. It was a little piece of Brussels in Center City. We arrived a little before lunch time on a Friday and had wait at all. I loved it and will return again. more

I live right around the corner from this place. 3/23/2007

Over-rated. It's dirty and noisy and cramped. The food is just ok. In other words: What is all of the fuss? And I like my beer fresh. When I'm in Europe I'll drink Belgian beer. Why drink imported beer that's been sitting on a container ship for god knows how long and in god knows what temperatures? Flat skunky beer versus a fresh Bud or a Rolling Rock (which is now Bud, anyway) is a no-brainer. Stop taking beer so seriously. It's just beer. It's not froie gras. more

Fabulous Beer Selection 2/21/2006

Monks is a very cute little restaurant located in Center City Philadelphia--they serve very tasty food, but the main attraction is the phenomenal beer list. They are a self described "Belgian Beer Emporium." They have an unparalleled number of beers on their menu--both on tap and in bottles--from all over the world. Their food is also very good--particularly their burgers. Check out their site at: http://www.monkscafe.com/ more

MMmmm beer! 12/10/2005

This is a beer lovers dream! The atmosphere and beer selection are amazing! You will not be disappointed in your experience here, make sure to ask the server what kind of beer they reccomend depending on your specific tastes, they will glady offer their advice and expertise! It doesn't just stop at great beer, the food is very good here as well - Try the mussels and don't forget to try the fries, yum! It is a little pricey and tends to get very busy on the weekends (like everywhere else) so be prepared to wait a little! more

Best Mussels, Beer, and Fries in Philly! 10/19/2005

Unknown to most out-of-towners, Monks Café has an incredible selection of beer and mussels. It is the kind of place to go if you know Philly well. Away from the bright lights of Walnut Street, this little restaurant draws a crowd early on in the day. The mussels are fresh and cooked in all so many ways. The fries that accompany the mussels are not to be reckoned with either. They are finely sliced and seasoned. The beer selection changes regularly, but the favorite remain onsite year out. The only drawback to Monks Café is the long wait. However, it is well worth it. more

Great burgers, horrible non-beer drinks. Wait is long 9/13/2005

Monks have the best burgers and fries. But their non-beer drinks are horrible. Then again, Monks is known for their beer, so I should not complaln. There is always a wait at Monk's... esp on the weekends. Make sure you arrive with your entire party.. otherwise you will not be seated. more

Best Belgian Beer in PA 8/21/2005

After looking high and low for a place with good Belgian beer on-tap, I came across Monk's Cafe in the heart of Philadelphia. I believe Monk's has the largest selection of imported beer in the country. The beer menu alone takes a half hour to read. But after standing in line for 45 minutes to get into the place you'll have a pretty good idea of what to get. The food was decent. Mostly pub food but they had a few things for vegetarians. A must visit for beer connoisseurs. more

Beer Mussels 8/20/2005

Monk's, the home of beer, mussels, and killer fries. Think of a beer, Monk's has it. Their selection is second to none and the food compliments it perfectly, with their wide selection. Make sure to pick up a beer bible while you are there. It explains all different types of beers and also lists Monk's complete bottle selection. This bar/restaraunt looks small from the outside, but has multiple rooms for seating and bar space. more

Belgian Ales and Addictive Fries 8/17/2005

Monk's, the tiny Belgian bar located across the street from La Viola, has possibly the best beer selection in Philadelphia especially (and obviously) the Belgian beers. The beers on tap selection at any time is small - maybe 5 beers - but many many more are available by the bottle. The food is typical pub fare but very tasty - in particular the french fries with bourbon mayonnaise are so addictive you will swear there are illegal substances in the dipping sauce and the mussels, most in some sort of beer, are incredible. The burgers are also pretty tasty but not necessarily different from what you might find anywhere else. The place is however very small so it can get really crowded and does not take reservations as far as I know so forget going with a large group - even in the bar area getting a seat involves luck and a prayer. But the fries, mussels, and beer are worth it. more

A great place for belgium beer and food 8/15/2005

Monk's Cafe is an awesome bar/restaurant that offers a variety of belgium beers (too much to sample in one sitting). Monk's generally leaves a two-sided menu of beers you can choose from, but you can also ask for their beer guide. And if you're still confused, just ask the staff (just keep in mind what type of beer you prefer -- light, dark, wheat, hoppy, etc). They also have a good menu if you're hungry. I would recommend their fries, burgers, and mussels. Overall, the dark atmosphere and great beer selection gives this quaint cafe an interesting, european ambience. more

Cafe with a great selection of Belgian beer n food 8/14/2005

Few minutes away from Liberty Place is a Belgian Bar that has a big selection of Beer and good Belgian food. I have visited Belgium plenty of times when I used to live in Europe. Belgium is famous for their beer and good mussels/seafood. In Philadelphia, you can go to Monks Cafe to get a taste of what Belgium has to offer. The food menu is very diverse and there's something for everyone. If you are a spicy lover try their wings with the tongue burning sauce. Also try Belgian fries with the mayonnaise based sauce, it's very Dutch/Belgian to eat french fries with mayonnaise. The beer menu is very extensive and a must try is the Hoegaarden, and Lambik, which is a fruity flavored beer. more

Beer and Mussels 8/9/2005

Monk's serves one of the most extensive Belgium beer selections in the city (they even have a "Beer Bible" for your browsing). This is one of my favorite places to grab a bite. Their frites are amazing (it's all in the dipping sauce), as are their burgers, and of course, mussels, cooked in different beers/ales....I'm salivating as I write! Definitely a must for any food enthusiast! more
